How Do You Feel About Scented Shampoos…for Your Pet?

July 13th, 2018 by Karen 20 Comments

Why yes, fancy fragrant pet shampoo IS a thing.

Note: This cat looks like how I feel when I wake up in the morning. #accurate

Yes, scented pet shampoos are totally a thing. Human hair care company OUAI recently launched a musky floral $28 Pet Shampoo (“a spa day for your pet”) with notes with Italian lemon, Turkish rose, jasmine, iris, lily and white musk.

But ooh-la-la, it gets fancier! It also contains sensational-sounding luxe ingredients like…

  • Apple cider vinegar — For its natural antibacterial properties, and because it helps to balance pH-levels.
  • Aloe leaf juice — Soothes dry, itchy skin.
  • Tamarind seed extract — The natural equivalent of hyaluronic acid, because it promotes hydration while providing a velvety moisture barrier to keep pet hair hydrated.

— OUAI PR

Um…do I really need to tell you that I kinda want to use it on myself?! Ha ha ha!

I love a floral white musk as much as the next crazy cat lady, but I probably wouldn’t use this on Tabs, EVEN IF he let me give him a bath, which only happens once in a blue moon, because I like his au naturel kitty fur smell, which smells a little like me, a little like El Hub, and a lot like a steamed pork bun (weird, I know…but it’s comforting!). Sometimes it also exhibits notes of Burt’s Bees Baby Lotion.

A girl and her tabby best friend

Hmm… I’m not sure how Tabs would feel about fragrant shampoo; however, I do know how he feels about baths (he’s not a fan). I suspect that he wouldn’t want to put anything on his fur that could potentially overwhelm his million-dollar sense of smell, you know? Because what if he accidentally slipped out of his couture cat collar/harness one morning and had to fend for himself and live off the land, but he couldn’t smell an approaching cat criminal because his kitty nose was overwhelmed by notes of Turkish rose?

I know, I’m freakin’ crazy…

Anyway, how do you feel about fragrant shampoo for pets? Inquiring minds want to know.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. I can’t believe I’m about to say it again already, but TGIF!!!!!! 🙂

I think they’d be good for dogs who need/like baths but definitely not for the kitties! They do a good job bathing themselves! My cat’s fur smells best when we come in from a supervised outside adventure!

That’s the best scent. Ohh, or how about when they’re inside napping in the sun for a while? I swear Tabs’s fur smells like sunshine. 🙂

      Happy Friday, by the way!

Never on a cat or a dog. They have beyond amazing ability to smell. I think it would be sensory overload. It is a shampoo created for humans not pets. I would discourage anyone from purchasing such a product.

It’s kind of amazing how finely tuned their sense of smell is! I swear Tabs knows when another cat has given me kitty hugs around my ankles, or when I’ve been petting dogs. He gets crabby about it too!

I use lavender ‘dry shampoo ‘ on the bouncy hound now to freshen him up after an adventure. It’s supposed to be calming, ha! I like it though which is good since he likes to be in contact with me at all times. ?

I totally believe that lavender is calming! I had a dog once who could’ve probably used a double dose of that dry shampoo not just for the scent (he had the most dog-like scent of all my dogs and it was STRONG), but also because he had a lot of energy. He only slowed down when he was a senior pup.

How many dogs do you live with now?

Just 2, but the small one is more discriminating and doesn’t need as many baths. Lol

Happy Friday! I’m all for the pet shampoo. If I had a dog, I’d probably be washing and spraying the poor thing, daily. We use highly scented cat litter so all our kitties have that eau de dryer sheet. HAHA! That said, I’ve never found anyone’s cat to have a particular odor. Dogs, however, smell like… well, dog. 🙂

How many kitties are bossing you around these days, lady?

I’m a full on cat lady, but I would pass on this. 🙂 I buy unscented litter and avoid fragrances for anything cat related, except for catnip scented!

None of the cats are crazy about water except Louis. He loves drinking out of faucets and is fascinated by the shower stall. He doesn’t mind getting a little water on his fur. He has a lot of characteristics of a Norwegian forest cat so I think it’s in his genes. 🙂

Louis sounds fun. 🙂 I’ve never had a water kitty but would love to know one someday. Maybe someday he’ll try jumping in the bath? That would be hilariously cute!

Louis is such a sweetheart! I’m so lucky to have him. When he showed up he was wearing a collar and was super friendly. I have a suspicion he was dumped by his previous owners. Their loss! They clearly didn’t deserve him.

I haven’t a bath in a while, but I have a feeling Louis would be very curious about the tub filling up with water. When he’s thirsty he’ll jump in the tub and wait for me to turn on the water. He’s definitely got me trained. 🙂

P.S. That pic of Connor and Tabs is so cute! I love how she’s looking at him.

He was waiting to find his special forever family — yours! You have to find out about the bath thing. I bet he’ll jump in without any hesitation!

P.S. I love that pic, too. He’s so patient with her. The other day she was petting him and saying “Good boy, good boy. I love you!” and even though he was totally over it, he let her pet him for as long as she wanted.

Yes, now I’m curious to see what he would do with a big tub of water! That’s so cute that she was talking to him while petting him. Tabs is such a sweetheart!

Hahaha! No way I could EVER have shampooed Nora. At least not without a kevlar suit. She did a pretty good job keeping herself clean. I love the way sun warmed cat fur smells.
The only time we used shampoo on the horses was before a horse show. Usually Mane N Tail or Head and Shoulders. Sometimes if the horses came back from turnout really dirty our trainer would have the grooms use some industrial strength degreaser, but I hated that, so I’d insist upon bathing Lucy myself. Otherwise, just a really good curry session and lots of brushing to get all the dirt out is enough for horses. All of our friends agreed that Lucy was the best smelling horse ever. I used to love burying my nose between her neck and shoulder and inhaling.

A pass for me. Our basset hound would smell great with this stuff, but then would scratch himself silly. He doesn’t do well with scented pet products at all. Then again neither do I with a lot of scented products for humans lol ;). Hope you have a Happy Friday.

I’m not big on heavily scented products for the cats. I give them a bath once a year in the spring. It helps get some of that loose hair out and cuts down on the shedding and hairballs for the summer. Also, sometimes Wendell starts to look a bit raggy and needs a little sprucing up. I use Tropiclean Gentle Coconut pet shampoo. It has a light coconut scent to it, but doesn’t make them smell like it. Sometimes I think they both smell like stuffed animals. You know, that sort of stale dusty smell of a stuffed animal that has been sitting around a room for a long time. No? My family doesn’t know what I’m talking about either.

I wouldn’t use it on my cat, as I rarely wash him anyway as he cleans himself really well. Maybe on the dogs, I mean the normal dog wash scent is absolutely horrible & one of my dogs is a Jack Russell so he stinks a lot just naturally (Jack’s totally have a different scent to normal dogs, it’s definitely a distinctive Jack scent). Although he will still roll in dirt or something gross 5 seconds later, so it’s really just for me when I’m bathing him.

Scented pet products are unnecessary! Because cats and dogs groom themselves they would ingesting whatever scent ingredients are in the product – not to mention that with their keen noses it would probably be very disruptive to them to smell like something other than themselves.

I used to wash my cat with an oatmeal and goat milk shower gel. He smelled so good afterwards. Also, I used to brush his teeth with a fish flavour toothpaste. He loved the toothpaste not the teeth brushing. lol
