Unsung Makeup Heroes: Revlon Colorstay Crème Eyeshadow in 715 Chocolate

Crazy for Chocolate

What’s an unsung makeup hero? For me, it’s an oftentimes underrated makeup morsel, a permanent collection product that scoots under the radar screen of many makeup lovers but regularly rocks my world. The long-running Unsung Heroes series features some of my favorites.

What’s that Christmas carol that goes, “‘Tis the season for creams, fa la la la laaaa, la la la laaaa!”? Creams are a “go-to” for gaggles of makeup lovers when it’s cold outside, but Revlon Chocolate is an “all-year” obsession for me.

Formally known as Colorstay 175 Crème Eyeshadow in Chocolate, it’s a drugstore secret treasure at just $6.99, and if you don’t have excess time to spend on your makeup but still like to wear a little somethin’, it will be your ? jam.

I’ve been wearing it a lot since I started growing out my grays, because the way my grays are growing out now, they don’t look purposeful yet because they don’t go from root to tip. It just looks like I missed my last two coloring appointments and can’t get my life together, so if I don’t wear at least a little eye makeup, I look disheveled. So Chocolate has been coming to my rescue.

Chocolate’s from Revlon’s long-wearing Crème Eyeshadow line, and if you haven’t tried these potted shadows before, you gotta get on that. They’re like the MAC Paint Pots, but cheaper, and slightly creamier.

Granted, they’re less pigmented than the Paint Pots, but I think that’s one of their selling points because that sheerness makes it easier to blend out the edges.

Perfect for “I’m already late! Gotta get this makeup on LIKE NOW!” looks.

Chocolate is a cool-toned taupe, and it functions like a contour color on my hooded lids. I apply it on my lids and in my crease with either a domed eyeshadow brush or an angled fluffy brush, and with it I can have my eyes looking more deeply set and defined in 60 seconds. I add a thin line from the liquid liner love of my life, Clinique Pretty Easy Liner, smudge the edge with a pencil brush, whack on a layer or two of mascara, and I’m done.

That’s what I did for my makeup here, which from start to finish — I kid you not — took five minutes, because I was running late for a lunch date with a friend (Hi, Shakun!). Side note: We went to Panera, by the way, and I ordered my favorite, the Fuji Apple Salad. Have you tried it? Divine! It’s got dried apples, juicy chicken and a tangy dressing, and it’s so, so GOOD.

Sorry, salad tangent, ha ha!

Back to the eyeshadow… The mostly matte finish is very Chanel-esque, but if you look closely, you can see tiny little glitter sparkles, and those pieces of micro-glitter are crucial, babe, because that slight amount of shimmer that bounces light off your lids means that the shadow never looks patchy, dry or flat. If you have fine lines, Chocolate is fabulously forgiving.

One last thing: If you’re a fan of MAC Satin Taupe, you’ll love this as a base underneath it! It complements Satin Taupe so well. And do a bit of MAC Prunella on your lash lines while you’re at it, will ya?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Lovely makeup and lol but I know exactly what you mean about the grays not looking purposeful yet. The transition period is the toughest part, stay strong!

    Have a blessed Friday Karen!

Thanks, Krystal. I’m excited to see what my natural hair color looks like after all these years, but at the same time I wish I could just skip all the hard stuff at the beginning, ha ha ha!

Sounds like a great find! I think your hair is looking great. I don’t even see any regrowth. 🙂

I’ve been hiding it with angles and a long, sideswept bangs. 🙂 You can see it on the top of my head and at my hair line with the baby hair!

I love that eye look. I have forgotten about Revlon in my “makeup snobbery”. I may have to check them out. I used to love their lipsticks in the ’80s.
Anyway, I wanted your thoughts on buying beauty products at Marshall’s. I was there yesterday buying some things for my mother-in-law and saw some skincare products from known brands. I didn’t buy anything because I wasn’t sure how long they were on the shelves. have you gotten anything there?

    Enjoy the weekend!

      Hi Jane,

I know a lot of people do it, but I usually don’t myself because there’s a chance that the items are diverted product, which means they can be counterfeit, diluted formulas, or old, expired formulas. Here’s some reading on the subject that you might found helpful:

I have this shadow in my collection! It is a great one, but I feel I haven’t used it in ages. Maybe I should crack it out again ?.

I own this and I love it when I have no time but I still want some color on my eyes. It makes a quick smokey eye so easy!

I immediately thought of Satin Taupe when I saw the first picture, a shade that I reach for often. Need to find that base then!

I’m turning into one of those people, or I guess I’ve been one for a while, that if they don’t sell it at Sephora, I don’t see it. I’m not a makeup snob but rather someone who really, really, really needs to see how a shade is going to look on my face.
Thanks for the lowdown on the Revlon shadow.

Also, about that salad, I love apples in salad. I also love pears in salad. Pears, walnuts, a bit of bleu cheese and some bitter greens! Yum! I also love fresh mandarin slices and fresh pineapple in a salad. Can you tell it’s almost lunch time here? I’m getting rumbly. But, as much as I like fruit in salad, I’m not so nuts about fruit salad, per se. Mix a bunch of fruits together in a bowl and I get upset and confused about what I’m eating.

P.s. Do you guys take Connor to see Santa Claus? What’s on her list?
