Drugstore Product Review – Aveeno Continuous Protection Sunblock SPF 30

Yes! It’s officially summer, which means it’s time to bring your cookies to the nearest beach/pool/nearby body of water for some fun in the sun. Before you head on out into the summer sun, do yourself a favor and slather on some of the newest sunscreens out on the drugstore shelves. There are plenty of great brands to choose from.

To get you started on your journey to sunscreen nirvana today’s review is on a one of my favorite new sunscreens on the market, Aveeno Continuous Protection Sunblock Lotion.

While I was wandering around Long’s I saw that this was on sale. I bought this on a whim without really knowing anything about it, but I’ve always liked Aveeno body lotion products so this couldn’t be too bad. I purchased two tubes: Continuous Protection Sunblock Lotion Face SPF 30, and the regular Continuous Protection Sunblock Lotion SPF 30.

The formulas are slightly different in texture. The body sunblock is lighter, fluffier and drier to the touch after application. The face sunblock is slightly thicker and feels just a touch greasier, but not by much. If you’re trying to save a buck you can probably get away with just by with just purchasing one tube to use all over.

The active ingredients are: avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate, octocrylene, and oxybenzone. Both formulas contain something called an “active photobarrier complex,” which the Aveeno website claims is “a unique, patented blend of sunscreen ingredients that are stabilized, so these formulations don’t break down as quickly in the sun like other sunblocks.”

How I use it
I slather this product on 30 minutes before going running outside. I also use it when I get out of the shower it in place of my regular lotion on any exposed limbs o’ skin. I put a LOT on, and because it’s thick I spend some time working the product in. It dries fairly quickly, though.

What I like about it
This sunscreen has several great things going for it. The first is the scent! The smell of a product is a big thing for me, and when I lifted up the top and took a whiff I was instantly in love. The lotion stuff smells fresh and lemony, and very summery.

At first I was wary of the thicker and slightly greasy consistency of the face lotion, but it has not broken me out (knock on wood). When I work up a heavy sweat the lotion does not get runny and start puddle up in white sunscreen pools on my hairline, unlike other lighter SFP formulas like Olay Complete. Once I put this stuff on my face it stays on! Aveeno Continuous Face doesn’t sting or burn my eyes at all when I get my sweat on, which is another big plus. And you know that creepy grey cast that some sunscreens give darker brown skin? I don’t get that from this product.

The body version is an equally outstanding performer. Even though I put on a ton of it I don’t get sticky arms or legs. It feels moisturizing, too.

What I don’t like it
While there is little I would change about this product, I do wish that it was waterproof, rather than water resistant. And I wish I could get this in a big, industrial-sized bottle to keep in my bathroom.

The final word
Trust me, you’ll probably love this stuff. I’m almost finished with my first tube and I will be bringing a few tubes with me when I leave for Hawaii!

I’ve already started my list of places to see/things to do when El Hubby and I get to Oahu next week. So far on my list:

Afternoon tea at Sheraton Moana Surfrider
Snorkeling at Shark’s Cove
Eat at Giovanni’s shrimp truck
Hike Diamondhead
Breakfast at Duke’s

And lots of surfing, of course!

I hope your Tuesday so far has been been mellow and stree-free.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
