Have You Ever Had a Mullet?

Make the mullet great again!

For the record, I’m not anti-mullet. In fact, I have a deep abiding love and appreciation for Connor Claire’s baby mullet!

I’ve also had a mullet before, but it was unintentional. A stylist at a froufrou San Francisco salon I used to go to “razored” my hair a little too enthusiastically once, so rather than leaving with “J. Lo’s latest hair” (which was how the stylist sold me on the idea), I left with steep, shaggy, disconnected layers — or, in plain-speak, one hell of a mullet.

I’ve seen mullets that work on people, but…this one did not work on me.

My hair’s wavy on the top layers and straight underneath, so the top parts puffed up and radiated outward like a bowl cut that took a very, very wrong turn, and the straight parts underneath kept flat. The only way I could wear my hair down and have it look halfway decent was to straighten it out, and even then I still looked like a Filipino Carol Brady impersonator. For months I wore my hair up in a ponytail.

Was it the worst haircut I’ve ever had? Naw, but that unintentional mullet is definitely up there. Easily top 5 of all the bad ones.

How about you? Have you ever had a mullet?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Never had a mullet, but had some haircuts, styles I regretted. In ’78 I did the Barbra Streisand perm look. Not one of my favorites.

    Hope all is going well!

I HAVE, now that I think of it!! It was a mullet with a TAIL + “Sun-In” highlights. The beginning of my Durannie days. ;D
Sorry, no pics, so it must…not…have…happened…??

Yes! An unintentional mullet. I asked to have my face frame long layer lightened up but she cut the length..it shrunk up to my ears instead. I was called poodle head by my sisters and had to wear a ponytail for a month.

My first response was to say heck no. But, your Carol Brady reference made me remember that yes, I too had a shag that went bad. And I ended up with
a style resembling Carol Brady’s do.

But, I love Connor Claire’s baby mullet! She’s so pretty! Does she favor your side or Hub’s?

Never had a mullet but my husband loves telling me about his glorious mullet in the 7th grade. My worst haircut also involved a razor!

HAHAHA yeah, I guess a too-short shag (now I’m dating myself!) could be called a mullet. It FELT like a mullet because it was too short and I hated it!
I still often layer the front and top of my hair because it’s fairly fine and limp and the layers plus “product” make it look fuller and fluffier, which I like. It might not be a style, but I get compliments on it, so I guess it looks ok.

For many years I had short hair and then in the late 80’s decided I wouldn’t get my hair cut for a year – when you have fine ( but lots of it) curly hair, growing it out is a tortuous experience not least because at the slightest sign of damp or humidity you end looking like a dandelion has taken up residence on top of your head.
Anyways, after scouring through many magazines and choosing a long layered look I really liked, I took the photo of it in with me ( so the hairdresser knew exactly what I meant. Hah!) and came out with an horrendous mullet. I was so horrified I couldn’t speak. It took years to get rid of that ghastly looking V shaped thing ( from the back)…..

Yeah, I took pictures with me, too, but I guess the hairdresser thought he knew better what I wanted than I did myself. It was WAY too short and it took quite a while to grow it out. I have almost never had anybody cut my hair for me since. I think maybe 3 times since then. I cut it myself so that I have nobody to blame but myself if I end up not liking how it looks. I remember once I told another stylist I wanted my hair shoulder length and the first cut she made was at my EARLOBE. I don’t know what about “shoulder length” she didn’t understand, and I wasn’t sitting with my shoulders hunched up to my ears, although maybe I should have been. I told her to stop right away before she had cut one more bit. It took me months to grow out that one stupid section and I was irritated about it the whole time!!!

Yeah, what is up with that?? You’d think taking a picture in with you would be enough but noooo!
I’ve never gone in with a request for a ‘style’ since. I just ask the hairdresser for a trim to keep the split ends at bay?

I had a 70’s mullet but my hair is curly so it did really look like a mullet !
Now my hair is like Dianna Ross

Where I went to get my haircut back in the day in 7th-8th grade they called it a “bi-level” cut, and I had one! LOL. It morphed into some kind of other cut after awhile that had a tail.

Never. But I did have short hair at age 8, that almost verged on a mullet. My mother insisted on having my long hair chopped because it had such a tendency to get severely tangled in the course of a day (she could have solved the problem by giving me a decent hairbrush and a purse to carry it in).

No, I never had a mullet, but two of my sisters had one back in the days – I still cry laughing when I see the pictures. Totally did not work.
To be fair, my bangs with round, light blue glasses weren’t the best look either.

Karen you crack me up…”a Filipino Carol Brady impersonator”. My SIL had that do back in the day and she’s Filipino. I don’t know which style was worse-hers or mine when I chopped off my dark long locks (b/c short hair was in) and I came out with what has forever been dubbed the “Dutchie Boy Cut” because my hair looked like the Dutch Boy paint logo’s do. Have a great weekend!

Seeing this question posed in my inbox made me smile! Filipino Carol Brady! But then I read your bad haircut posts and oh I feel your youthful pain. I have never had a mullet – after 1st grade’s “I tried to get rid of my bangs by cutting them off the night before picture day” debacle, I usually preferred my hair long and drugstore permed (yikes), excluding 5th grade’s Princess Di style and 8th grade’s short/layered/permed style (it was the 80’s). I absolutely adore Connor’s baby mullet! My son naturally had a mullet before his first haircut transformed him into a sweet little man. Though he would look like a certain dictator when that particular haircut would get wet…it was cute and alarming at once.

This post was great and so are the comments. I wanted to shout out to some like it was a revival. Preach, sisters!! HAHA! I’ve never had a mullet but have definitely had the Dutch Boy (mentioned by Valerie above) a couple of times. My bestie had the Sun In tail in the Duran Duran years, too, like FeyFrau. I think every boy I knew in Jr High/High School had a mullet at one time or another. Many of them with perms. There’s definitely some regret there. 🙂
