Saturday Surfing, Aug. 8, 2020

August 8th, 2020 by Karen 22 Comments

Summer fun on this sweet Saturday!

I was shocked — ABSOLUTELY FLABBERGASTED! — when I found out future Hall of Fame NFL quarterback Tom Brady doesn’t eat tomatoes, because I cannot comprehend life without tomatoes. ?

Why!?

Apparently, they can cause joint inflammation. Who knew?!

Well, too bad, Tom, because you are no longer invited to my house for lunch today, because I’m having homemade bruschetta.

I’ve been eating so. Many. Tomatoes. Lately. Like, obnoxious amounts of ’em because we have a couple of very productive tomato plants on the back deck. El Hub, otherwise known as “The Keeper of the Tomato Plants,” must’ve pleased the tomato gods this year, because they’ve blessed us with a profound amount of the fruit. And yup, tomatoes are fruit! (I’m full of fun facts this morning.)

We’re doing bruschetta, caprese salad, tomato basil pasta… Basically, if a dish contains tomatoes, chances are we’re eating it, and it’s been glorious!

YUM!

One thing I’ve yet to try, though, is a tomato pie. A friend of mine on Facebook posted one she made, and I’m extremely curious about it. If you happen to have a recipe, please let me know. Or any other good tomato recipes too! — which reminds me, I need a tomato and grilled cheese sandwich, STAT. Maybe I’ll have one of those for lunch instead… Sorry, Tom Brady, you still aren’t invited. ?‍♀️

How about you? What are you up to today?

  • Here’s how to find the perfect “my lip but better” shade.

This looks like fun.

Someone make me these ASAP.

I love Saturday surfing posts! Those tomatoes look amazing! We have one tiny one we are waiting on. Meanwhile, the basil has taken over our deck!

Tom Brady also thinks drinking a lot of water will prevent sunburn, so I say go ahead & enjoy your tomatoes!

Interesting. He’s still not invited over, but if he did stop by, I’d offer him
      some sunscreen. ?

So I saw the hibiscus in your IG story a few minutes ago and it so happens that we have the exact same one in our backyard! Is that your’s?

I’m jealous of all the tomatoes, because our’s are played out now. It’s just too hot. They were so, so good while they lasted, though! ??

I wish! Connor and I took a two hour walk yesterday and we saw it in front of someone’s house. I couldn’t resist taking a snapshot! Do you happen to know the variety?

P.S. If you lived in my neighborhood I’d save some tomatoes for you!

Yeah, tomatoes and supposedly all nightshades increase joint inflammation. At least according to a friend of mine who’s an acupuncturist. I have arthritis but that doesn’t stop me from enjoying tomatoes, eggplant and potatoes. I’ve never met a potato I didn’t love. Lol.
I used to have a recipe for a tomato tart that had a part cornmeal crust, either a ricotta or goat cheese base and then 1/2 inch thick slices of beefsteak or heirloom tomatoes places on top. With fresh ground pepper and flakey Maldon sea salt. Dang I’ve been digging through all my cookbooks and recipe files and I still can’t find that recipe again. I don’t even remember if it was in a cookbook or an old issue of Gourmet. Sigh. Don’t judge, I probably have over 250 cookbooks.
What types of tomatoes are you growing? I’m assuming they’re in pots? I’ve given up trying to grow tomatoes. I’ll go to pick a nearly, perfectly ripe tomato only to find some neighborhood critter has eaten the bottom of the tomato. Sigh.
BTW, I think I see the cause of global warming in that picture of Connor. That smile could melt the polar ice caps! Thanks for sharing such a beautiful picture of her with us.

“Tomato pie” might depend on where the person is from. For me, tomato pie is a square pizza with nothing but tomato sauce (a Philly thing).

Tom Brady is also a vegan (?) but yes, according to some eating templates, the tannin in tomatoes (potatoes, bell peppers, egg plant, and tobacco) can cause inflammation. Eat whatever does not cause an adverse reaction (skin, gut, etc.)! I used to eat tomatoes like apples with a touch of salt.

A crazy other method of finding your “lips but better” color is supposedly to match the shade of your nipple. A bit impractical at the drugstore or Sephora (or if you happen to not have darker nipples????) but I suppose it could be a way, albeit an odd way.

Thank you for the Elise Marquam Jahns link! It’s taking me awhile to come around, but I’m realizing what end of the spectrum of beauty YouTubers I need to be watching more of these days. 😉

    Enjoy tomatoes!!

I’ve never made it myself, but my mom makes this amazing tomato & brie pasta salad (we usually eat it warm, not cold). I think this is the same recipe: https://wickwoodinn.com/the-cooks-notes-silver-palate-cookbook-summer-pasta/ But she always uses penne, not linguine. (And always double- or triple-cream brie!) I’m not even a huge fan of brie cheese, but this is always so delicious, especially when the tomatoes are really good.

She also makes a great tomato pie, but I don’t know her recipe. It’s something like this: https://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/tomato_pie/ Hers doesn’t have any hot sauce (or at least, when she makes it for me, it doesn’t have any because I’m a wimp). I know the combination of cheese and mayo sounds disgusting, but it’s so good. I swear!

YUM to both those recipes. Thank you, Sienna!

P.S. I’m a hot sauce wimp, too. I usually leave it out!

I’m not a tomato person most of the year, but it’s so glorious when they’re truly in season. I had good luck a couple summers ago with this tomato and corn pie from Smitten Kitchen! https://smittenkitchen.com/2009/08/tomato-and-corn-pie/

Your tomatoes look amazing!!! My mom used to grow them when I was a kid and I would pluck one off the plant and rinse with the hose and eat it then and there. I suspect my tomato loving 3yr old would do that as well if we had enough sun. I recommend David Lebovitz’s Tomato tart. I use whole milk mozzarella and fresh minced thyme and oregano not goat cheese. It’s just pastry dough and brush Dijon on the interior and then sliced tomatoes, sprinkle salt & pepper & herbs and cheese and fold over the edges.

That’s just another reason for me to shun Tom Brady. HAHA! I’m so jealous of all your tomatoes! I’ve had a few this year but it’s not quite full-blown tomato season here yet. When it is, I’ll be raiding my friends’ gardens. We haven’t grown our own in a few years. The wildlife is killer – our pears are being decimated by squirrels. 🙁 My favorite is just a basic tomato sandwich on toasted bread with mayo and some salt and pepper. So good! 🙂

I know a lot of people adore him but I have a hard time letting go of Deflategate.

If you lived nearby I’d hook you up with some tomatoes. I just gave my buddy a big bag of the beefsteaks!
