Sonia Kashuk Synthetic Flat Top Blusher Brush: A Budget Friendly Beast

May 8th, 2008 by Karen 45 Comments

BOW DOWN before the mighty Sonia Kashuk Synthetic Flat Top Blusher Brush. Marvel at its multi-tasking prowess and how it applies blushes and foundations with ease. And don’t be surprised if you find yourself trembling — with glee! — at the cash register. Not only is this brush amazing, but it’s also cheap — $14.99. Holla!

Billed as a cream blush brush, its synthetic fiber head feels like velvet against my skin. Earlier this week when I used it with Sonia’s Creme Blush, it left just the right amount of color on my cheeks without any streaking. Blending with it was also a snap. It removed harsh lines with ease.

The brush is flat on the top of the head, which is not a totally revolutionary design, but it is one I’d never used before.

I couldn’t help but wonder what else I could use this brush with, so I experimented with it this afternoon. I think it also works great with…

  • Powder blush. After I applied powder blush with a regular MAC 116 blush brush, I used the Flat Top to apply a pop of color onto my cheeks. Tada! Glowy cheeks!
  • Powder foundation. I tried applying MAC Mineralize Loose SPF 15 foundation with the Flat Top, and um, WOW! The foundation looked like it melted into my skin. No streaking, no cakiness, nada — just perfectly applied medium foundation coverage.
  • Liquid foundation. Once again, the Flat Top delivered fantastic results. I dotted foundation onto my face, wet the brush head with MAC Fix+ and blended. The brush gave an almost airbrushed look to my skin, and I love how it’s small enough to use in the nooks around my nose.

The Sonia Kashuk Synthetic Flat Top Blusher Brush is a multi-tasking monster that eats my other wimpy blush brushes for breakfast!

And I also really dig the curved handle. It fits just right between my thumb and forefinger, which makes it easy to control.

Sonia Kashuk Creme Blush Brush

Price: $14.99
Use: To apply and blend cream and powder blushes, powder foundation and liquid foundation
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A+

This weekend I’m heading to my nearby House of Tar-ghay (Target) to get a backup, but you can also purchase it online from Target’s website.

I have a killer migraine headache right now, girls, and not even love for Sonia’s Flat Top brush has made it go away. I think I’m gonna take a couple Advil and rest on the couch in front of the TV for a while. Maybe Flavor of Love 3 will ease the pain.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Oh how I wish we had Sonia Kashuk here 🙁 I love my Anna Sui one which looks similar and I use it for powder blush and for diffusing colour. It deposits just the right amount of colour on and buffs everything nicely. But its natural hair so it isn’t so cream and liquid friendly.

I have a handful of Sonia Kashuk’s brushes and I have been pleased with every one. I also have used her tinted moisturizer for a few years now and LOVE IT. I think I’ll pick this one up the next time I’m at Target (like, say…tomorrow 😉

Ooh, hope you feel better soon!

I gotta get a couple of those SK brushes, the price is so right! I just always think I know what I need and then any time I get in front of a brush display I waffle and nitpick and completely forget if *that* brush is or is not almost exactly like that *other* brush I already have at home! I swear, I’m a brush neurotic! 🙂

I never thought I could use a brush for creamy things… but now I have to try it. Do you think this brush would work with the Tarte cheek stains? I don’t know why I never thought of this.haha

Hey Karen! Hope your migraine is better. I actually had a horrible one today too!! I decided to go to the gym anyway which actually made it better, go figure.

I’m so buying this brush. It sounds so versatile and I like the size for blending foundation into the skin, especially around the nose.

Bridget: I use brushes for cream anything these days and can’t believe I didn’t do it before. The blending you’ll experience is amazing.

I’m so excited about this! I have a few cream blushes and usually use my MAC blush brush, although I’m not really happy with how it applies. Otherwise, I end up using my fingers and I really don’t like dipping my fingers into my makeup.

So, this will have to go on my next list for Target. Grace loves Target, so we may have to pay them a special visit soon.

    Hope you’re feeling better, Karen.

OMG girl! Thanks for posting about the brush, it is a life-changing experience! *cue to Oprah*

Today I applied my mineral makeup with it and wow, it gave me much better coverage than my good ole reliable kabuki! At first I thought it was $19.99 which is a bit pricey for the House of Tarje’ but when I came to the cash register it was $14.99. And it is soft like a teddy bear, I kept on touching the brush even after applying my makeup.

I also used it for blushes and it does concentrate the color much better. It’s a 1-2 step brush for me right now. I need to try it with liquid foundation one day. This brush worths every pretty penny I spent. Thanks Karen for sharing! I hope you feel better, usually I drink lots of water when I have a headache. Also the Tension Tamer tea from Celestial Seasoning does help too.

now if they’d only stock it at my target! boo! i have the flat top italian badger brush from Coastal Scents… pure love! it was my go to brush instead of using the capplicator thingy that came with MAC’s MSF Loose pwder. I love it so much, I’ll look for this one as well. a slimmer, synthetic version of the italian badger is in order! how big/wide/circumference do you say the brush head is?

    Hi Evil Charity,

I haven’t tried her Tinted Moisturizer but now I have a bunch of makeup stuff on my list, including that product. I am very impressed with her line so far. I can’t believe it’s so cheap, too!

What other brushes from her line do you like?

    Hi Bridget,

Yes! I have a few of those cheek stains, too, and while I love how easy they are to apply I wasn’t always crazy about having to use my fingers.

Using a brush for cream products has made a ton of difference in my application, I’ve noticed! But if I’m in a rush I’ll still use clean fingers.

    Hi Tuprnut,

I was using my MAC brush too with mine and was never quite happy with it, either. This makes a big ole’ diff!

That’s so cute that Grace loves Target… she’s got good taste! It’s one of my favorite stores, too, LOL.

I hate migraines because I can feel ’em coming (like a storm!) and they take hours to go away, ugh. But I am feeling much better today, thanks!

    Hi Dao,

Ha ha! You’re so funny! (I love Oprah, btw)

Don’t you LOVE when you find a great brush? It’s like I wanna shout it from the rooftops! When you use it with your foundation don’t forget to wet your brush with the Fix+ — I’ve found that this gives it a more natural and less heavy look.

Thanks for the Tension Tamer tea tip. I don’t have that tea in my cupboard (I’m all about the Sleepytime) but will get it the next time I feel a migraine coming on.

The brush head is a little wider than a quarter. 🙂 With MAC MSF, I don’t use that sponge thingy either! It’s soft, but doesn’t do anything for me. Happy Friday!

Heh. I don’t have any (yet)! I was looking at the ones with the white handles last week (they were on sale… a little) but I think I want the ones with the curvaceous handles! That flat blush brush sounds really great, and I don’t have anything like that, so I can’t waffle about it! Bonus! 😀

Hi Karen! I’ve stumbled onto your page out of no where while surfing the net for a good website that gives great reviews and suggestions on certain beauty products and more. Your blog has helped me with a lot of questions I have while shopping around for new products or applying/blending eye shadows correctly. I recently saw this brush and was contemplating on whether I really needed this Sonia K synthetic brush because I think I have a pretty good amount of brushes already. I saw this brush last week and once I read your blog about this brush, I knew I had to have it! But when I checked the next day, it was sold out. I come back every now and then to see if they have any, but no luck. Anyways, thanks so much for helping me out with your reviews and tutorials =)
