What Makeup Shades Are the Most (and Least) Flattering on You?

October 14th, 2022 by Karen 7 Comments

Happy Friday, friend!

Let’s see, the shades that are the most flattering on my tan skin tone (I’m an NC42 in MAC), are pretty much anything in the warm, but not too warm, category. For eye makeup, warm browns, taupes, purples and bronzes are my go-to shades — NARS Fez and MAC Satin Taupe all day, every day!

There does seems to be a fine line, though, between warm and TOO warm. Like, if an eyeshadow has very strong warm red or orange tones, it looks really weird on me, like I’ve had a bad cold, or I’ve been crying.

Bright jewel tones look OK on me as well. I will take all the purple, blue and green eyeliner. 🙂

For blushes and lipsticks, I like warm shades of pink or coral; I feel like I can pull off reds and browns decently, too. I have a harder time with plum and wine shades, which is why I don’t wear them as much.

How about you? What makeup shades are the most and least flattering on you?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. TGIF!

For eyes, I stick with cooler browns, purples, and a little gray now and then. For cheeks, always pink. For lips, I stick with pink, mauve, berry, and plum. I have a couple of nudes, but still with a slightly pinkish tone to them. I can’t do anything orangey or coral; warm colors aren’t really flattering.

Thank you again for sharing the video about perimenopause last Saturday. I’ve sent it to friends and they’ve really responded to it.

You’re so welcome, Suzanne. I learned a lot from watching the video! I was so happy to share it. 🙂

What are you doing this weekend? Anything fun? I’m getting a haircut, which I’m looking forward to.

For my eyes, bronzes, browns, coppers, gold’s, are all really good. I also have a metallic khaki eyeliner I really like. For cheeks I can do peach, warm rose colors, warm light plums. Lips I look really good in slightly orange reds, peach, berries…

Gray always makes me look sickly. Same with cool toned neutrals. I don’t like dark colors on my lids and creases – I keep everything close to my lashline. Also not a fan of cool pinks and reds. Brown lips look awful on me. Oh and super light colored lips – my lips are kind of a light plummy color naturally.

With darker red hair and extremely pale skin with rosy cheeks, anything too warm looks odd, I actually wear cooler colors better despite the red hair/green eyes. Eyes I go for greys, taupes, cool plums. Lips are something in the pink/nude variety though I have a blue undertone red lipstick from Chanel that works.

Cool taupes are awful on me. I know, they are elegant and sophisticated, but I look 10 years older and tired like an addicted person, I dare to say.

For the eyes I like blues and greens or warm browns and reds. For eyeliner I also wear dark green or purple (I have green eyes).
For blush I am all for peach.
My lips have a blue-ish undertone, so I love peach, coral, soft orangey brown, brick red or a earthy rusty coppery red. Plums and berries look horrible on my lips, so for my „autumn“ lip I go for a warm mauve or a rosewood or a berry brown.

My skin is super similar to yours… and I agree with the red/orange thing especially for eye makeup! It’s not great on me. But I do love me some matte browns and an occasional plum! For blush though- nothing purpley- somehow that looks super weird. A reddish pink blush ends up looking the most natural as fresh on me!
