Share Your Self-Care List

October 26th, 2022 by Karen 14 Comments

What’s currently on yours?

Since I found out that I would be laid off and my last day at work will be next Monday, I’ve been going back and forth between all the feels — stress, anger, acceptance and weirdly enough, relief, to name just a few.

A list of simple self-care is much needed for me today:

  • Wash face
  • Brush teeth
  • Fix hair
  • Wax ‘stache 🙂
  • Put on cute top and pants
  • Paint nails
  • Put on a little makeup
  • Put on earrings and a necklace
  • Work out
  • Write just for fun
  • Drink water
  • Eat enough protein (side note: I didn’t realize until I was an adult how critical this actual is, OMG)
  • Plan tomorrow
  • Do three job search tasks (they can be small ones)
  • Text a friend

I’m holding on to hope, though and letting the universe know that we’re all ready for all the good things it has in store for us.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Just curious . . . did you feel the earthquake near San Jose?

Nope, not at all. I heard from my brother about it. My mom and dad, who live closer to San Jose, didn’t feel it either.

Keeping you in our thoughts on the job front. I’ve been through 3 airline furloughs (why after the last one I finally finished the PhD. and changed careers). It’s not fun, but in some way, it’s liberating.

My self-care is 1. clean hair 2. wash face (current new fav’s Farmacy products, love their green clean cleansing balm which takes off everything but washes clean and doesn’t flare the acne and their waterless Vitamin C). 3. eat regular small meals with protein 4. No caffeine after 10 a.m. (otherwise WHEEEE! at 11 pm) and an hour of quiet before bed with no electronic screens, just music and/or a book.

I’ve been thinking of you, re: your job. I have some sort of terrible virus (tested negative for flu and COVID, but RSV is going around) – I’ve had a fever since Sunday. It’s a little scary because a coworker, only 39, died from RSV last summer – she’d just had a baby and had another toddler. Just heartbreaking. So my self care right now is resting, hydration, medicine. Also added in skincare because the fever makes me sweaty and gross. Hettie and Jiji are taking care of me.

Dude! So sorry to hear about your job.
    That sucks.
I don’t want to sound all mommish or Pollyanna but that will leave something bigger and better or smaller and less stressful for you.

Karen, please take care of yourself. It is understandable that you have so many feelings at present. Yes, keep up the protein and the self care. x

Karen, I’m sorry that you’re going through a layoff. I’ve gone through a similar situation at a job in the past, and it’s tough.

Some things I do for self care: Read a book by a beloved author (always brings me comfort), go for a walk outside, pet my dog, watch a romantic movie, indulge in takeout, and go to bed early.

Side note: I’ve been a reader of your blog for years, and I really admire your writing!

Oh, Karen, I am so sorry to hear about you being laid off. Self-care as a nurse is tough but even worse as I am furthering my degree–working full-time and going to school full-time. However, I honestly like to take a few hours every week and create a cocoon out of my office/study room. I buy pretty candles, make sure I have all of the water & snacks I will need, and make sure I have nice colors and textures-blankets, flowers, etc. for me to be able to hole up in there. If I am comfortable and feel nice in the space, I tend to be more productive.
When I am not burning the candle at both ends, self-care to me is running and experimenting with different play-lists and podcasts.
May I ask the brand name of pen in your picture? I like to use different colored pens for studying. That is a color that I don’t have but would like.
    Sending prayers/good vibes your way.

Being laid off always feels worse than choosing to leave. The end result is the same but one makes us feel powerless and the other , powerful. Can you try to reframe it as “Well, I wanted to leave there anyway…”? You say you feel some relief so maybe this is all for the best and the next job will be much more you. XXX

Good luck on your job search Karen! Sorry you got laid off.
I like all the things on your list but I would add:
Do a face mask and conditioning hair mask.
Pay some attention to the cat.

Hope you are able to find another job you like even more!
If you did a good job, don’t forget to ask for a recommendation for your next job.
    My self care list
-Stop eating sugar, it’s bad for you heart.
-Take time to listen to the cat purring.
-Sort through at least one drawer, shelf, or rack to declutter and donate stuff that doesn’t fit or isn’t being used.
    -Take some time to read.

I am so sorry to hear that. All the best on the job search front, you got this! My basic selfcare is shower and skincare, a bit of makeup and getting dressed and lately yoga, even if it is only for ten minutes – I am so stiff from sitting at my desk all day, and with 43 I really feel that in the way I move.

I usually don’t have a specific list but I guess it would be reg mani/pedis, minimal caffeine (I like sleeping) and unwinding at the end of the day by reading & relaxing with the hubby. This week is a bit different since I had a hysterectomy on Wednesday (yikes!) so it’s now resting, getting in walks up & down the hallway and keeping the cats from jumping on my lap. Lots of reading & Netflix in my immediate futur
