What’s the Oldest Piece of Makeup in Your Collection That You Still Use?

February 24th, 2023 by Karen 9 Comments

Old school NARS

I know, kinda gross, but let’s be real. Some of us don’t always stick very closely to expiration dates!

Last year I did a major makeup purge, so most of the ancient pieces from MBB Ye Olden Days are gone. However, one of the handful of items I kept was a NARS palette of single shadows and blushes from — wait for it — 2015.

Yup, I still use it. Eight years is a long time to hold onto makeup, but since I’m the only person who uses this palette and the powders don’t look or smell gross, I figure I should be fine.

How about you? What’s the oldest piece of makeup in your collection that you still use?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. TGIF!

Lol. Dear Daughter was home for two weeks at Christmas. She brought the original UD Naked palette I got for her back in undergrad maybe? So somewhere between 2011 and 2015. I said, “That’s looking a bit beat up, aren’t you worried about bacteria?” And my bio-chem major just looked at me and replied, “Mom there’s bacteria every where. On my skin, etc. I’m the only one who uses this palette, so in theory the only bacteria on it are mine. Chill out.”
So yeah, I also have the same palette but don’t use it as often as she does. I got rid of my MAC shadows from that same time frame and I’m pretty upset that I did because some of the colors have been discontinued. Oh well.

I don’t know the time frame, but the oldest piece I have is the Becca X Chrissy Teigen Glow Face palette (2 highlighters, blush, bronzer). They are the most perfect colors ever invented for my ultra-light, pink based skin and aren’t super glittery.

I have some depotted shadows in a Z palette from a 2012 Urban Decay Book of Shadows release, but I never really use them. (I think I keep them to gloat over, like Golem.)

But I have the NARS limited edition Steven Klein palette from 2015, as well as some Jane eye shadow singles that I first reviewed on Makeup Alley in 2002. Now, I’m pretty sure these are not the same actual shadows, but replacements. Still, the line was discontinued in 2009.

I may have a problem, lol!

I have a Nars Blush/Bronzer duo from circa 2015….Orgasm Blush and whatever the bronzer name. Lots of metal visible.

Good question! I don’t have dates, but I’m 1000% certain I have powder eye shadows from 2010 or earlier. I did purge a bunch of stuff awhile back, but I go by the same theory espoused here – I’m the only one who uses it, I clean my brushes regularly, and they don’t smell/seem crumbly or otherwise look like they should be tossed. I’m actually thinking now of replacing some of them with better formulas and tossing the rest, which I really don’t use.

I have a Too Faced eyeshadow palette that I bought when my husband and I were dating – and that was 10 years ago. Normally I purge mascaras and liners due to contamination but shadows tend to stick around in my kit for a LONG time. (I apply with a clean brush each time).

Girl, you know I can’t part with my Evolution Revolution lipglass. I may not use it anymore but when I dig it out from the back of my drawer, it reminds me of a different time before all of our major life changes. It brings back good memories of my early twenties and reminds me that I have a friend on the other side of the keyboard going through the same stuff with me.

I think I might win – I am currently using up a Bourjois loose powder my mother bought when I was in kindergarten (198mumble)! I admit it was mint in box until I started using it recently. (I also have some Bourjois single pot baked shadows from that Paris trip of hers, this stuff seriously lasts forever and not powder so nothing to get contaminated.)

And if we count perfume, a 1970s bottle of cologne I inherited from my grandfather… damn, we’re all packrats in my family.

I have a Chanel quad, Enigma, from 2010 (love your post on it! https://makeupandbeautyblog.com/product-reviews/puzzled-by-smokey-eyes-maybe-the-chanel-enigma-eyeshadow-quad-can-help/)

I wish they would make quads like that NOW!!! I normally would never keep something that old, but like many of you, I am the only one using it. I also have a glossy YSL lipstick still new in package from 2013.
