How Has Your Makeup Style Evolved as You’ve Gotten Older?

May 19th, 2023 by Karen 8 Comments

I’m wearing Laura Mercier Clique, and Connor is wearing MAC Quite the Standout

Here are mine, in a nutshell

  • These days I rely more on a bright lip, blush and lots of mascara; it’s the easiest way for me to look polished without having to deal with eye makeup.
  • Speaking of eye makeup, I wear thinner eyeliner because hello hooded lids.
  • On that note, I rarely do dramatic wings or whatnot – too hard to make them even and to get them to work with the hooded sitch.
  • Oh, if I wear eyeshadow, I stick to easy eyeshadow looks with one or two shades at the most, and they’re usually in lighter tones. I rarely ever wear dark eyeshadows because figuring out the placement is too stressful, OMG!
  • I do very light bronzing and absolutely no contouring. I don’t have as much collagen in my cheeks as I did back in the day, so I don’t need any extra definition of my cheeks and what not. I also figure the shape of my face is what it is. *shrugs*
  • In regards to foundation, I typically wear a very sheer tinted moisturizer base because 1) heavy powders and foundations look really obvs on me now, especially in full sunlight, and 2) a sheer base makes it easier to reapply sunscreen. Also, I don’t like the feeling of wearing a lot of layers on my skin!

This is what I’m thinking my makeup collection will look like going forward

  • Lots and lots of beautiful, bright lipsticks with a handful of shimmery nude glosses! I mean, I will always make room for a nude lipstick, but there’s something to be said about a bright pink, red or coral, especially if I have to get dressed up. I stand up straighter and feel seen when I wear those colors.
  • Plenty of mid-toned neutral shadows (cream and liquid, because they’re the easiest to blend) for my lids.
  • ALL THE BLUSH.
  • ALL THE SHEER TINTED MOISTURIZERS.
  • A handful of eyeliners that draw the thinnest, most precise lines and don’t bother my water lines. (Side note: I can’t just seem to throw whatever I want on my water lines anymore. So many pencils make me itch now.)
  • One or two bronzers that blend without effort. I’m thinking I’m going to go back to the Chanel cream one in a jar. Old school baby.
  • Some basic brow stuff. Boring but necessary.
  • Mascaras that I hopefully don’t hate. LOL! It’s been a struggle since I quit using lash serum and my lashes have reverted to their formerly wimpy selves.

How has your makeup style changed as you’ve gotten older? Oh, and bonus points if you want to list how you think your collection will look like going forward!

Karen

I’m a basic “me-but-better” kind of makeup gal, though I’ve almost always been this way, so there hasn’t been much of an evolution as I’ve aged. Same basics as you except no lipstick, unless it’s very natural and it’s a special occasion. I’m not a color person in my clothes or makeup. Or my walls, furniture or vehicles, come to think of it!
HAHA! Going forward, I see it being exactly the same. Tinted sunscreen, mascara, brow pencil, powered eyeshadow as upper lash liner, and blush.

PS Happy Friday! I hope you have a great weekend and nice weather.

Happy Friday to you, too! Thank you for reminding me about the powdered shadow as liner trick. It’s a great one and I don’t do it enough.

Will you have both your boys home for the summer?

It’s soft and very forgiving, which my experienced eyes appreciate. HAHA!

Yes, thank goodness. My “away at school” boy came home yesterday morning. Of course, he just dropped off all his stuff and headed out to meet friends at the Rap Festival in Montreal (Metro Metro), so I haven’t really seen him yet. I’m so happy they’ll both be home for a couple of months!! <3

My makeup style really hasn’t changed much. I never contoured or bronzed. I wear my blush very lightly. Even in college, I just used liner, mascara, a bit blush and a light lipstick. I dotted foundation on when I needed it and a red lipstick when it was a fancier occasion.
I’ve always had hooded lids, so I never did a winged liner. Shadows were and are always one or two colors of easy to blend powder shadow.
My foundations are pretty much the same, too. NARS Sheer Glow, Armani Luminous Silk, MAC Face and Body. Surrat Dew Drops is new for me. And when I can try the colors in person, I’ll buy a bottle of Shu Uemura, Suqqu or Shiseido foundation when I’m in Japan.
I think the only difference is I spend more time on skincare and I’m more religious about wearing plenty of sunscreen.

I wear so much less! I don’t like much coverage on my face, and i stopped bothering with under eye concealer years ago and just embraced the darkness – with very fair translucent skin and freckles coverage around the eyes just looks odd and out of place. I do a tinted sunscreen, if that, and concealer over any blemishes.

I wear very little eye makeup, mostly because of eczema on my lids and eye irritation, but also hooded eyes! I usually just do liner (and rarely dramatic wings anymore) and mascara.

Some changes are by necessity because I’ve developed a ton of allergic reactions as an adult (a condition called Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, in addition to just getting more sensitive skin and eyes with age).

I totally hear you about the undereye concealer looking a little wonky. I’ve had to switch to a sheerer version because when I do full-coverage it looks so off! I may try skipping it completely come summer. 😀

I wear considerably less makeup now. Sheer foundation over a mineral sunscreen, an ILIA or BOOM by Cindy Joseph multi stick for cheeks, eyes, and lips. Chanel lipstick if I’m “dressing up” for a meeting. Mascara is a must but I can’t seem to find one that I’m not wearing all around my eyes two hours after application (I have dry skin and don’t use cream around the eyes if I’m going to wear mascara so not sure why it always flakes/smears on me)

I’m also on the hunt for a great mascara! I’ll let you know if I find something. 🙂
