Face of the Day: Simple Smokey Eye with Chanel Winter Nights Quad

June 5th, 2008 by Karen 43 Comments

This week I received some nice e-mails asking about the smokey eye makeup I wore to my lil’ brother’s graduation last weekend. This morning, I thought I’d try the full face look again.

As far as complete looks are concerned, this one is quick and easy to do. I used shades from the Chanel Winter Nights Quad, a versatile set with four basic, but pretty shades of pink, peachy gold, green and light brown. The look works well for the office or for things like family functions or semi-formals.

The first layer of eye makeup…

  1. MAC Soft Ochre Paint Pot on the browbone and fully into the crease
  2. MAC Quite Natural on the lid and barely into the crease

The second layer of eye makeup…

  1. Peach-gold shade from the Chanel Winter Nights Quad on the browbone and on the lower lash line (layered on top of the dark green shade mentioned below)
  2. Light brown shade from the Chanel Winter Nights Quad on the lid and barely into the crease
  3. Dark green shade from the Chanel Winter Nights Quad on the lower half of the lid and the lower lash line (layered on top of the Lancome waterproof liner mentioned next)
  4. Lancome Le Stylo Waterproof Long Lasting Liner in Noir on the upper and lower water and lash lines

The corresponding shades from the Chanel Winter Nights Quad (Note: For this look, I didn’t use the pink shade):

Brows

  • MAC Concrete Eyeshadow

Dark circles (trust me, they’re pretty bad today!)

  • MAC Select Moisturecover Concealer in NW 25
  • Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder #2

Face

  • Laura Mercier Oil-Free Foundation in Suntan Beige
  • Laura Mercier Translucent Powder
  • Stila Bronzing Powder in Shade 02

Cheeks

  • Redpoint Airbrush Effects Blushwhip in Glow

Lips

  • MAC Sublime Culture Cremestick Liner
  • Chanel Zanzibar Aqualumiere Lipstick
  • Chanel Glossimer in Gazelle

Good morning, beautiful! I hope you slept well. Last night my brother came over and we hung out for a spell; I gave him yet another bottle of conditioner along with a good lecture about post-college job hunting, LOL. I have to take care of errands today in preparation for the trip tomorrow. I like to carry my makeup with me onto the plane (to protect it from evildoers!), and I need to get some big, clear Ziploc bags to store everything in. I should also pick up a travel sample size of Bumble & Bumble Super Rich conditioner.

Are you ready for Friday? Let me know how you’re doing.

Looking pretty as usual Karen ! I have that quad !! Its beautiful, I might follow ya and try it step by step tmw. I have the Chanel Demure quad too, which I think is the daytime equivilent to Winter nights….really really similar..except the black shade.

OT: Are you getting any bits from the MAC Neo-Sci Fi collection ? or have I missed a post…?

    Hi Anna,

Thanks hon! I haven’t tried the Demure quad. I will have to do some investigating. 🙂

I did a big ole swatch and review on Neo Sci Fi and Solar Bits a few weeks ago, but I’ve yet to pick up anything. During May I had a slew of deadlines and I’ve just been working like a crazy person. 🙁 And now Cool Heat is coming out next week … I feel like I can’t keep up with the collections sometimes!

    How’s your day been?

Simply pretty, Ms. Karen! Btw, don’t buy the travel size bottles. Save your pennies and buy the empty travel kit that has those plastic bottles. You just go ahead and pour some of your stuff in there. I do that for my gym bag instead of carrying the full-size or travel size ones.

I have a tiny little question for you: do you have Sephora eyeshadows? I’m lemming the Sephora blockbuster palette but don’t know how pigmented their eyeshadows are. Plus I don’t have that store in my area so I can’t just drive there and check. Thanks ahead Karen!

    Hi Dao,

That’s a good idea, thanks! I do that sometimes when I have the time, but I’m going to be running around today so it’ll just be faster for me to get the small ones.

I had a Sephora eyeshadow years ago; I’m guessing they’ve probably reformulated it since the time that I had one, though. I am not always down for their makeup products (the brushes are another story) because for a long time I was super bitter about the reformulation of the eye makeup remover (the old formula was so good!). Anyhoo, I’ve seen that blockbuster palette and it looks really pretty. I wish I could tell you about the shadows, but unfortch I can’t right now, but when I’m in Hawaii I plan on popping into Sephora. If they have the blockbuster palette out then I’ll take a look at the shadows and tell you how they feel, about the pigmentation, etc. 🙂

I simply adore the lip colour you chose! It’s not overwhelmingly bright and it’s a gorgeous neutral coral-red. I was wondering if you know of a cheaper alternative lipstick with a similar colour because I don’t really have the luxury to spend so much on makeup these days.

Ooh..thats so pretty! I don’t have any chanel makeup but I may have to give some serious thought to one of those quads.

I’ve just seen some swatchs of the Cool Heat collection and I think I want all of the eyeshadows…just gorgeous!

I’m so pleased its almost the weekend, its been a long stressful week and I really need to relax!

Hope you’re having a good day.. Bx

Hi Karen!! You look AWESOME!! I love how your skin looks, especially the area under the eyes. I really want to get me some Laura Mercier goodies now!! I have a few questions.. I’m an NC35 in MAC, should I be using an NW colored concealer to cover my dark circles? How do you like the Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder?

I’m leaving for Hawaii too next week!! *high five* Have a great time there!!!

Wow, this is such a gorgeous look! And I’m the same way about my makeup bag. I recently went to Mexico, and my husband repeatedly rolled his eyes at me as I insisted on carrying my makeup in my carry-on tote. But I stood my ground 🙂 I have seen bags literally being tossed in the air, and my fragile shimmerbrick is just not up for that!

Have a blast in Hawaii! I am soooo jealous!

Hey Karen! It’s very pretty! You have to make me drool with envy again with Gazelle, which is not release over here in Singapore (or Asia?). I know of Winter Nights Quad from your blog and again, this was not released last year here. However, we have a Think Pink Collection from Chanel last September and the eye quad looks similar to Winter Nights. It’s my very first Chanel eye quad! I have forgotten the name of the quad but I can check it out when I get home tonight.

Yes, the weekend is coming. I’ll be seeing my dentist to have a conversation with him, let him know that he left a tooth remnant in my gums! I hope to seek closure to this episode.

    Hi Beth,

The quads are the gateway to the Chanel drug, I tell ya. You’ve been warned, LOL!

Yeah, Cool Heat looks pretty darn beautiful. I hope I can get to a counter when I’m on vacay so I can take a look at it.

Yeah, when I think about that old makeup remover I get a little teary. That stuff was the sh*t. I wish I stockpiled a bunch of bottles before they changed it. 🙁

I’m really happy to just be going some place with warm water! I’ll ride a few waves for ya!

    Hi Jenny,

I started using an NW concealer after going to a MAC seminar at Nordstrom. The makeup artist mentioned that most women — even those with NC tones — looked better with NW concealers. I prefer the NW concealer because they’re less yellow, and I think the pink/red tones help to hide the circles very well.

Girl, I LOVE LM Secret Brightening Powder! I can’t live without it, that’s for sure. 🙂

    Hi Paula,

When I was a student I couldn’t afford Chanel, either. I didn’t start buying it until recently. You still have lots of time to get more Chanel in your makeup bag. 🙂

Oh, it’s been so long I’ve been on a first date so I’ll have to vicariously through you. 😉 What look did you decide to go with? You’ll have to let me know how the date goes. I hope he’s nice!

    Hi Vivien,

The Chanel quads are quite pricy, but when you find one that you love it’s so worth the it! You’ll reach for it all of the time, plus, the colors are coordinated so it’s foolproof (I’m so your Chanel pusher right now, LOL). I gotta warn you though; those quads are like the Chanel gateway drug, LOL! It only took just one quad (Garden Party) and I was hooked.
