CoverGirl LashBlast Length Mascara: Coming Soon to a Lash Line Near You

August 12th, 2009 by Karen 14 Comments

covergirl lash blast length review

Today the original CoverGirl LashBlast Mascara has a *major* reputation; millions of ladies love it with almost cult-like Cult of CoverGirl LashBlast! devotion!

I, unfortunately, am not one of them.

Not that I hate it (because I don’t). I’ve just always thought it was only okay (it clumps a little on me).

That said, I can appreciate die-hard beauty fanaticism, and with LashBlast’s reputation in mind, I was looking forward to trying CoverGirl’s new LashBlast Length Mascara ($7).

New for fall

The full-scale deployment begins in September, with the little yellow tubes invading stores by the truckload, but if you can’t wait that long, mark your calendar for August 17… That’s when CoverGirl will pre-sell a limited number of tubes through CoverGirl.com before the big September launch.

Some marketing background

CoverGirl is claiming their newest member of the LashBlast family lengthens lashes by up to 80%. Wow, right?

They say that’s made possible by nylon fibers in the mix and a new ultra-long brush with more than 450 bristles (for precise, clump-free application).

Colorwise, the product will be available in four shades — Very Black, Black, Brown Black and Brown — and I tried Black.

First, the good stuff

Staying power — it’s no joke. There’s absolutely no smudging or flaking (yay!) even after a full day with it on.

Bare lashes

Yet at the end of the day, it’s still easy to remove, thoroughly washing out with my regular cleanser and a few splashes of water to rinse.

One layer of LashBlast Length

Up to and including two layers, I like the way it makes my lashes look. I feel like they’re smoother, thicker and noticeably longer, too, but when I go beyond two layers, things get kinda sketchy, with my lashes beginning to look bumpy and fibrous, ew.

Two layers of LashBlast Length

How well does it lengthen?

Pretty well, in that it does appear to add some length to my lashes.

How much?

Not quite 80%. I’d say the difference is more like 40% on me, but that’s a 40% I’ll happily take. 🙂

Changes I’d like to see

If I could, I’d make a couple tweaks to the product.

Three layers of LashBlast Length

At the top of the list, I really wish it held a better curl. I think it almost fights against my lash curler, like the two hate each other, releasing and straightening the curl with the very first coat.

And I wish it better defined my individual lashes. I was hoping for a lush fan of lashes spreading out across my lash line but got little groups of lashes sticking together instead.

Lastly, maybe I’m just clumsy (no maybe about it), but the brush feels too long. I have a hard time controlling it to apply mascara in the outer and inner ends of my lash line.

Overall?

I think it’s a good mascara for $7 — a downright great option for late-night emergency trips to the drugstore — but I don’t think I’m ready to join the LashBlast cult.

Price: $7
Use: On balance a very good lengthening mascara that doesn’t smudge or flake

You might like CoverGirl LashBlast Length Mascara if…

  • …you’re a fan of the original LashBlast,
  • …you’re on the market for a good lengthening mascara, and/or
  • …you like the sound of a $7 price.

Makes me work a little bit harder…

Heya, ladies. How are you doing today? I’m chugging along. I should be looking for a new freelancing gig, but I can’t seem to get motivated.

What I usually do to psych myself up for something is listen to music. One of my fallback motivational tunes is Christina Aguilera’s Fighter.

It’s kinda like my personal Rocky theme…

Yeah, not a fan of the original Lash Blast either. At all. If I’m going to pick up drugstore mascara, which I really tend to like, most of the time it’s going to be one of Maybelline’s line of great mascaras. Glad I’ll be able to skip this, thanks for the great review!

Covergirl mascara’s never work for me. In fact, none of there products to (except the glosses). I reccomend Maybelline XXL Extensions XX-Treme Length Mascara. It’s in the gold&black tube. That stuff lengthens my lashes to no end 🙂

Will there be a waterproof version? I find waterproof mascaras always hold a curl, including the original Lashblast. This is definitely something I’ll check out. The 2 coat photo looks really good to me.

Oh yeah, clumpy lashes are gross. I love lengthening mascaras, since I’ve already given up looking for a thickening one…that’s a lost battle…I like listening to any type of music, it always cheers me up 😀

is the brush skinnier than the original lash blast? cause that is the only thing i really hate about lashblast! and yea, you should try the waterproof versions cause it will hold those lovely curls better! 🙂

All the Lashblasts (the one on the orange tube and the shimmer one) totally blow. My everyday drugstore fave is L’Oreal Double Extend. It is really good for 8 bucks!!

I like the original formula so I will have to try this new one. I don’t know why I stopped using it but I remember liking it.

I’m not a LashBlast fan either. My fave drugstore mascaras are Loreal Voluminous. Dept store: Definicils!
When I want to get fired up, to clean, for example, I blare the version of William Tell Overture that is on the soundtrack for A Clockwork Orange. It is a speeded up, almost “Chipmunks” version. I can’t help but move faster when it plays.
Back in college, my roommate and I would use this song to pick up our dorm room and even our friends from down the hall would come and watch us – it was pretty funny, I guess. I was too busy cleaning to notice. But we could get it done in the time it took the song to play once. If it was really messy, we’d have to play it a second time.

      Hi Beth,

LOVE the Voluminous — especially the Carbon Black version.

What a hilarious story! I haven’t heard the song but I can totally imagine the scene with you and your roomie frantically cleaning. I think I need to try that someday, LOL!

I am a huge LashBlast fan & use it everyday. My lashes, fortunately, are already really long so i guess that’s why the original formula works for me, cause it primarily thickens what i already have giving me the false lash effect, but i will surely try this new version of LashBlast just because 😉

Karen, have you tried Rimmel Sexy Curves mascara. That mascara adds ridiculous length to my lashes that i didn’t think was possible cause as i said, they are already pretty long. But, what is more amazing is that it curls them too like nobody’s business. Since LB Length cause the curl in your lashes to go kapoot, maybe you give this one a try if you haven’t already & see if you likey.

Those pictures are really on the ‘eh?’ side. I haven’t been a fan of Lashblast myself so I don’t think I’ll be checking it out. And no curl? What’s long luscious lashes with a curl?

i haven’t been able to find a regular mascara that holds curl, only waterproof ones hold curl for me which really sucks because waterproof mascara is a pain to remove!
