MAC Make-Up Art Cosmetics Collection Pictures, Swatches and MORE First Impressions

Dagnabbit! I was supposed to start my laundry and go running this afternoon, but has any of that happened yet? No, of course not. My internal MAC Monster demanded I feed her swatches and pictures instead.

And who could blame her? — four stinky loads of laundry versus MAC’s upcoming Make-Up Art Cosmetics collection?

Well, you know how that went. 🙂

Within the humungo collection (34 pieces in all) are three different sets, each one with products designed by a different contemporary artist (painter Richard Phillips, illustrator Maira Kalman and photographer Marilyn Minter).

The artists of the MAC Make-up Art Cosmetics collection

Today I took a look at nine of the items, a few from each of the three sets.

A few thoughts…

  • Personal Taste Lipglass and Hold the Pose Lipstick apply super sheer; I really have to pack ’em on to get the colors to show.
  • Regarding the eyeshadows in the Notoriety quad, Skintone 1 (the shimmery pink) applies chalky and gritty on me with very little pigmentation; Rich & Earthy (the shimmery coral) and Skintone 3 (the warm, shimmery gold) apply smooth with rich color; while Notoriety (a shimmery, dark brown with golden sparkles) applies smoothly but surprisingly sheer.
  • Both the Skintone 3 and Crest the Wave eyeshadows look similar in swatches (shimmery gold), but once applied Crest the Wave looks cooler and more yellowish gold, while Skintone 3 appears warmer and more bronze.
  • Push the Edge Pigment (a shimmer purple) bears a striking resemblance to one of Urban Decay’s new fall shadows, Deluxe Eyeshadow in Freakshow.

I know it’s hard to draw conclusions about the full collection from such a small sampling (more on the way), but from what I’ve seen so far, I see a lot of pretty things, but nothing particularly breathtaking (except maybe On Display Lipglass, LOVE!).

The collection is expected to hit counters next Thursday — I wonder if MAC is planning another early release…

What do you think of these colors? Are any jumping out at you?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I made my mind up that I was going to be good and only get the Photorealism quad and Off the Page shadow. But after seeing your swatches I just may have to add Obviously Orange liner and On Display lipglass:)

I went to the special preview of this. I bought on display and personal taste glosses, notable blush and off the page shadow. Personal taste actually shows up nicely on my pigmented lips. I’m happy with all I purchased. I’m mad I didn’t have enough money for the photo realism quad. I also want the orange liner because the color is so unique. I think I will get two lipsticks, also. One of them will look great with personal taste. This collection has something for everyone.

I’m just not feeling this collection. It’s nice and all, but it’s not thrilling me! Of course, my wallet is happy, and whispering to me in dulcet tones… “now we can wait for Style Black…”

I like the Notoriety quad, it has all my favorite colors. I usually like to use brown and bronze shades for makeup. I think they are great colors for everyone.

Oooh, I’ve been waiting for this post lol. Sadly, I had much higher expectations for Notoriety… hoping Photo Realism is prettier. On Display is really beautiful and that fuschia liner has me drooling even though I have no clue what I’d ever do with a bright fuschia liner lol. Thanks for the swatches & thoughts Karen!

I can’t wait for Style Black, not this stuff. However, the lip liners looked really cool and in such fun shades.

I agree with you Karen, it’s a nice collection, but nothing wowed me. On Display lipglass is beautiful but I’m not feeling anything else.

    Yes, Karen, more please……….

I am so into Maira Kalman but somehow Crest the Wave doesn’t really catch my eyes as the Bright Future from Style Warrior did! May be when I see the real thing and swatch it, I might change my mind. And the quad palette is actually quite similar in colors to some of Stila’s eyeshadow quads, in my personal opinion, of course.

I think this is my favorite collection so far for ’09! I visited my MAC girl last week and she pulled out all the pretties from this collection… I was so giddy – giggling, clapping my hands, oohing and ahhing!

The quads are amazing and The Perfect Blush (I think that’s what it’s called) will be a perfect neutral blush for my NW20 self.

Can’t wait for the release – I plan to be banging down the doors at 10 am! 🙂

Looking forward to reading what you think about the rest of the collection. Happy Saturday!

On Display is sooo gorgeous but it’s too bad you really have to layer it on to get that gorgeous color to show up. Thanks for the swatches, they are great.

I’m in love with the piggies! I need more Heritage Rouge because I only have a sample of it.
First I was looking forward the quads but now I don’t think I’ll buy any of them…let’s see…
I looove the fuchsia tecnakhol, On display lipglass, Violet trance single eyeshadow…

    So many things hehe
