Wild Turkey Redux

October 6th, 2009 by Karen 19 Comments

You know you’ve moved out to the cut when you look out your living room window and see a gang of wild turkeys guarding the hillside.

Previous to yesterday the last (and only time) I ran into some Wild Turkey was during a really long night at the Red Room in San Francisco (RIP!) circa 1998.

The times are a changing …

Anyhoo, I’m starting to feel less guilty about keeping Tabs inside, because these birds were 1.) huge (I’m guessing at least three times the size of an overweight tabby cat with a low-hanging tummy) and 2.) looked like they meant business — like they’d chase you down and eff up your shins if you got in their mix.

Dang girl. Yeah, you’re better off keeping Sir Tabs inside until these fellas decide to take a hike (get it? haha… I’m cheesy…)!

      Hi Kim!

Ha, you know I love the cheese. 🙂

How are you doing? Is school going well?

Things on this end are okay. I’m starting to mentally recover from the move — it’s taken a lot out of me.

(I got your reply via email but our comments have gone AWOL on my end, it seems!)

School is going well; I like having night classes because I can still work but some days it takes a lot out of me. I was ready to sleep once I got home last night. I ate some lasagna like a feral child then hopped into the shower and immediately got into bed right after, lol.

The move will take some getting used to, but hopefully things shape up. Is everything bigger in the new place? What’s it like?

      Hi Kim,

Hmm, can you describe what you mean by AWOL? Can you not see them at all? What browser are you using?

Oh, and I think we may be living parallel food lives. I had a feral child moment last night with a Ceasar salad and a 30 Rock rerun. By the time I was done I was covered in parmesan cheese, chicken bits and lettuce … but I was too tired to shower so I crawled into bed and just passed out.

The new place is a little bigger. El Hub, Tabs and I were living in an ancient tin can of a one bedroom apartment (realtors would describe it as “cozy” and “quaint”), so I’d consider anything at this point an improvement.

      Kim —

Oh, I also wanted to ask — do you like your classes?

I’m using plain IE (version 8, perhaps? I forget what’s on this work computer lol.) and they appeared for a bit, then acted like this post had no comments at all. It may just be my cache or something strange with the temp files. I still get your comments via e-mail, so I know you’re replying and getting my replies in turn.

It’s strange how sometimes a feral child moment just crops up out of nowhere and you don’t even know until you’re covered in bits of your meal, haha.

I like one of my classes more than the other. We’re getting into some “not for the sensitive folks” type of murders and suicides. It’s interesting how some of the deaths happen (not in a creepy kind of way, just education-wise). The other class is straight-from-the-textbook teaching. It’s not my cup of tea, but I can understand why he ‘teaches’ that way — he’s an attorney and has other, more pressing, matters to worry about.

Sacre bleu! Those are some big turkeys. I’m sure even slightly overweight (she’s one pound over still) Zena would run away in fear. Zena is not a bird hunter; she is a rodent killer hunter.

I’m stuck at school working. What am I working on? My essay for Gender & Sexuality due on Thursday, of course. I feel like I’m in the 7th ring of School Hell–the Land of Essays. The 8th ring is probably midterms and the 9th ring is finals. I feel as if the essays are never going to end.

Maybe you should catch one for Thanksgiving, old school style. 🙂 Then again, wild turkey meat might be a little tougher than a frozen butterball. And who wants to do all that plucking?

I too think it’s a good idea to keep cats inside. Even without the presence of menacing wild turkeys, there are a lot of hazards out there for the little guy (and yes, “little” is a relative term). 🙂

There are wild turkeys where I live and they are scary and mean. I’m glad Tabs will be indoors from now on. I’ve seen wild turkeys keep people out of their office buildings and chase down cars….

I think it is cool that you have so many interesting wildlife around your house. In my city it is mainly squirrels, raccoons, skunks and coyotes, but it I go further east in to the interior towns closer to the mountains there are lots of bunnies and wild turkeys and etc. Is your new place just outside San Fransico? I am so bad with American geography!

How cool that you have guard turkeys at your new place!

It would be very demoralizing for Tabs to be chased by a turkey. I think the turkeys came by to remind you to keep him inside. Seriously, look at the glare on that one in the front. He’s like “I eat famous internet cats for breakfast!”

Hi Karen – I may have missed your writing about keeping Tabs in after move. I’ve had cats for like, always. I’ve always found that after a move, I keep them in for a week or two and then start letting them out with me. Before long, they have the lay of the land and know where home is and come and go as they please. And those turkeys? No match for a guy with the street cred of Tabs. 😉 My Mom-in-laws poodle chases the wild turkeys around their property everyday. Too funny.

How’s settling in going? I hope Tabs is adjusting well. If he gets sad, he can look out the window and fantasize about delicious roast turkey dinners…
