Are Your House Plants Pet Safe?

November 10th, 2009 by Karen 15 Comments

Since Tabs now lives indoors 24/7, I had to relocate a few of my house plants outside to the deck. Turns out several of the plants I own, like this Elephant Ear, are very poisonous for the kittehs.

Want to know if your house plants are pet safe? The ASPCA’s list of toxic and non-toxic plants is a good place to start.

That plant is scary!! Looks like Lilo thinks so, too. I thought it was fake at first :/

Hey chica – can’t remember if I commented on Tab’s new “indoor” only plan…have had cats all my life…when I’ve moved, I keep my kitties in for a few weeks and then start letting out a little at a time with me. Eventually , they are indoor/outdoor again. Lola, Tab’s long lost sister, would revolt if she couldn’t go outside. Although, in winter, she pretty much only goes outside to take care of bizness…then she is right back in to her spot by the fire. 😉 I know they say more safe to keep them inside, but in my opinion, it’s their nature to be outside.

I am pretty sure all my house plants are cat safe, but she is not really interested in houseplants. However, she loves grass picked from the garden and jasmine plants. She eat all the flowers off of one before. I think she likes the scent of the jasmine. Since she is still alive, it is a good bet that jasmine is kitty safe.

I was looking at the ornament of your plant and now I want to drink young coconut juice.

I used to have a Gardenia (I’m also crazy about fragrances with gardenia notes) but few months ago just died (my ex bf put too much water). I can say that was the only plant I ever took care of, although my mother has her house full of flowers and even 2 palm trees (like 1,5 m each).

Some plants are dangerous for cats but I don’t think that they care about those.
But on the other hand they like to eat some. My Sonya was always eating certain flowers. And I know that cats of my friends do the same.
The point is that cats are much smarter than we think they are 😉

Hee hee, when I saw the cropped photo on the header I thought it was an exotic drink! 😀

A lot of cats don’t have much interest in plant nibbling (especially on varieties like the elephant ear which don’t really dangle that enticingly), but better safe than sorry!

My *houseplants* aren’t safe from THE CAT. She loves to eat greens….everytime she escapes into the backyard (she is also a 24/7 indoor cat, but loves to try to get out with the dogs. Luckily we have a fenced yard) she goes straight for grass or plants and starts chowing down.

I haven’t had any house plants in years because of my cats. Even if they are safe, they tend to play with them or dig in the dirt, sigh.

      Hi Kelly,

I got a little nervous when I saw one of the leaves on another plant with nibble marks. I think Tabs had been using it as a salad bar. 🙁

I agree with Glossizard, I thought it was a Lilo inpsired drink from the cropped picture XD Is that Lilo’s permanent home or did you just place her there for the picture? Haha.

      Hi Stephie,

She lives there, along with her plastic surfboard and a few sand dollars I found on Ocean Beach. 🙂

Don’t laugh, but Lilo came from Baskin Robbins — she was the decoration on my 30th birthday cake, LOL!

What about buying those plants that were meant for cats to nibble on?
