Dolce & Gabbana Intense Nail Lacquers: Do They Stack Up to Chanel?

Today Lina of The Beauty Look Book vets a Chanel nail polish challenger and asks, “Are they up to the task?”

D&G-Nail-Polishes-final

If you love bold, richly pigmented colors for nails, then you will LOVE Dolce & Gabbana Intense Nail Lacquers.

They retail for $20 each (available in 15 total shades); the first one I purchased was Ruby — a rich metallic red — and I fell in love at first swipe. I tested it at the Beverly Hills Saks and got a full coverage result with just one coat.

Since then my collection has grown!

Right now I’m wearing the one called Red on my toes. This is Day 15, and it still hasn’t chipped, having the same full coverage as the day I walked out of the salon (top coat was Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat).

You’ll find them at select Saks Fifth Avenue Locations (New York and Beverly Hills) or online at saks.com.

Here are the ones I’ve accumulated along with pictures and descriptions:

Fuschia. I find this one oddly named since it’s more of a bright iridescent coral with complex shimmers, rather than a “fuschia.” Not your typical peachy shade, this one flashes a bit of silver and pink and coral making it very unique.

Fuschia-final

Rose. A bright rosy-pink with gold shimmer.

Rose-final

Red. A classic can’t-go-wrong deep red cream.

Red-final

Ruby. The name describes it all, a rich metallic ruby.

Ruby-final

Desert. A highly metallic shade with different variations of gold shimmer and silver sparkles that make it extremely complex.

Desert-final

Royal. Beautiful deep eggplant with subtle shimmer you can see in the light.

Royal-final

Stromboli: Black base with intense gold sparkles.

I’m a HUGE fan of Chanel Nail Polishes, and I think the D&G formula surpasses them by far… It won’t stop me from continuing to collect Chanel polishes, but now I definitely look forward to new shade releases from D&G.

$20 for a nail polish is indeed pricey, but you get a large bottle with plenty of product — to make it worth the purchase (if you love the shade). The fact that the formula lasts a long time without chipping is another plus.

My only rant — some of the older bottles I purchased came with larger brush tips which made them difficult to apply myself. D&G seems to be replacing the brushes in their newer bottles, which come with skinnier brushes that make them a lot easier to apply.

Online swatches can be hard to decipher, but the Dolce & Gabbana Makeup website has excellent swatches for these.

They seem pretty color accurate to what you actually get in the bottle. 🙂

I just tried Victoria’s Secret Beauty Rush nail polish in Red Hot (a very holiday red) and was surprised that it actually covered in one coat. I’m always searching for bold, richly pigmented nail polish hues, but I don’t think I’ll spend $20 on a bottle any time soon, so….. if anyone has any drugstore suggestions that offer opaque coverage in one coat, I’m all ears!

I have Stromboli, and it’s gorgeous! It could go with only one coat, it’s so pigmented. And it lasts a loooong time without chips and a very slight tip wear.
I have one of the bottles with the large, moppy brush, but once you’ve got how it works it’s just fine.
What I find strange is that here in Milan I paid 23 euros (!!!) for it at the D&G counter in a big department store. It’s cheaper for you in the US!! Lucky gals!!
