MAC Cult of Cherry: A Look at Some Lipsticks

August 8th, 2008 by Karen 39 Comments

G’morning, girls! 🙂 I had makeup dreams last night. I dreamt I was sitting on my bed, gloriously happy and surrounded by makeup. I was playing with MAC’s upcoming Cult of Cherry collection, probably because I thought about it so much yesterday.

The entire MAC Cult of Cherry collection will include these and 10 other lipsticks and glosses when it arrives on MAC counters later this month.

So Scarlet Amplified Lipstick ($14)

MAC’s product marketing describes the shade as a “clean grape burgundy.” On me it’s a cool 40’s-style red with a touch of purple. I think it’s one of the most stunning shades I’ve seen in a while. It makes me want to don fishnets and dance to Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy!

Jampacked Lipglass ($14)

Depending on the light, Jampacked ranges from a deep, rich purple to the softer violet in the picture above. It’s a gorgeous purple gloss with a hint of shimmer. The shimmer must be what makes it dance in the light.

Creme Cerise Lustre Lipstick ($14)

A pretty nude that looks tan on me.

Kirsch Mattene Lipstick ($14.50)

Deep, dark and moody, two coats of this burgundy matte left me with lips that my high school chola friends would have envied, but because the shade is so dark it’s also incredibly hard to apply. There’s no way in *hellz* I could wear it dark without a lip brush, lip liner and 20 extra minutes, but if I dot it directly onto my lips and blend it with my fingers, it leaves a light stain. If you want/need a vampire dark look (’cause you never know), then this is your shade.

America’s Best Dance Crew — Spoiler Alert!

Do NOT read past the break here unless you’re prepared to find out what happened on last night’s show. No joke.

Am I the only person completely shocked that Fanny Pack got booted off the show? I’m so bummed! Everything they did was always fun, clever and showed real creativity. People are suckers for all the fancy tricks done by crews like Super Crew. I’m not hatin’ on the breakers, but Fanny Pack was really special, creative and unique. I would love the chance to dance with them, or at least to have them dance around me. I could stand in the middle and shimmy. 🙂

Still lovin’ ya, Fanny Pack!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

omg I totally agree! I was so angry when they were eliminated I turned off the TV and stopped watching LOL. I thought the judges were totally leaning towards Fanny Pack.. but to be honest I think it should be Super Crew and Fanny Pack in the finals..hahah gosh that show got me all worked up last night. Mac has another collection out later this month? gosh.. do they have a sweatshop where people are just producing new collections 24/7? lol have a good friday karen!

OOH… I really like so scarlet and jampacked. So scarlet would be nice on me, but it’s probably too high maintenance for my day to day. Jampacked is pretty pretty though!

Ummm i’ve never watched the dance show. First I don’t watch a whole lot of TV, second when i do it’s usually weird stuff (according to folks who know me), third I’ve been too busy for tv… Things are going well though. Furniture shopping this weekend… 🙂

ummmm yes! I was really pissed and super surprised they kicked them off!! I would have loved a Super Crew vs. Fanny Pack…. but I guess thats for the Americas Best Dance Crew in my dreams. I just hope Super Crew wins now, I don’t like the other group.

Oh and the lipsticks are gorgeous. 🙂 I think you should do a whole face around the Kirsch Mattene!

I am *loving* the look of that Jampacked Lipgloss. Its such a pretty colour. Not that I need any more lipgloss, but I’ve come to realise that I makeup addiction isn’t about need…its all about the want!

Today was the last day of my week off and I spent it entirely in bed, other than to take a bath and make some lunch. i’ve just poured myself a glass of Rose wine to help me work out what to have for dinner and I plan on spending the evening in front of the TV.

I haven’t planned anything for this weekend. I’ve got a few boring chore-type things I need to do. Bit of cleaning, throwing out old magazines etc so when I go back to work on Monday I feel like life is in order. How about you? Any exciting plans?

    Hey Karen,

That red is AWESOME!! I can’t wait to see you do a full look with it 🙂

I’ve got on Jampacked today and I think I’m in love…

On a sadder note, I’m DEVASTATED that Fanny Pak got the boot! I thought all along that if Shane had anything to do with it, Super Crew would never leave. I’m sad to say that it might be true!! Fanny Pak were sassy, inventive, and always fun to watch. The finals next week just won’t be the same for me 🙁

Hmm..I am going to spend way too much money on this collection. I can see this already, lol. I actually really love Kirsch, I can see myself using it as a stain. I suck at applying super dark lipstick otherwise. I swear it ends up bleeding and running..and I just struggle. It’s sad, really 😛 I love the jampacked lip glass too. It’s super pretty. I can also see more uses for it than something like Kirsch.

    Hey Karen,

First off, you are rocking the So Scarlet lipstick, but you always make the red lipssticks look great! But, second, my God, as good as all of these are, how many collections does MAC really need?! Granted I say that as a soul tortured by their allure, but regardless!

I do like the whole line coresponding with cherry season, it’s too cute. I reread some old blog posts and am picking up “Dubonnet” next month/paycheck. I tried it on and it looks amazing. What’s a good blush to go along? I’m slowly heading over to the dark side of MAC obession with you. 😀 😀

    Hi Karen,

I read your blog frequently. I LOVE what you do!! All your reviews and swatches are awesome..

I had a question– how do you think So Scarlet compares with the other MAC reds– (Russian Red, Dubonnet, etc… ) Is it unique or can it be duped by one of those?

Oh, wow, So Scarlet is stunning! I sooooo don’t need another red, but this is so tempting. And I really love Kirsch! I’m super into the dark, velvety-matte lips at the moment, so this one’s right up my alley. Thanks for posting these, Karen!

Puffy was NOT amused by this week’s choice, not just because FP went home, but because I thought SC and FP would be in the top 2. Is it weird that I even shed a tear? >.>

I thought both those groups would be in the top 2, as well. SRC is good, but not truly great, you know?

    I felt a little teary, too…

    Hi Chess,

You’re welcome. That’s cool that you can rock the super dark lips! Do you rely on a certain lip liner for the look?

Kirsch is *very dark* … my lips aren’t very pigmented so it was challenging to get them throughly covered. I’m thinking that next time I try it I should either prep with a primer or fill in the lips with a dark pencil.

    Hi Sally,

So Scarlet is a burgundy red and Dubonnet is a brick red (has lots of brown in it). Both those shades are darker and richer than Russian Red, which is more tomato red.

Here’s a quick swatch of all three.

    Hi Elena,

Ha! I know — MAC seems to release a new collection every five minutes.

Oh, I love Dubonnet. It always makes me think of Dita von Teese! Because I love her so much, I like to pair it with her favorite blush, Mocha, a pink-plum matte. The color gives the cheeks a subtle flush which I think looks very 40s pinup girl when paired with Dubonnet. You can see it on my cheeks here.

    Hi Xtina,

A few hours, 3-4 depending on how much water I’m drinking from my water bottle or if I’m smacking gum. It’s a Lipglass so it’s very stick and long lasting.

    Hi Ethereal Prey,

It’s got a lot o’ purple on it in comparison to my other MAC shades, but it’s *really red* on my lips for some reason.

I hope it works for you!

    Hi Vanessa,

RIGHT? People are suckers for the groups with the stunts and tricks. I was really pissed off that the judges chose them, and El Hub and I starting wondering if it was rigged, because the judges clearly seemed to favor Fanny Pack.

    Hope you’re having a good weekend. 🙂

All through ABDC ‘I’ve been astonished by the talent but angry at the votes, as much as I adore soreal crew, I definitley don’t think they should’ve been in the finals… I seriously thought they were gonna save fanny pack after all their glroious comments, fanny pack did too – they didn’t see it coming so when super crew was safe, they started crying so bad cuz they really thought they were gonna make it. I think the judges favour super crew and would look bad if they eliminated them.

I’m just disappointed with this season altogether. I have tons of respect for Fanny Pack because of their originality. You didn’t know what to expect from each of their performances. My favorite of theirs was the one with the prom theme. I watched that 4 times straight on mtv.com. Haha! Now that they’re gone, I don’t really feel the need to watch the show anymore. I hope Super Crew wins. 😛
