MAC Longwear Lustre Puts the Long in Long Lasting Lipwear

August 12th, 2008 by Karen 39 Comments

Coco Lust lipstick topped with Sexy Sweet gloss

MAC Pro Longwear Lustre Lipcolour ($20) sure lives up to its name, homie. I’ve used two of the nine recently released duos — Coco Lust/Sexy Sweet and Pink Air/High Top — and even after two meals, four bottles of water and three sticks of Orbit gum (mint mojito, yum), the colors held strong!

Each Longwear Lustre Lipcolour comes with a lustre lipstick base coat on one end and a gloss top coat on the other. Although MAC says they were designed to be worn together, rules like those were meant to be broken. I plan to mix ’em up for even more flexibility.

Although I like the glosses (high shine and non-stick), I’m in love with the lipsticks. They’re thin and apply extremely well with the included doe-foot applicator. Worn alone they resemble other matte lipsticks, but the thin texture — feather light on the lips — doesn’t feel dry like so many other mattes do.

At $20, they’re more expensive than most MAC lipsticks and glosses, but I think they’re worth the price. A product that requires infrequent reapplication is a product built to last. Plus, by mixing and matching, you can create a variety of lip looks with these.

after how many hours does your lips start to feel dry? i’m kind of hesitant about longwear stuff because my lips get chapped easily but they’re sooo pretty, i can’t pass them up! which one to buy…

I’m not a fan of most longwear lipsticks, but I grabbed a few of these and so far I’m in love. (Although, weird as it sounds, I *like* re-applying lipstick/gloss/whatever throughout the day. 😉 ) So far my favorite is Red Reflection–it’s the most gorgeous shade of berry red on me. I also got Ripe and Ready, Boss Brown, and Red Flame. I like the Coco Lust on you, Karen–I swatched it on my hand and I wasn’t crazy about it, but now that I see it on you I might have to take another look. I’m contemplating getting more of these but will have to see how much $$ I’m gonna drop on the Cherry collection…ugh, MAC, you’re killing my bank account!

Wow, Coco Lust looks so great on you! My friend bought that one too & it looks equally fab on her. I didn’t get a chance to get any of these lippies the last time I went to MAC. My lips tend to be dry no matter what I do, so I’m worried the longwear part won’t work so well for me.

ZOMG, I think I should reconsider Coco Lust/Sexy Sweet now! That was the lip color used during my last MAC makeover – I thought it was too dark on me, but the lasting power was AMAZING. Plus it didn’t chap my lips one bit – and I should talk, since my lips get pretty dry often.

I’ve also got my eye on Alta Moda/ Hip Love, too.

I think I will have to check that one out, too! I am really liking these. Which ones are you going back for?

    Hi Tatiana,

For long wear products sometimes I’ll put a layer of lip balm underneath, wait a few minutes, blot, and then apply the product on top. It seems to help lessen the dryness.

    Hi Elle,

That’s totally not weird that you like to re-apply during the day… I like it too, especially if the wand/tube is pretty!

I will have to try Red Reflection, cause I like berry shades too!

    Hi Janelle,

Thanks! Hmm, you can always prep your lips with your fave lip balm underneath. I like to put on a thin layer of Clinique Superbalm, wait, blot and then apply the Lustre formula.

    Hi Meimei,

I know… I swear that stuff was on all day long. Just for fun I put a swatch on the back of my hand and it lasted through a ton of hand washings. I couldn’t believe it!

    Hi Gio,

Usually I am too, but these don’t feel that dry. Regular matte lipsticks are def. more drying!

I’m really cautious about these because longwear stuff tends to flake and dry my lips like crazy. Plus if my lips are chapped, these kind of lipsticks just kind of make them worse.

Wow Cocoa Lust and Pink Air each topped with their glosses look awesome! I’ll have to check this out in person and see which one’s I’d like to have. Your lips look nice and defined, did you use a liner before the lipsticks? If so, which one?

First, I just discovered your blog this week and I’m addicted already. Second, I LOVE the Coco lust. I am going shopping this week for a bottle! This color would work for fall or spring alike.

    Hi Dao,

Yeah, me too. These don’t seem to be drying, though. And if you wear ’em with a lip balm underneath they’re actually pretty comfy on the lips. 🙂

    Hi Okyanus,

These pics are without a liner. The doe foot applicator makes it *super* easy to get the color on. Since Coco Lust is so dark you have to go slowly if you go without a liner, but you can still do it. 🙂

I got this in the pink air and boss brown and actually really like them! Normally I’m not a longwear fan but I like using these and then even using different glosses over them. Have you checked out the Starflash collection? I’m totally loving it!

I have not gotten a chance to use my new Benefit goodies. I will this week though. Sometimes a girl has too much make up and can’t decide what to use so she goes back to an old favorite.
