Makeup Tips from Olympic Skater Johnny Weir

February 17th, 2010 by Karen 38 Comments

Isn’t the Winter Olympics cool? I’m a big fan of the figure skaters. All that grace and power on ice, and they do it with such panache, too. I, on the other hand, don’t. I’m a mess on skates. On a good day I’ll stand; on a great day I’ll move forward, but I don’t think I’ve ever stopped or turned without crashing into something.

Maybe I just need one of those sparkly, over-the-top costumes… That could be what I’m missing — spandex and sequins. 🙂

If you caught the men’s short competition last night, you probably saw three-time U.S. champion Johnny Weir tear it up on the ice. The boy’s one of the most entertaining (and downright sassy) skaters I’ve seen in a long time. Tabs doesn’t always support Johnny’s costume decisions, but he absolutely loved last night’s black spandex outfit with the pink tassel (at the top). Seriously, Johnny, two paws way up!

Not only does Johnny shine on skates, but he’s also a MAC fan and makeup maven. We traded emails before the games, and he was nice enough to share a few makeup tips.

What are your top three tricks to getting your skin looking flawless on camera?

1) Conceal everything you don’t want the world to notice, like blemishes or dark circles, with an amazing concealer like Cle de Peau or MAC concealers. 2) Blot away your shine and oil with MAC’s Blot Powder and Bronzing Powders. 3) Take care of your skin. If your skin feels beautiful and healthy, it will look beautiful and healthy.

What’s a makeup lesson you learned the hard way?

When I first started wearing makeup to perform I learned that you need to apply bronzer very evenly. You can’t go out with a mocha face, latte neck and custard ears. I saw a photo of myself and was horrified; needless to say, I never made that mistake again. For men, the important thing is to look like yourself but one hundred times better with the help of makeup… it defeats the purpose when everyone can see how much you’ve got caked on.

What are your three favorite MAC products to use before a performance?

MAC Blot Powder, MAC Bronzing Powder [and] MAC Tinted Lip Conditioner in Soothing Beige.

Thanks, Johnny, and good luck in the free skating event tomorrow! 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Of course! I used to figure skate as a kid and I love watching it now-sometimes I pretend that I would be that good if I hadn’t quit 😉

I like watching skiing, snowboarding and luge (got a thing for speed). During the summer games I’m into swimming (hello, hot dudes!) and gymnastics.

How long did you skate for?

Aw, I just saw the the lip conditioner contains almond oil. Would you happen to know something similar without almond oil, it’s a recent allergy I’ve developed and I was addicted to the tinted lip conditioner.

Karen, I’m squealing over the coolness of makeup tips from Johnny Weir!

His short program was awesome, and at dinner last night I was trying to explain to my (totally un-enthused, lol) father just how glorious Johnny’s corset-inspired costume really was.

I absolutely adore Johnny Weir — hie IS extremely sassy and sooo cute! Plus he can skate the pants off a lot of people.

Hes got this show on Sundance called Be Good Johnny Weir – the episodes I caught (its an 8 parter) were fun, funny and very, very good!

Love his tip on the bronzer and his description of his initial bronzing exploits – hello coffee and dessert references!!!

I heard about his show! I’m going to see if I can track it down… I bet he’s a natural on camera.

And I laughed when I read his line about bronzing gone wrong, too. 🙂

Ok, we’re officially dying! We couldn’t heart Johnny Weir more. Tyna and I were just saying last night that we thought he was robbed with his short program score.

How cool to get makeup tips from someone who always looks so flippin’ fabulous.

I love Johnny and his outfits are always so cute. I would love the chance to go and watch. They were definately good tips. Too much bronzer and makes for a bad day…. although i may go for something a little darker on the lips aand a little color on the cheek bones….lol

How cool that you got to exchange e-mails with the Lady Gaga of ice skating! The figure skating portion of the Winter Olympics amazes me the most because, like you, I am a frigid block of fear on skates. I can’t fathom how they can dance on it so elegantly, let alone do those crazy quad jumps.

Watching the Olympics (or any live shows) is what I miss the most about not having cable. I think some of the clips are on Hulu but it isn’t the same.

You can’t go out with a mocha face, latte neck and custard ears. – BEST QUOTE EVER!

SO. Jealous. Johnny is really fabulous, and that’s coming from a girl who never noticed figure skating before. His routine to “Poker Face” is beyond hot- the choreography, the costume, the makeup- perfection! I always imagine he’d be so much fun to style- I’d love to put him in head-to-toe outrageous Commes de Garcons and…rosy cheeks for some reason…ok, flight of fancy over.

I just found the most fab make up primer by L’oreal. It’s called studio secrets magic perfecting base. Also was wondering if anyone has tried the new tarte’ clay pot eyeliner, it’s supposed to be made from the clay from the amazon rain forest but i just have a hard time believing that something out there can work and stay on for as long as they say it can. If anyone has tried either product could you let me know how it has worked for you.
