MAC Give Me Liberty of London: Have You Ever Purchased a Limited Edition Product Based SOLELY on the Packaging?

MAC Give Me Liberty of London: bring on the cute compacts!

Ladies, who was it that said, “Give me Liberty, or give me Lunch”?

It must have been a girl after my own heart. 🙂 Since I wanted both today (Liberty AND Lunch), I checked out pics of the very prettily dressed MAC Liberty of London collection (arrives March 11) over lunch.

What do ya think of the white compacts (CUTE!)?

Maybe it was just the “mac” and cheese talking, but I got a little sentimental reminiscing about MAC packaging. They’ve done some great work over the years with the packaging of their limited edition collections.

MAC Give Me Liberty of London Beauty Powder in Summer Rose (a soft pinkish violet with pearl; $25)

Have you ever purchased a limited edition product based SOLELY on the packaging?

Remember the fun Fafi girls, Miss-Hello-Kitty-if-ya-nasty, le grande Dame Edna and bodacious Barbie (to name but a few)?

MAC Give Me Liberty of London Eyeshadow in Dame’s Desire (a frosty, mid-tone reddish purple; $14.50)

I’ve fallen for my fair share of MAC collections based on outward appearances. Of course, the products on the inside were important, too, but beautiful, provocative window dressing usually makes me covet/lust/buy more… Funny how that works! 😕

Left: MAC Give Me Liberty of London Lipstick in Ever Hip (a creamy light coral, $14); Right: MAC Give Me Liberty of London Lipglass Perennial High Style (a creamy bright pinkish coral; $14)

MAC Give Me Liberty of London Nail Lacquer in Blue India (a creamy dark greenish blue with pearl; $12)

MAC Give Me Liberty of London Scarf ($95)

Karen

One of these days you’ve gotta! Start with either an eyeshadow or Lipglass… they’re $14, which isn’t too bad. If you get a neutral color that you’d wear often then you can easily get your money’s worth. 🙂

I admit that I’m guilty of buying for the cute packaging more than once 😉 When Heatherette came out, I was guilty of this in many occasions. Ahem… 😉 But I love love love this collection design, the birds and flowers are too cute. I do want to get Peachstock!

I actually haven’t ever bought anything *solely* for the packaging, but that’s only because any time I’ve ever like the packaging that much, the colors inside have been just as appealing. I don’t know what I would buy something just for the packaging if I had no use for the colors inside. My one Fafi lipstick (whose packaging I love), is one of my favorite spring lipsticks, so you see where I’m going with this one.

Yeah, I loved Fafi too. If I really try, I can line up MAC collections with major milestones in my life. Ha! 😀 Actually, this one really, really appeals to me, but I think it may be because the packaging is probably the prettiest I’ve ever seen from any makeup collection, MAC or otherwise. The shades are pretty, but not my favorite from them right now. I can’t seem to keep up with their releases lately. I missed out on the spring one and now the Ombre Blush in Ripe Peach is sold out everywhere. 🙁

Shoot! For a while there it was still available online at Nordstrom… I checked Macy’s, Neimans and Bloomindale’s and no luck there, either.

If you’re really desperate maybe call your Nordstrom MAC counter and ask them if they can ship it from another store? They’ve done that for me in the past.

Karen, when I saw this comment just now I was like, “What the heck is CCO, and how can I find one?!” So I did some Googlin’ and the most helpful info was of course one of your old posts. Apparently there is one close to me in Camarillo and one in Ontario. Yay for discounted makeup! 😀

I’m definitely buying something from the back to the beach collection just because of the packaging…but that will be the first time I’ve decided that before seeing actual products. Innovative or cute packaging can push a maybe purchase into a yes.

I’ve never bought a product only for the packaging, I tend to buy something if I know I’ll be using it and I like it. Come to think of it, I do have a couple of items from Neo-Sci-Fi and I wanted at least something from HK for its cute packaging, so the outfit must really influence me, LOL! But the products I got are used quite a lot. But I think I’m going to go crazy with this collection 😀 Hopefully I’ll have a job by then, so I’ll be able to splurge!

Ooh, I have totally purchased things just for the packaging before. I bought the MAC for Hello Kitty Tahitian Sand beauty powder solely because I wanted the compact (and figured I’d switch it out for blot powder or something) but luckily I really love Tahitian Sand. I also bought one lipstick, Cute-ster, just for the packaging and the idea I could put other MAC lipsticks in it, but so far I haven’t switched anything out for it yet… I don’t wear my MAC lipsticks very often because they’re on the drying side of my collection (Laura Mercier Stickglosses FTW!).

I also bought the Tsumori Chisato for Shu Uemura highlighter, lipstick (actually two) and the compact mirror (I actually ordered this from Nordstrom’s for $25 total!!) solely because the packaging was absolutely adorable! I’m super happy with all the products though – they way exceeded my expectations. The highlighter is gorgeous and a very functional everyday shimmer, the lipsticks are actually the second nicest formula I own, and the compact mirror was so totally worth it. I carry it with me every day and it never fails to put a smile on my face. 😀

Weirdly, this collection’s packaging just isn’t doing it for me… but I do love that scarf!

On a side note, I’m convinced this scarf is just MAC trying to see how obscene they can be and still keep people buying 😉 First it was the MSFs at $33, then the tiny Viva Glam bags at $30, and now a $115 scarf! (CAD pricing, that is.) It’s like a very strange and fascinating social experiment… =D

I am still sad to this day that I missed the Barbie collection – I wasn’t a serious MAC collector then – I must have been in Stila mood at that time. What bad timing on my part – haha j/k. I did love fafi and luckily the Company Store nearby actually carries both Fafi palettes that I missed from the launch 2 yrs. ago. I’m just sad I didn’t get the teeshirt.
