MAC Unsung Heroes: Lychee Luxe Lipglass

April 12th, 2010 by Karen 64 Comments

Question for my coral lovin’ babes: Do you have a favorite coral lipgloss? Hands down, mine’s got to be MAC Lipglass in Lychee Luxe ($14). It’s a shimmery coral from MAC’s permanent line, and if I had to guess I’d bet I’ve gone through a double-digit number of tubes, yikes!

Wish I could say I stumbled upon Lychee Luxe on my own, but I actually heard about it from my mom. She gave me the heads-up about 10 years ago, which is funny to me because she’s never really been into makeup.

Proof positive that Lychee Luxe holds *great* magical powers. 🙂

One day she swung by a MAC counter looking for a gloss with just the right amount of color for her fabulous 50-ish self. She left with her first tube of Lychee Luxe, and a familial makeup obsession was born.

When it comes to coral glosses, I like to be able to see the color on my lips, but I don’t like so much pigment that it turns into a high maintenance mess (color on my teeth, chin, cheeks, etc.)!

Lychee Luxe is the coral lipgloss Goldilocks would have worn because it bears (ha!) a perfect amount of golden pinkish coral. It stands out, but I don’t have to check on it every 10 minutes throughout the day.

And, oooh! — the flexibility. It goes great with so many different eye makeup looks, like all of the seasonal golds, bronzes, coppers, teals and greens of summer.

Colors that play well with Lychee Luxe…

  • MAC Mahogany Lip Pencil ($13): Layered beneath Lychee Luxe, this reddish brown really ramps up the color’s intensity and drama
  • MAC Woodwinked Eyeshadow ($14.50): Pack this shimmery gold on your lid along with a thick black cat eyeliner for an elegant ensemble look with Luxe
  • NARS Orgasm Blush ($26): I love to wear this shimmery peachy pink with Lychee Luxe. The two complement each other nicely.

And it’s not all about summer, either. Lychee Luxe looks great year ’round, pairing beautifully with neutral eye makeup, black cat eyeliners and smokey brown shadows for school and/or work.

Another thing I love about it? Staying power. No joke, but I get about five solid hours of good color with it, and that includes my regular lip smacking and all of the water I drink throughout the day.

If MAC ever discontinued Lychee Luxe … heads would roll! Well, not really, but you better believe I’d start stockpiling. 🙂 I LOVE you, Luxe! Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A+

Do you Lychee Luxe? If you do, what do you like to wear it with?

Hark, is that blue…?

Whoa, I think it just stopped raining. Is that a patch of blue sky, I see?

Oh, well, it only lasted a minute, and now it’s gone, but I do feel a little better. It’s amazing how it only took a few seconds of sunshine to cheer me up! 🙂

How about you? Is your week off to a good start?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

There is this really nifty lady,
She says she is a crazy cat lady.

One day she whispered to my ear,
Her message I strained to hear.

Lychee Luxe is the bomb, was what she said,
I said I will buy it, of color I will not be afraid.

Two skips forward, and I hold in my hand,
What might be the prettiest gloss in all of the land.

Lychee Luxe, I do love you, that much is true.
To Karen, thank you for giving me the clue!!!

LOL … im goofin off at work. I do <3 Lychee Luxe!

This is a gorgeous color! Do you think it would work with lighter skin tones. I sometimes find that colourful lip glosses are too colourful for my skin tone…

Red Devil looks a lot like Lychee Luxe, only brighter and pinker 🙂 Unfortunately I don’t like how LL looks on me… I think it’s too orange. And I’m almost the same skintone as you, Karen, maybe a shade darker… Any other ideas how to wear it? I’m trying to love it because it’s so pretty! Would you know how Pink Lemonade compares to Lychee Luxe? 🙂

This gloss is $14, which is pretty affordable for a department store gloss. You don’t have to use a lot, either, so it should last you a long time.

I’ll have to definitely check this out. I have been avoiding MAC lipglasses for years after my experience with one about 10-12 years ago – way too sticky. I bought a lipglass from the CCO last weekend to try out and really liked it with lip balm underneath, so I have been looking into other MAC lipglasses. This will be the first one I look at purchasing! Thanks for the heads up about this!

Hopefully you’ll like the texture of Lychee Luxe. Let me know if you end up getting it.

Thanks, Babybubblz! I did a simple cat eye with LORAC Front of the Line Pro Liner on the upper lash line, MAC Technakohl in Graphblack to tightline and MAC Powersurge along the lower lash line. One the cheeks that’s MAC Ripe Peach Ombre Blush. That’s basically it…

      Hi Eileen,

Yah, the texture seems to be very polarizing. If you like non-sticky glosses, you might want to try Tarte’s or the Chanel Aqualumieres.

Lychee Luxe was also my first lipglass from MAC. It had a lot of gold shimmer, but was a lot brighter and slightly more orange on my lips than in the pictures that you’ve posted. I liked it so much that when I ran out of it, I was trying to look for a lipstick in the exact same colour. Back then, Fafi had just been released and Utterly Frivolous’ description matched Lychee Luxe and I was thinking score! The colour without the stickiness! (But the MAC noob I was… their descriptions rarely match their colours.) Utterly Frivolous was a bit too cool somehow, and even until now, I have half a tube of it left. It just takes a lot of effort to want to use it because it’s garish, and I’m somebody who’s not afraid of colour. And since I’ve gotten onto the LE train, I’ve been neglecting permanent items a lot. The thing is, I feel that with all the items MAC constantly deluges the world with, it’s really quite a pity to repeat using certain products cuz life is too short for that! I never have backups for anything except Port Red which I sincerely believe to be *the* red for me. But it doesn’t stop me from snapping up every LE red lipstick that they release 😀
