MAC to the Glitter Chunks in New Superglass Lipgloss: Supersize Me!

April 27th, 2010 by Karen 36 Comments

A lot of people don’t know this, but the lyrics to Parliament’s famous 1976 single, Give Up the Funk, originally went like this:

Ow, we want the chunk
Give up the chunk
Ow, we need the chunk
We gotta have that chunk [2x]

True story. 🙂

The bodacious bits of chunky glitter in the nine MAC Superglass shades ($18 each) are so big, eye-catching and IN YO FACE that they’re making me break into song (like so many things do!).

Why don’t you stick around?

I expected glitter chunks this big to make these glosses feel gritty, but the formula slides onto my lips. They’re sticky, though, despite how gracefully they glide. As a matter of fact, I think they may be a little stickier than MAC Lipglasses are, for what it’s worth.

As far as the rest of the senses go, they’re unflavored but have a light vanilla scent.

From left: Cherry Electric, Gift Wrap, Tunnel of Love

For layered lip looks, Superglass should work like a charm. I can see the medium pigmentation, dramatic shimmer and glassy shine really complementing staple lipsticks and lip pencils.

Wearing Gift Wrap

Some things to consider…

I’m not completely sold on the Superglass glitter… I prefer smaller, finer pieces of bling, and the uneven shapes and large sizes make it look messy to me (on the lips).

Travel trubs

And then there’s how the glitter likes to travel. I get about three hours of total wear time out of these glosses, but within about 30 minutes the glitter’s already begun to migrate outside the outline of my lips, with chunks pooling at the corners and outside my natural lip line. So not cute…

I don’t think I’ll rush to grab the Superglass glosses when they hit MAC counters on May 6, but hard core glitter gals are in for a treat. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B-

You might like MAC Superglass gloss if…

  • You’re all about eye-catching glitter with bling to spare
  • You don’t mind lipglosses with a thick, sticky texture
  • You like brush applicators and medium pigmentation
  • You don’t mind having to reapply often

I thought about skipping this collection entirely since I’ve heard mixed reviews about them being gritty and not gritty. I’m a huge dazzleglass fan and I prefer it over Superglass anytime.

I’m not crazy about the Dazzleglasses but I like them much more than these.

Have you ever tried the Chanel glosses with the glitters? Those are my faves!

Yeah this collection of glosses are a total pass for me. I have problems with Dazzlecreme glass so I can imagine the gloss migration on me with this one. No thanks!!

Ooh, you would probably not like this then. I end up with glitter all over the frickin’ place. I actually found some in my eyebrow (LOL!) and still have no idea how it got there.

Thanks for the heads-up on this one! I really am not a fan of chunky glitter on my lips – I always call it the “I ate a disco faerie” look. I’m more into the OG Lipglasses, though. 🙂

Those odd-sized glitter chunks seem like such a strange choice. I’m not sure that would have appealed to me even when I was younger! Gift Wrap is awfully pretty, though.

It’s a little weird. I mean, maybe if the glitter was consistently shaped and large I might’ve been able to get behind it.

You look great in Gift Wrap, but these are not calling my name. There really is such a thing as too much bling and these glosses have waaaay too much goin’ on, in my humble opinion. Really, the glitter is so large and visible (at least in the swatches), it reminds me of something a little kid playing dress-up would wear.

hmmm, could we get a closeup maybe?
Glitter seems really childish to me. Have yet to see anything to change my mind; definitely not this. I guess they tried to do something different, making the glitter irregular sizes. But i prefer shimmery goodness.
And I could totally see this stuff turning out gross if the glitter is going to be pooling in the corners of your mouth. :\

Ahhh, sad to hear about the migrating. I already have a problem with regular glosses doing this so I guess these are out of the question for me (like even with tokidoki Devil Girl!). The swatches (esp Cherry Electric) look sooooooo pretty though!

That glitter is too chunky for me. I think it would even get on my teeth at some point. I do like the colors minus the glam.

I got Sugar Overload. The chunks of glitter aren’t bad for a night out on the town. Its not something I’d wear everyday though because the glitter isn’t very work appropriate. Now of course, I’ve only gotten Sugar Overload, so the glitter migration wasn’t hugely noticeable on nude or pale pink lipstick that I’ve used it with. I know I’ll be getting a few more of them on launch day 🙂

Aw, sad to hear about the glitter migrating and the uneven chunks. I love the Dazzleglasses so I was looking forward to these ones (I’m in a huge girly glitter phase right now with my makeup, all about the pinks and purples and shiny and glitter, lol! I blame my three years in Japan and Korea; I’m suffering cute withdrawal, or something!). I may give it a shot in-store, but it looks like I’ll prob be sticking with Dazzleglass for shiny sparkly lips.

Well, I think I’ll pass on these. Migrating glitter chunks doesn’t sound too appealing, especially on my 40-something year old lips. I am not a huge fan of MAC lipglosses due to their sticky nature (I do have 2 lipglasses that I like when I wear Aquaphor underneath), so being stickier than lipglasses is not a good thing in my book. If I want blingy lips, I’ll stick to MAC Dazzleglasses. Thanks for the reveiw!

    Karen.
I tried Tunnel of Love by itself a few days ago, and it was AWFUL. it looked good for about 2 seconds, then the glitter traveled, looked chunky, and it was so hard to take off! Very disappointing.
I’m so glad you feel the same – I thought it was just me. Much as I like the Dazzleglasses, their glitter bothers me too, but these are ALOT worse.

    Thanks for an honest review!
