Save Money (and Precious Brain Power) with $3 Wet n Wild Color Icon Trio Eyeshadows

August 9th, 2010 by Karen 39 Comments

wet n wild color icon trio review

Wet n Wild’s been setting drugstore aisles on fire lately! If you liked their Icon Eyeshadow Singles (I thought they were the bee’s knees), take a look at these $3 Color Icon Eyeshadow Trios.

They’re available in six palettes of three matching shadows each — enough to use a different shade on the eyelid, in the crease and along your brow bone.

Because Wet n Wild did the color matching for us, these should help make tough mornings a little easier to bear.

I’ve been using two of the trios lately — Cool as a Cucumber and On Cloud Nine — and despite their diminutive size, I’m still finding a lot to love…

  • Highly pigmented: How do you like your eyeshadows? If you like yours rich and pigmented, you’re in luck. Just like the company’s Icon single sisters, these trios apply with hella pigmentation.
  • Smooth: These powders sure look and feel more expensive than $3. I’ll say that right now. It’s a refined, elegant look — again, not what I’d expect from $3. As a bonus, shadow fallout is kept to a minimum.
  • Wear me out: I’ve been getting about six hours of quality wear time from these (with no signs of creasing), even on my oily lids.

I think these shadows are great, but Wet n Wild could take ’em next level with a minor tweak. They’re not quite as easy to blend as the Icon Singles are (as far as I can tell), and I had to work my brushes back and forth a wee bit more than I would have liked to achieve seamless color. It’s a relatively minor quibble and one I’ll happily overlook on account of the price — basically a dollar per pan.

These $3 trios offer women (and dudes who love makeup) an affordable, color-coordinated fix — a complete eye look for less than $5 — and that means another big win for WNW. 🙂 Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A

You might like the Wet n Wild Color Icon Trios if…

  • You’ve been wanting to upgrade your eyeshadow collection but don’t want to spend a lot
  • You’re new to eyeshadow and/or don’t want to take the time to match colors
  • You like smooth, pigmented shadows with very little fallout

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Doubt it, I barely have the world’s smallest eye lids and every time I try any more complicated looks it doesn’t turn out too well, that’s why I like how these trios tell you what goes where, lol

I took these up today and put them back, cursing the drugstore for no longer having the buy 1 get 1 free, I’ll wait until WnW is buy 1 get 1 50% off.
    I love wet n wild,

Great post! I just thought Id drop by and say how much I love your blog! You do such a great job combining drugstore and high end makeup. I dont know if its possible but I would LOVE to see a review on Burberry’s new lipstick line. I keep seeing all the photos in their ads and in magazines and am really curious to know your opinion of them. The colors look soo lush. Have you ever tried them? any thoughts?
keep up the good work 🙂

      Hi Robin,

It’s very nice to meet you. 🙂 So glad you could come by and say hello.

There are lots of great things in the new Burberry makeup line. I did a review a while back along with some swatches and pics here:

I absolutely love these!! I have Sweet As Candy and Walking on Eggshells. I also have the Wet N Wild 3 matte and 3 shimmer palettes in Vanity, Lust, and Greed. I am taking my Wet N Wild palettes with me when I travel at the end of the month as they are all the colors I need 🙂

If WNW has stepped up their game this much, you have to wonder what the profit margin is on high-end shadow.

Nah, better not to think about it!

Karen, how could you *do* this to us?! I’m pretty sure my perception of the world was just shattered a wee bit — these look incredible for $3. Wet n Wild can be hard to find in my area, but I’ll be sure to search through the dark corners of our drugstores for these trios! 😉

P.S. Is it just me, or does that green shade look strikingly similar to Humid?

Gotta love good shadows for a cheap price! Spread the word, my friend! 😀

And that dark green does look like a slightly more yellow version of Humid. Good eye!

They came out w/ these 6 color palettes (Color Icon, I think?) that are pretty awesome. I got those and bring them with me when we travel so that in case anything happens, I dont risk damaging my precious MAC eyeshadows (obsessed, much Nina?) …

The color payoff is amazing and blending is such a breeze with those palettes and they cost 5 bucks apiece, I think.

I will def get these trios … 🙂

I am a lip gloss junkie and a few months ago I tried WNW’s gloss #587 and it was fantastic! Lovely color pigmentation, non-sticky, and long lasting…. but they discontinued it:-( I’ll definitely try the eyeshadows! Thanks for the post.

I bought a “Walking on Eggshells” trio about three weeks ago. They are awesome and very flattering, and I love the trio for an everyday easy look. I’ve worn it most days since purchasing.

The only drawback is that the eyelid pink color broke and shattered out very quickly. It was much softer than the other two colors. In fact, the crease color (brown), still has the word “crease” clearly visible.

I guess at this price, I can buy another, and just keep it wrapped in bubble wrap or something….
