Today I Got Malled, and I Liked It: A Mini Monday Swatchfest

September 20th, 2010 by Karen 48 Comments

Mall much?

She’s alive! ALIVE!

Barely.

What I anticipated would be a quick trip into the city today to renew my passport turned into an all-day affair. There I was, stuck in San Francisco without a laptop or a good camera (the horror!). That’s why I’ve been MIA, but I’m back now, holding my brand-spankin’ new passport above my head triumphantly.

Victory is mine!

While the gubment worked on my passport, I killed a couple hours at the mall.

Trish McEvoy The Power of Beauty Fall Collection

Do you know Trish (McEvoy)? I’m pretty new to her line, but I hear the vibe’s a lot like Bobbi Brown.

I stopped by a counter that had the new Power of Beauty Collection fall collection out, a small five-piece release with products described as “universally flattering.”

I love that phrase, even though I’m not entirely sure what it means. The universe is a big place, after all. 🙂 Are these shades the Borg could pull off? I mean seriously.

Check out the slim silhouette of the Beauty Emergency Card Eyeshadow Palette ($38). I could see myself throwing it in my makeup bag for last-minute weekend trips. The shadows look and feel soft (a powderpuff lens effect) and kinda remind me of pearls.

Another thing that caught my eye: Liquid Face Color ($32). I actually blurted out, “Ooh!” in the store when I saw the swatch on my hand. It’s a peachy golden cheek/lip tint, like a liquidy NARS Orgasm blush.

Eye Base Essentials ($25), Instant Eye Lift ($38), Liquid Face Color ($32), Instant Pick-Me-Up ($29)

Clarins Rouge Prodige

After spending a few minutes with Trish, I swung by Clarins to get a look at their new line of long-wearing lipsticks, Rouge Prodige ($24 each), designed for long-lasting color, shine and hydration.

And how cute is this palette (below)? It’s called Palette Prodige Face Blush & Tint ($35). I guess it would have been too easy to just call it “The Prodige Face Blush & Tint Palette.” Yeah, putting the word Palette at the front just makes it seem cooler. 🙂

See anything you like?

That short trip to the mall was the highlight of my very long day. What was yours? Any chills or thrills to report?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Isn’t it great, if not a little bit dangerous, to be close to a mall when you have to kill some time? That’s why I love having my auto repair shop across the parking lot from my closest mall!

Sounds like you saw some interesting stuff.

I’m still cracking up at the picture you posted of Tabs looking at the wild turkeys. When I worked in Marin, they used to hang out in our parking lot all the time. Sometimes I would drive into the driveway and have to wait, and wait, and wait, until they all crossed in front of my car.

Had a mellow day hanging out at home, playing with my latest MAC haul. Loving the eyeliners from the feline collection.

I had no idea Marin had wild turkeys until we moved to Novato (never saw then in Mill Valley).

Ooh, are you loving Signature Blue? 😀

I’m glad to hear you like Femme Metale liners. I hope they release full-sized liners in more colors!

Hi Karen, nice Timex watch! =) May i ask is that one of the watch that calculates your heart rate and calories burned? Been trying to find a good one hehe =D Oh and nice pics swatches too, that mall seems really high up! How many floors is it? I’d be scared to look down lol!

      Hi Connie,

I wish my watch did all those fancy things! It’s a basic Timex Ironman. It’s lightweight, waterproof and unobtrusive, and I rarely take it off. I like the electronic face and the fact that it has a timer.

Oh, and as for the mall, I think it’s six or maybe seven stories? It’s pretty high up.

I own Trish McEvoy’s book and she is a beauty pioneer! She was one of the early creators of makeup brushes (that I think she designed from paint brushes) and created the makeup planner system that allows you to organize your makeup into a makeup “binder”. I owned a couple of her items and the quality is fantastic.

Ahh for some reason I keep reading “Rouge Prodige” as “Rouge Poridge.” Nom!
I feel sad for myself sometimes, since moving to New Zealand I find it is seriously lacking in good malls :(((

As a kiwi ex-pat I have to tell you, get yourself to the city centre and don’t waste time with malls! I’d go out on the town rather than battle the mall any day! Which part on NZ are you in? Epsom in Aucks is pretty good for shopping and anywhere in the Wellington CBD is fine (and you can walk end-to-end over a day).

Ah the French. So many beautiful words; such a backwards sentence construction! 🙂

The first thing I noticed about both palettes is what I’m calling Pumpkin Orange. It makes me think of Fall. 🙂

This is a bit off topic, and I’m sorry if you’ve answered it before and I spaced, but did you prefer YSL’s Faux Cils to Lancome’s Hypnose? Not so much for length, but for tranny-thick lashes.

No, I don’t think I’m scent-sensitive. I definitely notice when something is scented, but haven’t been turned off by it yet. I’m pretty excited about trying Faux Cils! I think I spent more on this Sephora order than I’ve spent on make-up in the last 10 years. OK, that might be a slight exaggeration. 🙂

Hey, you didn’t ask me, but for what it’s worth, I’ve found Faux Cils (both the tube I bought and the baby tube I got as a sample) to be noticeably clumpier than Hypnose Drama :/

So jealous! I didn’t get to bed until after midnight (damn insomnia). To top it all off I think I slept walked last night. This morning I woke up to find my watch off and on my desk (I *never* take it off), and my contacts case is MIA. Yikes!

What kind of curry did you have? Yellow is my fave.

Yellow is my fave too! Last night though it was Japanese curry: we get these curry blocks from the Asian store. Its really easy to make with either beef, chicken or veggies (leftover veggie trays are awesome for this): just sautee the meat or veggies w/ some onion & garlic, add broth and the crushed up curry cubes. Simmer till done.

I got home and it was cooking already courtesy of the Hubs. 😛 It was weird how I was so tired last night and had half open eyes while reading. 😀

Uh oh @ sleeping late; and sleepwalkin! Take care … 🙂

This one doesn’t have the smudger on the end; it’s shaped kinda funny, like a long chopstick with a pointy end.

The smudger ones are the bomb.com, though. I have a few of those and they stay on FOREVER!

I love the look of the Clarins Palette Prodige. I may have to check that out. I am not that familiar with Trish, although I adore Bobbie. I was so excited when I heard that Sephora is going to start carrying Bobbie. Now if only they would carry MAC and Chanel – I could get all my makeup shopping done in one place!

Is the Liquid face Color kind of like Benetint, or thicker? It looks thicker. I am intrigued.

I want everything. There just isn’t enough money in the world. 🙂 Also, I miss malls. After moving to Montana with their tiny one-floor mall, from Minnesota (where I’d go to the Mall of America all the time), I’m going through mall withdrawal. And that rhymes, so you can see my predicament.

I really like Trish’s planners. They’re a great way to keep your make-up compact for travel or every day. I used only her petite planner for months in Europe, and it held eye shadow, liner, blush, bronzer, lip palette, and brushes in the back. You can save alot of space when you skip the compacts!

For school for four months in Italy. I’ve now got a medium sized planner for makeup at home, but the petite is fantastic for travel, and if you get powder versions of all your makeup (eye liner, foundation, blush, highlighter, etc.) you don’t have to worry about the liquids rules for flying. I really want that eyeshadow palette too. I’ve got a lip palette like that form yrs. ago, and it can fit in my wallet for a night out- tiny, but nice.
