Red Lips and Smokey Eyes at Macy’s Passport 2008

September 19th, 2008 by Karen 39 Comments

Last night at the Macy’s Passport fashion show in San Francisco, the makeup was all about 40s-inspired glamour. Dark lips, smokey eyes and brown, shimmery cheeks dominated the runway.

Source: San Francisco Chronicle

Today I tried to re-create a slightly toned down version of the look (sans flowing burgundy gown) using the Shu Uemura Duo Eye Shadow in Mystifier on my lids and in the crease, the Dior 5 Couleurs Palette in 569 Golds (the pale pink shade in the center of the palette) on the brow bone and MAC Eye Kohl in Smolder on the water line.

For help I looked up the basic smokey eye technique MAC Cosmetics VP of Makeup Artistry Gordon Epsinet described earlier this year.

    5-Step Smokey Eye

  1. Start with a dark pencil eyeliner like MAC Smolder, which blends beautifully with cream shadows and MAC paints as well, and apply lots of black pencil to the eye. Apply the pencil around the rim of the eye first, then blend it with a MAC 219 brush.

  2. Blend and smudge until it looks like a smokey black stain.

  3. Then, blend a dark brown eye shadow into the black liner to create a mix of browns and black. Blend the brown shadow over the black pencil stain.

  4. Next, using a MAC 224 brush (a soft, fluffy, tapered brush), blend a lighter eye shadow color into and above the dark brown layer.

  5. The final look should have the darkest colors at the lash line, and the colors should transition into lighter colors the farther away you get from the lash line.

For the dark red lip I used NARS Lip Pencil in Amazon and Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited Lipstick in Crimson Dazzle and once again followed Gordon’s advice.

The final look…

Passport was fun, but as usual it’s more about the entertainment than the clothes. Macy’s sponsors Passport to raise funds and awareness for HIV/AIDS. It’s never boring, with lots of dancing and costumes. It’s not your run-of-the-mill fashion show, more like fashion-tainment. They turn the runway into a stage. I did like some of the clothes by Calvin Klein, Ed Hardy, Levi’s and Ben Sherman.

Some consider San Francisco a notoriously unfashionable city. I think it’s just that people dress down a lot here, lots of casual attire. Khakis are practically black tie. I tried to play it safe with a black lace dress I’ve had for years, but apparently I wasn’t the only guest with the idea, lol!

The highlight of the night was bumping into San Francisco’s Mayor Gavin Newsom.

Dude, I was so not ready for Gavin’s jelly when I turned around and saw him. He’s almost too bootilicious in real life. He’s hella tall (I was wearing FOUR-INCH HEELS) and has oh-so-dreamy eye lashes. I’ve had a thing for him since he took office in 2003, hence my doe-in-headlights look.

This afternoon I just fooled around and hung out with the cat. How about you? Do anything fun today?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I love the San Francisco mayor! And I love how much the people of SF adore him, too. I was at the Pride Parade in June, and the crowd was going wild when he took the stage! He seemed like such a sweetheart… and quite the looker, too!

And you are rocking that dress way more than girlfriend with the mom-hair. 😉

    Hi Chess,

LOL, thanks girlie. Honestly that dress is hella old, and I only keep it around because I classic enough to hold up… I guess I ain’t the only one. 🙂

That’s fab you were here for Pride! A few years ago I covered the parade for a journalism class; I remember meeting lots of very kind and cool folks.

Funny thing is that I ordered it online from Nordstrom thinking that nobody else would do so within the general vicinity, ha ha ha!

    Hi Lilan,

So true. Gimme, gimme, carbs is the quote of my life.

I really didn’t do much this evening. I’ve been super burnt out from work, so on Fridays all I really want to do is veg. It’s nice, though.

Today I’m heading to SF for a wedding. Have a good Saturday!

    Hi Marisol,

You don’t need an invite — you can buy the tix on Ticketmaster. 🙂 It’s a charity event, too, so you can probably count it as a donation when it’s tax time.
