Concealer Comparison: MAC Select Moisture Cover and Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer

It’s a battle of epic proportions! Blogger Jessica pits two powerhouses of the beauty world together in today’s guest post. Dark circles better hide!

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t suffer from dark circles, yet I only recently discovered the wonders of a nice concealer. I’m an avid viewer of Pixiwoo on YouTube and noticed that both Sam and Nic use different products to deal with their under-eye circles. I purchased MAC Select Moisture Cover Concealer after watching one of Nic’s videos, and I instantly fell in love. Then, later, I found Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer, and now I love both of them so much that I decided to do a product comparison.

I began by taking a photo of myself not wearing any makeup. AHHHH! I know. Shameless. Well, I wanted you to be able to see the unevenness of my skin. I have pretty heavy dark circles that are very noticeable if I don’t wear concealer, and I also have large cheeks which cast a shadow on my dark circles, making them appear even worse!

I proceeded to do all of my makeup without using concealer. As you can see, I get quite dark near my tear ducts, and my cheeks, again, cast a nice shadow over my dark circles! 🙁

Makeup without concealer

Then, I put the two products on each of my eyes, Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer on the left and MAC Select Moisture Cover on the right.

Unblended concealer

After blending, I took several photos to show the differences. The left side is Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer in Sand, the right is MAC Select Moisture Cover in NW25. As you can see, the Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer covers a little bit better. It’s also a bit thicker in consistency, which I believe is why it conceals my circles so well. MAC Select is more of a liquid. Although the shades look really different before they’ve been blended, both of them actually blend quite well into my skin. I also like how they each reflect the light, and both of them have nice finishes.

The two blended concealers

I think the difference is the most obvious in this photo. The left eye (Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer) shows less of the purple/brown color that’s usually present in my under-eye circles. Unfortunately, the MAC Select Moisture Cover on the right side looks sad.

THE OVERALL WINNER: Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer in Sand!!! Although I originally believed it might settle into the fine lines under my eyes, it held up quite well. Creamy, easy to blend, smooth and good coverage — I would definitely repurchase this concealer again. 🙂

Mac’s Lipstick in Rebel! It’s so great! I first filled in my lips with Mac’s Lip Liner in Magenta! I love it!

I absolutely agree. Select Moisturecover (NW20) used to be my go-to undereye concealer until I found Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer (Sand). The Bobbi Brown just makes my dark circles disappear so much more effectively, and the finish is brightening, but natural. I feel like I’m using Photoshop on my skin or something every morning I use it!

Great review, Jessica! The only problem I had so far with the BB concealer was the price but if it works this well the, I am planning to try 🙂

You should also look into the Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Undercover Pot…if you can find a color that suits your skin. It only comes in three shades, but it works just as well and comes with a corrector as well! You can read more about it in my comparison post here: http://www.bellaliberte.com/2010/12/battle-of-brands-laura-mercier-vs-bobbi.html

        Hi Jessica-
Loved the review! I’m also a big fan of the Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage. Have you tried Cle de Peau? At almost 70 bucks, it was def a splurge, but that’s my go-to concealer right now with Laura Mercier a close second 🙂

No, I haven’t! Hum…might be out of my law school price range right now. However, that doesn’t mean it won’t be on my list in a few months! I will definitely have to check it out!!! Thanks for the tip!

The BB concealer is my favorite for undereye circles!! I would die if it was discontinued! I found it when I was in law school too… Which is conveniently where I also found my dark undereye circles. 🙂

Why is it that law school coincides with dark circles and gray hair? I found my first one last summer and I nearly flipped! Nooooo! I’m only 23!!! Oh, the law school gods are tough ones!!!

your mac concealer is a couple shades too dark, that might have effected whether it was as good or not

You know, I would agree if I hadn’t gotten color matched for it only two weeks prior to making that video. It’s entirely possible though that they gave me the wrong color. Either way, I think the coverage on the Bobbi Brown is much better. I still love my Mac Select Moisture Cover for a quick brightening effect, but I think the Bobbi Brown is better overall.

Thank you!!! I wouldn’t be preaching it if I didn’t think it worked! I really struggle with finding good concealers for my under eye circles! I hope this mini comparison helps a little bit!

I’ve never tried Select Moisture Cover but I’m currently using Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer and I really do love it! How’s the staying power for you though? The only thing that disappoints me is I feel like it disappears after about 4 to 5 hours. 🙁

Well, I actually use my Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer with the Pale Yellow Powder. I just happened to buy the kit, thinking that was the only way it came. I think the powder really helps set it. I also have really dry skin, so I don’t have a lot of problems wearing cream products on my skin. However, I would recommend trying setting it with some powder – either the Bobbi Brown Pale Yellow Powder, Benefit’s Powderflage, Bare Minerals Well Rested, Laura Mercier’s Secret Camouflage Powder, etc. I think it really helps your cream products last throughout the day. I have to say for me, Bobbi Brown Creamy concealer lasts for probably 6-7 hours. But then again, my skin type might be really different from yours. I suggest trying a powder to set it! I hope this helps!

Thank you! I have dry skin as well and I do set my concealer with a powder after I apply it. I use Youngblood’s Pressed Mineral Foundation and I’ve yet to try those powders you suggested. I didn’t get the one with the kit thinking that any powder would do but I guess I might’ve been wrong. And I’ve been wanting to try out Benefit’s Powderflage for the longest time!! I think it’s about time to. Or maybe I just have really high standards for concealer staying power since I’m always out of the house and never bring any makeup with me so I never do touch-ups. 😛
