What Are Your Impressions of the Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense Lipsticks?

Stand tall, my little lipstick soldiers! Paint the clouds with your awesomeness, and shower your pretty pigments down upon the planet like makeup Skittles!

I’ve been meaning to swatch the 10 Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense Lipsticks ($19) I received for placing in the Rouge Artist Contest, but I just keep chickening out, unable to bear the thought of disturbing them in their perfect little tubes.

And then it started raining here yesterday. And raining. And raining. And I thought, “Hmm… I remember those Rouge Artist Intense Lipsticks being awfully pretty and colorful.”

I’m kinda glad I waited to swatch these, because with all the rain today today I really needed a pick-me-up.

Available in a monstrously huge selection of 50 unscented, unflavored colors in matte, pearl and satin finishes, the pigmented, full-coverage Rouge Artist Intense Lipsticks are designed to drench puckers in pure, unadulterated color — opaque after just one swipe. They joined the Make Up For Ever permanent line last fall.

Seriously, 50 colors? With so many to choose from, Make Up For Ever created an an online tool to help you find colors that’ll work with your skin tone and hair color.

To promote the tool, MUFE’s giving away 10 lipsticks each and every day through December 22. See their Facebook page for full details.

Sometimes, like when you’re a lipstick, it’s good to be dense, and these are really, really dense, although the ones with satin and pearly finishes feel a little thinner on my lips than the mattes.

Oh my good lord D: Those are stunning! Plus, I love the sound of an unscented and unflavoured lipstick.

Hope the skies clear up soon for you, Karen 🙂

I feel the same way about the reds I have here. The differences are so nuanced, ya know? They’re still pretty though!

Do you think you might pick one up soon?

wow – I need to get my hands on 17 and 29 (which, by the way, looks awesome on you Karen!). some of these look sort of moisturizing – did you feel that on your lips?

      Hi Erica,

The satins and the pearls are pretty moisturizing. The matte ones — not so much!

    Number 12 looks gorgeous

I bought number 48 (deep dark burgundy) because I loved the colour, but I found the lipstick dried out on my lips badly, and the colour wore off quite unattractively. So I returned it and got Chanel Rouge Coco Rouge Noir instead and loved it instantly.

Oh man, this post reminded me how much I love the Rouge Artist’s.

I’ll be honest, I’m a lipstick snob. I like my lippies to come in lovely artistic packaging, and be made by a brand known for it’s luxery products such as Guerlain or Chanel.
So I almost turned up my nose at the Rouge Artists…but thought I’d give ’em a try just for kicks.
And I am in LOVE. My favourite lipstick formula second only to Illamasqua’s…some might find them drying, but I like the dense feel and vivid colour. So many lipsticks just seem to slip around too much and come off on everything. These are perfect. I recommend them to anyone who loves bold colour with long wear time!

Hey Karen, I’ve been lurking for a while and finally worked up the nerve to comment 🙂

I’m looking for a lipstick to use as a base for layering under my NARS lip glosses. I recently ordered NARS lipstick in Napoli, which was a slightly warm, natural looking pinky nude on me. My skin tone leans warm, but I’d like to have something to layer under my cooler lip glosses.

Do you think any of the MUFE lipsticks (or others you’d recommend) fiit that bill? I’d prefer no sparkle/glitter for flexibility with more glosses.

Your blog is extremely helpful and Tabs is just adorable, he makes me feel at home!

      Hi Kiya,

Yay! Glad you stopped by to say hello! 🙂

Have you considered using a lip liner? Nude lipsticks are cool for layering, but I find I get the best results when I use a neutral liner to line and fill beneath glosses (the thickness of the liner seems to help the gloss “stick” more on the lips). If you’re open to it let me know and I can jot down a few color recs. Otherwise, consider Mat 1 (pictured above) or NARS Tashkent, Tonkin or Bangkok:

Thanks a bunch! I’ll swatch those next time I’m at Sephora, and I’m definitely open to any lip pencil suggestions. The reasons I’ve recently been looking for a lipstick for layering are that I’d think a lipstick more moisturizing than a pencil (moved to Chicago, the cold is brutal!), I thought a lipstick I could also wear alone (more bang for my buck), and the amount of product in some lip pencils compared to their prices seem outrageous to me.

The NARS velvet matte lip pencils look interesting, do you know if those would be suitable?

I like number 28 and 29. At the first picture I thought 39 was the perfect lipstick, to see. But on the swatchpic the lipstick looks very thin and almost as if there is no pigment in it. I also like the redcolors but too bad I’m allergic to red pigment.

That is definitely a rainbow of (not) fruit flavor! I thought I was going to like the pearls best, but I might actually prefer the satins. Sometimes I love matte, but these made my lips feel dry just looking at them. Then again, everything is making my lips feel dry lately! 🙂 The colors are really pretty, though. And I really like the idea of the online matching to your skin tone tool. I’m going to check that out later!

i take it to mean that im not the only person this has happened too.

ugh i went to the mall at lunch – not a good idea. i just needed to get a pair of jeans from the gap for the hubs: there was no parking and i had no chance to stop @ panera for chai!

I have 32, 34 & 45 (which I bought by accident b/c I had seen a swatch of 44 online and liked it but thought it was 45 when I was in Sephora lol). I love them all, they take a bit of a push to get them on and I use a lip brush for precision but man are they pigmented! And my #45 “mistake” is just my favorite kind of red, I’m so glad I accidentally bought it. I really helps make my teeth look whiter when I wear it.

I love lipsticks but I barely use mine because I always feel too made up or they require up keep! If I’ve one NY resolution this year, it’ll be to wear my lipsticks more often. I’ve got a bunch of barely used tubes.

      Hi Dee,

I usually just do it from the tube (too lazy to bust out a brush most of the time), but if it’s a tricky color, like a dark red or berry, I’ll take out a brush. I go back and forth between MAC and D&C’s lip brushes, but Sonia Kashuk makes a retractable one that’s good if you’re on a budget:

Hey. I am looking for a long lasting very pigmented lipstick/lip gloss. I have dry lips so I can’t really wear matte finishes. What lipstick would you suggest. Would mufe intense lipsticks be better or Chanel Imperial Rouge Allure Laque? I like shades similar to 29, 28. Or would you please recommend other brands if you think they would give better pigmentation and at least 4-5 hours of wear?

Thanks for the wonderful review! These are my favorite lipsticks, but you are right, they do feel heavy on the lips. I like how they are moisturizing, extremely pigmented, long lasting, and have all the colors you need. I love #32 for a bright pink, #30 for a neutral pink, #23 for a nude lip, and #43 for that vibrant red.

Love these – many products have been ruined for me with their unpleasant scent/taste (NYX glosses, I’m looking at you *shake fist*), sheerness (I have rather pigmented lips), or both (NYX round lippies, anyone?).

I actually like the “dense”/heavy feel to them. It’s a welcome change from worrying if my lipstick is meandering past my lips or faded.
