Kissing You Again: The Benefit Ultra Shines Lipgloss Line Brings Back a Cult (and Personal) Fave

December 16th, 2010 by Karen 17 Comments

Do you hear that…? That whispery voice? It sounds like it’s saying, “Kiss you, Karen.”

“Kiss you, Karen.”

There! Did you hear it?

Soon-to-be-released Kiss You, a reformulated reincarnation of Benefit’s old Kiss Me gloss, has been calling my name for days, and who am I to deny a tube of glossy pigmented purple goodness?

The new version will be joining the Benefit Ultra Shines Lipgloss line for spring 2011.

Purple has long been one of my go-to lip colors when it comes to glosses because it’s a great alternative to pink (not to take anything away from pink, which you know I love).

Kiss Me/You and I go way back.

How far back? Well, it’s a long story…

  • Pre-2009 — Before 2009, Kiss You was known as Kiss Me, and it was part of Benefit’s The Gloss line. It was a clear fuchsia, not very pigmented, that I reached for whenever I wanted a just-kissed lip look. It quickly became a cult fave (and a favorite of mine) and underwent a name change, becoming Kiss You. Seriously, I could sing sonnets about that shade…or perhaps an ode.
  • Summer 2009 — Benefit discontinued The Gloss line and released a reformulated version of Kiss You in the new Lip Gloss line. Milkier and less pigmented, it was nothing like the original. Disappointed fans huddled in dark corners and held one another tightly while rocking back and forth and mumbling, “Safe place! Safe place!” Okay…so maybe that was just me.
  • Spring 2010 — The Lip Gloss line was joined by the smooth and shiny Ultra Shines. Among them, a shimmery, purplish pink called Wild Child, which looked/s a little like a slightly pinker version of the Summer 2009 Kiss You.
  • Today/Spring 2011 — Kiss You is reborn! Once again, it will grace Benefit counters, where I’ll be waiting with bells on, as one of three new-ish Ultra Shines for spring. 🙂

Why are they just new-ish? The other two shades joining Kiss You — Life on the A List (a light bubble gum pink) and Who Are You Wearing (a passion fruit pink) — are also repromotes blasting in from the past.

Is the new Kiss You anything like the O.G. Kiss You?

Well, it’s similar, but [INSERT BIG BREATHY SIGH] it isn’t an exact match. This version’s much more pigmented and shimmery.

In her new skin, Kiss You is still a great gloss. I like the slick Ultra Shines texture, moisturizing formula and four-hour wear time. The glosses in the line are unflavored, but they do have a raspberry Creamsicle scent, which I actually like.

So even though the new Kiss You doesn’t bring back the O.G. one, I still like it a lot. 🙂 I can see it now…I’m blowing a kiss to the cameras (well, I mean “my camera”) and wearing it with thick black cat eyeliner and a pretty pink blush.

Expect to see Kiss You and the other two new colors on Benefit counters this spring, and, beginning next week, at benefitcosmetics.com.

PRICE: $18
AVAILABILITY: Coming soon to Sephora, Ulta, Benefit boutiques, counters and benefitcosmetics.com

I own the benefit all you need is gloss set. those lip sponges just gently hug the lips. It feels great while applying.

Its hard to say how those sponges feel while applying it on the lips. It just hugs it while delivering the right amount of color.

Benefit hasn’t been on my radar until recently– for some reason I always passed by the Benefit counter, but I think I might have to give them a try! Your review of Bella Bamba recently got me excited! 🙂

I like the original Kiss You gloss better on you. 🙂

I’m excited they’re bringing back Who Are You Wearing? – one of my favorite lippie shades.

I so feel your pain 😉 The Gloss was a favourite of mine and when they discontinued it, I forgot to re-stock my to-go shade “corsage”. Still haven’t recovered from it…
But I have to say that both formulas look stunning on you, though the new one kinda better matches the colour of your shirt… 😀
Did you hear about any other releases? On the Benefit site, there’s a new shade “patootie” and it doesn’t ring any bells with me…

I think I like The Gloss better but maybe that’s just because I know purples wouldn’t be flattering at all on me. I even struggle with pinks looking decent. I guess I’m just a berry kind of girl. 🙂

Wild Child gloss is actually the first Benefit product I ever purchased! I’m not wild for some of their other stuff (I’m more of an Urban Decay gal) but I love the glosses. Never sticky and great sheer color for a gloss. I haven’t worn any purple glosses in a while, I will definitely have to check this one out once it hits Canada. 🙂

I love this! I have been looking for a great pink lipgloss for a while and these colors look great. Great pink gloss is so hard find – esp when you want to lovely pink lips not teenage pink lips. and I love benefit. great post
