What Were Your Best and Worst Beauty Experiences of the Week?

January 2nd, 2011 by Karen 40 Comments

My best…

I had a shockingly great hair week, which is weird considering all the rain we’ve been having. High humidity normally turns my ‘do into a frizzy mop, but lately all I’ve had to do is comb down my bangs after I shower and let my hair air dry. Badda-bing, badda-bang — bouncy waves and perfectly parted bangs. I think my cut has reached its sweet spot — that mythic stage at which it has grown out exactly enough in every imaginable way, and every strand falls precisely where it needs to be.

It’s perfect wash-and-wear hair. Practitioners of the tao de hair sometimes refer to this stage as “hair enlightenment”…and it only lasts for a few precious days each cut.

Okay, that was just crazy talk.

My worst…

I must have gotten food poisoning from my pizza on New Year’s Eve because when we got home after dinner I went to the temple in my bathroom and repeatedly prayed to the porcelain gods. It was over pretty quickly that night, and I didn’t think much of it until the next day when I noticed some little red spots beneath my eyes (!). I think they’re broken blood vessels (from the strain of heaving). 🙁

I sure hope they’re only temporary… Thank goodness for concealer, is all I gotta say.

What were your best and worst beauty experiences of the week? Please share yours in the comments.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. I hope you’re enjoying the last few hours of the official holiday season. Sleep well, and I’ll see you first thing tomorrow morning.

Hey Karen, if it makes you feel better, I met those gods too this weekend, but mine wasn’t from “food” poisoning if ya know what I mean … : /

Best: NYE makeup looked great. I wore MUFE Rouge Artist Intense #36 (fuchsia) and it looked amazing. I only say so because I’m very conscience of bright lipstick and can’t pull it of but this one was a winner. I also took a few tips a-la Angelina Jolie and pushed back my bangs and hair for a glam and effortless look. http://www.zimbio.com/pictures/TXprQincn8s/Tourist+Berlin+Premiere+Arrivals/t9gghv766Ev/Angelina+Jolie

Worst: Nothing too shabby, but found out that Living Proof Thickening Cream doesn’t work on thick flat hair- turns out you have to have fine hair. Oh well.

best: my skin is getting better! i still have a few stubborn blemishes but they’re getting smaller. hooray!

worst: the opposite of you, my hair. i’m more a hair person, meaning i’d rather go out with good hair/no makeup than with makeup/bad hair. but this week its just been exasperating me to no end. it hasn’t looked right all week!

Sorry to hear about your unexpected worship session, food poisoning is never any fun. 🙁

My best – Earlier in the week I coated my hair after washing with some frizz busting cream from Living Proof, put my hair in 2 braids & had lovely frizz-free “faux waves” that lasted 2 days. Talk about easy peasy!

My worst – I’ve been battling a dang cold for 2 weeks now and I’m constantly blowing my nose, which makes it red, dry and generally awful looking – although my beloved Aquaphor ointment is really helping.

SO NOT READY FOR THE WEEK TO BEGIN. :/

Hope you’re feeling better and glad it wasn’t worse! Those food bugs can get pretty bad!

Best: getting my moneys worth out of my CdP cream e/l. Absolutely loving it.

Worst: Trying all of my red powder blushes and feeling like nothing is clicking the way it should. Just one of those phases where nothing really looks right. C’est la vie.

Best AND Worst: Having my face threaded. Best because I needed it and I haven’t done it in two months, and worst because I haven’t done it in 2 months and it hurt like hell! But it’s worth it. 🙂

best: i’ve been having the best luck with my new fluidline in dark diversion from mac. i usually can’t do gel/cream eyeliners.
worst: i have recently developed this single white spot underneath my left eye. it’s not a zit, but it is raised. concealer can’t hide it. i’m sure it’s barely noticeable to others but to me it’s mount rushmore. in reality it’s very small but still bothersome. it doesn’t hurt… it’s just annoying to see every day.

Best: Got a very generous Macy’s gift certificate, so I decided to take the plunge and get my very first Chanel item: I got Chanel’s Ombres Perlees de Chanel Palette. Soooo loving this!

Worst: Ever since New Year’s Eve, I’ve had really puffy eyes. I’ve never had this problem before. I didn’t drink that night just stayed up later than usual. Hopefully this is a passing thing….

Awww, food poisoning is not the best way to ring in the new year, huh?

Best: hands and nails looking lovely due to fun manicure (China Glaze Little Drummer Boy with Revlon Galaxy) and a new HG product (Burt’s Bees Hand Salve). And finally taking the plunge and starting a blog. It’s something I’ve been contemplating for a long time. 🙂

Worst: winter weather is not playing nice with my skin. I must purchase a new moisturizer, pronto!

Hope you have a great week!

Best: having my hair colored (more like a maintenance thingy) into this reddish brown hue which i get lots of compliments from 🙂 plus my nyx bronzers are arriving in the mail soon! i was sold when i saw you wearing when leopard gets a tan ;p

Worst: i tan very easily and since i spent 2 weeks at the beach before 2010 ends in a tropical paradise, NONE of my foundations matches my skin tone now! though i must admit my collection is limited ~5. could it be an excuse to try chanel mat lumiere? maybe not, in case i “revert” back to my normal skin tone LOL

Best: My skin is clearing up! I’m pretty sure it’s because of my new face wash from Neutrogena.
Worst: My lips are really dry, I’ve been using lip balm nonstop.

Best: snatched the last Naked palette at Sephora. I was waiting for this moment since August!

Worse: my concealer is starting to set into the small wrinkles. I think it’s because my fingers are way too cold in the morning to blend it propperly.

P.S.: I totally understand your hair nirvana. And you should go back to the restaurant and fill in the complaint form, if not for you for those who will come later and maybe get poisoned too.

So sorry to hear about your food poisoning — that is the worst. Glad it seems to have resolved so quickly. And you aren’t crazy about the hair sweet spot. We all understood exactly what you meant!

Best: Chanel Ombres Perlees — My first Chanel palette and I’m totally loving the colors. Don’t love having to apply with my fingers as I have tried each brish I own and none of them can pick up the shadow. Weird.

Worst: I’m getting laser hair removal on my upper lip. I went for my second session and they increased the setting and it burned my skin. I had a series of small scabs. Luckily, they cleared up quickly but I was very happy to have a big meeting canceled and be able to stay home.

My best is my hair, too! I’ve started trying to shower the night before (after yoga) and it hasn’t been disastrous, so I count that as win.

My worst is my allergy attack this morning. I felt it coming on, but I couldn’t take Benadryl (in addition to my daily allergy medication) because I have work early today and Benadryl makes me oversleep. As a result, my eyes were so puffy I had trouble opening them, and the concealer and make up don’t apply as well, making the whole area pretty red and kind of painful. And I forgot to wear blush.

    But my hair looks ok?!

Aw, Karen, sorry to hear you were sick! What a way to ring in the new year. I’m sending you virtual hugs and ginger ale :).

My best beauty moments of the week: I had some crazy good hair days last week. I can only attribute them to the bi yearly Nigella treatment I’d gotten the week before. My hair looked healthy, shiny, and bouncy and garnered multiple compliments — and I didn’t do anything different!.

My worst beauty moment: I got a big red spot right on my face right next to my nose. I usually have pretty good skin, so God knows where that came from — stress, maybe? All I know is, I was not loving that visit from my adolescent beauty past :(.

Hope everyone is having a great New Year’s!
Best- On NYE I got a much needed haircut. My hair went from having split ends to now being void of frizz and looking great. I also got bangs again and I am loving them!
Worse- I have fine skin and pretty dark hair. I also have this awesome “mustachio” that grows on my upper lip that I try everything on. I have done waxing (very painful and leaves my skin red for hours) and creams. I just used a hair remover cream last week and the hair is already coming back 🙁

Best: I bought my very first red lipstick with help from my MAC MA :). I was always intimidated by reds because I have red hair and I thought it would clash, but I put on Viva Glam I and fell in love <3. I have never felt so confident!

Worst: I haven't had much time in the mornings recently so makeup has been quick and light, which is fine, except I really enjoy applying and experimenting with new looks.

Best: I found these really cool Sally Hansen Salon Effects Nail Polish Strips at Target and they work so well and are easy to put on. They’re supposed to last 10 days and they remind me of Minx but i’ve never tried them so i can’t compare. I bought one with flowers, think Katy Perry, and one with a lace effect. I’m wearing the flower one now and they’re so cute.

Worst: didn’t have one this week

Best: I got my first MAC lipstick!! I’m quite old to be a newbie… but I love it. (it’s Dubonnet)

Worst: I was in an “off-the-pill” period, my hormones went galloping and I broke up like mad. Luckily I’m back on the chemical wagon now!! phew.

(I always say that when I’m not on the pill I don’t need any other BC method, as I become unbangable… ;))

Happy New Year again, and tuna for Tabs!!

My best was winning a holiday tutorial contest on Specktra! I am so excited 🙂 🙂

My worst… hmm… even though my New Year’s Eve makeup was pretty, I went for false lashes and couldn’t get in the inner corners to stay glued down! I tried 3 or 4 times and finally gave up. It apparently wasn’t noticeable but I could sure feel it!

My best beauty experience is getting Atopalm. It’s really very moisturizing and last a long time. The dry skin under my nose is not normal again 🙂 Plus, It’s quite affordable, $30 for a big jar.
I can’t really think of a bad beauty experience… Maybe my hair, which has been quite flat and flimsy?

best – going makeup free for most of the week. i was off work most of last week and i went around with just brows on. i loved it – made my face feel so light and natural!

worst – my hair is at a weird length so it kinda flies away at weird places LOL!

Oh no, food poisoning is the worst! What an awful way to ring in the new year 🙁

Unfortunately, I did NOT have a beauty best this week. I’ve been sick, so my skin has blown up… still waiting for that mess to clear up. And I’ve had to redo my pedicure twice… first time, I had sheet marks the next morning, and the second, I got a dog fuzz trapped in my big toe nail.

Best: Going makeup free for a lot of this week, so my chin breakout is clearing up. I’ve also been using a new serum, so my skin is feeling really soft.
Worst: I broke a thumbnail reeeeeeally far down, so not only is it painful, I had to cut down the rest of my nails. They weren’t that long, but they were a PERFECT length and shape for me. My hair’s been freaking out, too. No matter how often/seldom I wash it, it’s greasy within 12 hours. Le sigh.

So sorry to hear you were ill, Karen! As miserable as uncontrollable hurling can be, I always try to look on the bright side by remembering I’ve probably lost at least one dress size by the time it’s over. Hope you’re feeling swell again!

My best & worst beauty moments actually involve the same product, weirdly enough; the Chanel Ombres Perlees palette for Spring, 2011. I was super excited to get my paws on it, because all the beauty blogs that reviewed it gave it such high marks. It is indeed gorgeous to look at, but the application of the product is funky and fraught with peril in my not-so-talented hands. I’m going to have to play with it before I pass final judgement, but I was all psyched to wear it yesterday and it didn’t look all that faboo. Tummy love to Tabs!

Best: I went to a barbershop for the first time in my life! My mom usually does my hair because she is a hairdresser and didn’t had time to do my hair. I’m so glad I went to the barber.. I let her cut off 30 centimetre from my hair! That’s a lot! But my hair looks more healthy than it have ever looked.
Worst: I think I’m allergic to a makeup primer I just got. The ingredients are not on the product so I don’t know what makes me break out. Not really as in pimples but more in red spots and a lot of dry-ness. My skin looks awefull right now.

Best: my hair too! On NYE I copied this beachy waves look http://www.hairthursday.com/archives/1285 and now I am hooked: I don’t want to straigthen my hair anymore. It takes less than ten minutes. And my hair-stylist also says volume is the new trend so 😉

Worst: on NYE I had little time to make up, so I simply packed gold glitter on my eyelids using false eyelash glue. It looked gorgeous for a night, but it was a pain to remove and I was left with random glitter sticked around my eyes for days X(
