Redken Real Control Overnight Hair Conditioner: Sleep Well

October 7th, 2008 by Karen 21 Comments

If your permed, damaged or color-treated hair hates hard work and refuses to behave, mark your calendar for next month’s release of Real Control Overnight Treat ($20), a new nighttime conditioning hair treatment from Redken.

Redken wants to help you to be as efficient as a Swiss watch, so they made Real Control work while you sleep, absorbing fast (limiting the amount of product that transfers to pillows and sheets) to condition and repair dry, chemically treated hair. Since I’m a fiend for multi-tasking, I had to give it a try. If I can get my beauty sleep on and condition my dry crow’s nest o’ hair while dreams of C. Bale flutter through my head, I am *so there.*

Why Overnight?

Overnight Treat contains Shea butter to smooth and control frizz along with proteins and ceramides to moisturize and repair. Redken claims that leaving it in while you sleep gives the product time to work and amplifies its conditioning powers by cutting down on exposure to environmental pollutants.

How to Use It

I’ve been a regular user of leave-in conditioners for years and often use them before bed, but this was the first of the products I’ve used that was specifically billed as an overnight treatment.

The bottle states that it should be applied to damp or dry hair before settling down to sleep and may be left in or rinsed out the following morning.

Texture and Scent

I’ve been applying it right after showers. In my hand, the product feels more like Lubriderm lotion than leave-in conditioner.

An amount the size of a silver dollar thoroughly coats my long-ish (past my shoulders), thick hair. The company claims it absorbs quickly, and I have to agree with them there. I only had to spend a minute or two to massage it into my hair.

Despite how thick the product feels in the palm of my hand, it doesn’t feel heavy once it has been worked into my hair, and I like the fragrance, too — like a light version of Bath and Body Works’ Sweet Pea lotion.

Visible Results

In the mornings after using Real Control my hair feels softer, looks smoother and seems more alive than the day before, and my hair does not look weighed down at all. Untreated, my hair tends to look and feel dry and rough, not smooth at all, and I tend to get split ends, but using Overnight Treat for a little more than a week has improved the condition of my hair in each of those areas.

Long Hair? Make a Bottle Last Three Months

To get as much bang for my buck from the product, I’ve been using it just once or twice a week, even though Redken says it’s safe to use every night. A couple treatments per week still keeps my hair soft without burning through the small 3.4 oz bottle too quickly. If your hair is shorter than mine, you can make your bottle last even longer.

These Boots Were Made For Walking

My late night BOOT LUST has kicked in to coincide with the end of summer, and I found these brown cuties by Gabriella Rocha on Zappos last night!

Yeah, they’re a bit Robin Hood, but I like the round toe and criss cross design. I didn’t get them, but I was hella tempted.

Whatcha wearing on your feet today?

I just bought some Redken hairspray and it smells so awful. It literally makes me gag when I spray it on. This sounds strange, but the smell is spicy. I don’t know how else to describe it. Although this sounds like it smells really nice. I can’t believe how expensive it is for a bottle that tiny (I’m so cheap!).

I love those boots. I’d definitely be tempted to get them too, but I wouldn’t really have many places to wear them. Right now I have on my Nikes, I just had a tennis lesson though.

Those boots are cute. I’m wearing Converse, but I have a serious boot addiction that needs to be treated! I recently splurged for the Steve Madden Reins boots in distressed leather. Great boots but the zipper broke the first day I wore them! So now they are being repaired – the store is paying, but still I expect better quality!

By the way I recieved my book I won from your contest Karen, thank you so much it really brightened my day!

Today on my feet? Cheap tennis shoes. I rarely wore tennis shoes once upon a time, I’m definately a boots gal, but ever since college I’ve made the switch.

Ogh, MABB, where were you when I used to bleach my hair!?

    Hi Brittany,

I know! I wish the bottle was a bit bigger.

Dude, I’m so jealous that you can play tennis. I can’t play sports with fast moving projectiles!

    Hi Cloudburst,

*Yay!* I am so glad that you received it safely. I really do hope you enjoy it. 🙂

Grrr, that’s crap that the zipper broke on the first day! BTW, I used to have a serious Converse addiction when I was in college. Now I have one sad pair of Adidas Shell Toes that should’ve been put to sleep a few years ago… I just can’t give them up because they are so comfy!

    Hi YadiQ,

I got your picture of Diva! She is so sassy! When I get home tonight I’m going to show her pic to Tabs. He usually likes to sit with me while I’m typing so at least he’ll have something to cute to look on the screen!

    Hi Almira,

Girrrrl… I hear you on the bleached hair thing. I used to rock the J.Lo hair and my mane was drier than a good martini!

It’s sunny here today so I’m wearing sandals!

    Hi Marisol,

Me too! I go back and forth between scents, but Sweet Pea is one I always go back to. I think I’m going to spritz some body spray right now…

It’s a black and white baby doll with a white ribbon bow right underneath the bust area. It’s covered with gauze-y netting type stuff. 🙂 Vurry purdy, I got the shoes on sale at DSW 🙂

    Hi Tania,

How cute do your peep toe MJ’s sound! Aww! It’s a big plus that they are comfy, too.

Have you ever tried their All Soft line? I rocked that 24/7 a few years ago.

    Hi Xtina,

It sounds really pretty! Plus, it sounds classic enough that you’ll be able to use it again for parties and stuff in the future.

I like wearing baby doll silhouettes to parties because then I can eat without busting out of my outfit, ha!
