Get Naked for Less with the NYX Nude on Nude Palette

March 1st, 2011 by Karen 68 Comments

nyx nude on nude palette

Remember a few years ago when it seemed like every other day a different celebrity would get caught accidentally flashing her goodies on camera? It usually happened while they were stepping out of a limo, falling from a barstool or slipping off of a couch in the club.

Now, I seriously doubt that L. Lo, Brit-Brit, or P. Hilt have had anything to do with the nude/neutral/naked eyeshadow palettes that have arrived on makeup counters lately, but it still makes me wonder: is this a case of life imitating art, or just another strange makeup coincidence? 🙂

Either way, I’m not complaining. I’ll gladly take another palette of good old-fashioned wearable nudes and neutrals any day of the week.

Buzz has been building for the latest one in the limelight, the NYX Nude on Nude Eyeshadow and Lip Palette for spring ($25). Some are calling it a dupe for Urban Decay’s more expensive Naked Palette ($48).

This isn’t the first skinny dip for NYX, aka their first naked rodeo (NOTE: I’ve waited my entire life to type the words, “naked rodeo”). NYX released a much smaller version of the Nude on Nude Palette last year with fewer shadows (nine versus 20) and lip colors (two versus 10), and I think that first palette, with its warm, rich bronzes and orangey browns, bore a stronger resemblance to Urban Decay’s Naked than this newer one does. It wasn’t an exact dupe, but it shared a similar vibe.

This year’s Nude On Nude is a naked beast! With 20 shadows (many of which lean cool) and 10 lip colors to choose from, it contains a much wider selection of colors than UD’s Naked at a much lower price.

I’ve had good luck with NYX eyeshadows in the past. They’ve apply with loads of color and last a super long time on my eyes, particularly when paired with a good primer, and these Nude on Nude shades perform up to par. The eyeshadows don’t feel quite as finely milled as Urban Decay’s, however, and the colors aren’t quite as rich, but these are pretty tough to beat, considering the price.

As for the lip products, I think they’re just okay. I wouldn’t wax philosophic about them, but they’re not bad at all. They have a vaguely fruity/rosy scent (which I don’t mind) and feel non-sticky on my lips.

All in all, I like this palette a lot. It probably won’t revolutionize the makeup world as we know it, but you get 30 wearable products with it for 83 cents each. Hot damn! Oh, and Tabs hearts it, too. Yup, it’s also cruelty free.

PRICE: $25

If I don’t enter Ben McKenzie rehab…

…I’ll need a Ben McKenzie intervention soon. I’ve been googling him lately (I know that sounds gross, LOL!). Did you know that homeboy played high school football with New Orleans Saints Quarterback (and hottie!) Drew Brees? And that his mum worked as a news reporter? And that he has two brothers? And that I’m totally obsessed?

I’m hoping he comes out with a celebrity fragrance so I can track him down like a freaky beauty stalker and smell him.

Anywho! I hope you had a spectacular day today. Onward to Wednesday…

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Kinda random, but if you’re a fan of Dancing With the Stars, Dove is hosting a challenge where you can enter to win a Dancing With the Stars “experience.” Translation: you’ll get to dance in a Dove commercial that will air during the DWTS season finale.

The contest is open for entries through March 26, and you can enter by submitting a 60-second video in which you share why you’re ready for your close-up opportunity.

Good luck, you dancing machine, you! 🙂

Great review as always Karen! I’ve been wanting this palette for a while though the lipgloss set looks so tacky!

It’s kind of miraculous that you got all those swatches on your arm. I have trouble with just ten.

I prefer the UD Naked palette but I think it’s great that NYX has released a cheap dupe for it. This is a great set for those that love nude shades and it’s great value for money too.

I really wish NXY Cosmetics are readily available here. They were available for a while with the prices marked up really high, but the store didn’t appreciate the products and everywhere was a mess.

That being said, I don’t have the Naked Palette but this one looks really desirable to own, at a cheaper price 🙂

That is a lot of nude packed into a surprisingly small case. Some of the lighter, more matte colors look a bit chalky to me but, hey, for the price, there’s a lot to love, as you say.

    LOL naked rodeo

It looks pretty, but some of it leans a little too cool for me. Also, it may just be bad luck in choosing a few less than stellar shades, but I’ve had some fall out problems with NYX shadows I’ve purchased.

Those two reddish lip glosses look really pretty, though! This makes me want to buy more of the Black Label lipsticks, which are of good enough quality to rival lipsticks that cost three times as much. It may be shopping time…:D

I’m in love with the NYX palettes. If they were readily available at a store nearby and I didn’t have to buy them online then I’d spend way too much money on them. With this new mega set of nudes I may have to go on a mission and try to hunt them down or just give in and try to buy them online.

Quick question– where is the NYX palette made? China? After some of the problems with some of the products coming out of China with ingredients in them that they are not supposed to have, I have become very conscious of where my makeup is manufactured. I have noticed that some companies that normally make their products in the US or Canada go to China for the large, cheaper palettes– like Tarte, Stilla….

I might buy this since it’s on sale on Hautelook for $15 instead of the retail $25 for my friend who wants the Naked / Naked2 (which I own) because her birthday is coming up but I wanted to give her a whole basket filled with inexpensive yet great make up products instead of just one palette. This might be tossed in there. :).
