Picking the Perfect Urban Decay Baked Bronzer

April 7th, 2011 by Karen 57 Comments

urban decay baked bronzer

Urban Decay’s three new Baked Bronzers for Face and Body ($26 each) probably won’t satisfy the Oompa-Loompas or Snookies of the world. Able to be worn wet or dry on the face, eyes, lips and body, the faux tan these powder bronzers bring doesn’t look as orange that.

But if you’re interested yet unsure which Baked Bronzer to snag, Urban Decay International Makeup Artist Eric Jimenez suggests following these steps:

1. Decide on a level of color and coverage

These Baked Bronzers come in three different levels of color. The lightest is Gilded, Baked is the medium, and Toasted is the darkest shade. Each also varies in terms of coverage, with Gilded offering the least, and Toasted delivering more of a full-coverage look.

2. Do you want to shimmer or matte?

If you plan to wear them on your face, Eric suggests going with the finish that best suits the condition of your skin. If you have great, practically flawless skin, consider either Gilded, which has a shimmery golden finish, or Baked, which has a shimmery silver finish. (NOTE: The “veins” of shimmer in these new Baked Bronzers are not spray overlays; they penetrate all the way through the entire pan 🙂 ).

Since shimmers tend to emphasize things like fine lines, pore size and oily skin, if you’re dealing with bothersome skin issues, Eric recommends Toasted, which has a more forgiving matte finish.

Got a blush brush?

You may want to track down a blush brush to apply these (or other) bronzers if you don’t have one yet.

Although there are lots of different bronzer brush options, like kabukis, powder brushes, etc., the contours and angles of a blush brush allow you to more precisely define the hollows and curves of the face.

Find these Baked Bronzers sunning themselves on Sephora, Ulta and select Macy’s shelves soon (and also online).

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I’ve heard the Bourjois was pretty good. Remember when you could find the line at Sephora?

judging on swatches alone, i think baked would look the best on me, it’s absolutely lovely!

although i’m afraid it’s still much too dark even when applied with a light hand. i’d love to see what these would look like on paler skin.

Nikolai is the name I use when booking reservations at exclusive restaurants and clubs… I throw on a Russian accent (apparently, it’s pretty good. Most of the Russians in Moscow thought I was native haha) and flash my visa at the door. Worked every time so far 😉

I have very fair skin but also not perfect. While I generally prefer a matte bronzer I think toasted might be to dark on my NW15 face! I unfortunately think I’m going to have to pass this by for that reason.

Random question, but kind of related to bronzers: do you have any favorite sunless tanners for the body? I like Jergens’ natural Glow lotion, but the smell really gets to me.

Gals, can you recommend a good sunless tanning product for Shannon?

These are so pretty but I know they won’t work for me. I have yet to find a bronzer that doesn’t look like I rubbed dirt on my cheeks. There are benefits to being pale, but not being able to wear bronzer isn’t one of them!

Interesting that one won’t necessarily get the shade based on their skin tone but their skin type. That being said, I think Baked would be too dark for me (but I like the matte finish).

Question – Does Sephora have a friends and family event, and do you know when it is? There are some things that were not available this week at Ulta during their event, that I am hoping to pick up soon at Sephora if they have a friends and family event, and if they do…do I have to be part of a rewards program or on their email list or anything?

      Hi Melissa,

It usually happens in the fall in late October. I don’t think you have to be part of a rewards program. All you need is your coupon code.

Ok! Great! Well then it looks like I am taking advantage of Ulta’s FF right now and picking me up the Naked Palette by UD…I just had a friend tell me that they don’t like UD’s eyeshadows, but I have heard so much good about it. And I have dark brown eyes that neutrals love! This palette is just so pretty! (Although I also want to buy the Feminie Palette too…:/)

Well…I went and got the palette…LOVE IT! I just need some help with the right color combinations! 🙂 Darker colors really help bring my eyes out, the lighter colors don’t really work too well….any suggestions from anyone would be great! 🙂 what colors work well for you, where to put them, and all that jazz!

Are these the same as the bronzers they have out now, but in new packaging, or have they reformulated them? I haven’t tried the older ones, so it’s not like I can compare them, but I was just curious.
