Mystery Melon

July 31st, 2011 by Karen 14 Comments

A mystery melon from the farmers’ market.

Got any clue what it is and what to do with it?

hahaha I didnt know they sold those in CA!
We have those melons in Korea, and they are called “Cham-hweh”s.
Make sure you eat it cold…You don’t want to eat the skin, so cut that off, then just slice it open.
There are webs of seeds in there (kind of like a pumpkin), but it’s the sweetest part of the fruit!
It should taste like a sweet melon, with a touch of cucumber… tasty 🙂

Ahh, good to know! I can’t wait to bust it open. How do you know when it’s ripe?

It should be ripe as is. Just cut off the rind and enjoy the meat inside!

I think my mom smells the ends; the fruit should smell sweet- If it gets soft, then its over-ripe! It’s supposed to be a crisp fruit 🙂

ha I never knew the name of them in spite of having eaten more than I could recall. They’re awesome and cheap this time of year at the Korean market. Like any melon, it takes a little practice to figure out when they’re perfectly ripe, and I’m no expert there.

I think that’s a canary melon! Looks ripe to me, if it is.

Hehe, these are Korean melons! I have them a lot. Devour them like you would a cantaloupe, it is VERY sweet.

Korean melons! They’re really good and sweet. Like Chloe said, they taste great cold (but then again, all fruit does). Don’t eat the rind. I usually remove the seeds but the center is the sweetest.

Oh, and when ripe, according to Wikipedia, the rind should feel slightly waxy. I usually let it sit for a few days until it seems “ripe.”

It’s a korean melon!!!! Just peel and cut 🙂 It’s not as sweet and juicy as the other melons out there but they’re delicious!

My dad purchased one a few months ago at a local grocery store and they called it a Crenshaw melon. Super sweet, it does remind me of the melons I ate as a child in Korea.
