Clinique Kissable Six Lipgloss Wands: They Plump, They Really Do

November 9th, 2008 by Karen 14 Comments

Dual Tip Wands from top to bottom: Luscious Lilac/ Double Plum, Strawberry Burst/ Peppermint Patty and Blackberry Bloom/ Pink Champagne

Hey, so how do lip plumpers work? I didn’t know, so I did some digging this afternoon.

Lip plumpers are supposed to give lips a full, plump look. Some of them contain mentholatum (think Ben Gay). The tingling causes blood to rush to the lips, aka making them plump.

Other times the plumping agent comes from peppermint or capsicum plants — basically peppers, again, that trigger inflammation in the lips, causing blood to plump ’em up.

I haven’t had much luck with plumping glosses. They either feel like bees stinging my lips or just generally don’t work well or look good at all. But these Clinique Full Potential Lips Plump and Shine lipglosses get a big kiss. Not only are they allergy tested and pain- and fragrance-free (yea!), but I swear they actually work.

Score all six Full Potential Lip Shades this holiday season in a single swoop with the Clinique Kissable Six lipgloss set ($35, available December). The limited edition set comes with three dual tipped lipgloss wands (effectively two for one) in a cute silver trimmed zipper pouch.

Each of the six sheer shades feels thick and moisturizing and has a light minty taste. Yes, they’re sticky, but wear time seems a little better than average for a gloss, lasting about three hours between applications.

As for their plumpability … plumposity … plumping potential … the effect isn’t dramatic, but I can see a difference in the mirror. My lips do look a little plumper than usual, at least I think they do. It must be due to the capsicum, peppermint AND menthoxypropanediol (a synthetic menthol) these glosses contain.

The Clinique Kissable Six

Luscious Lilac: shimmery light purple
Double Plum: shimmery plum
Blackberry Bloom: shimmery berry
Pink Champagne: shimmer pink with golden pearl
Strawberry Burst: shimmery red
Peppermint Patty: shimmery white

Price: $35
Use: To gently plump and add sheer color to lips
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A

Even though there isn’t much variety among the shades (because they’re so sheer), I think they’d make nice stocking stuffers for a friend. And six shades for $35 isn’t a bad deal.

If you’re fickle about your lipgloss colors like I am, the dual tip wands give you options. I really like the Pink Champagne/ Blackberry Bloom combo. It’s always good to have options!

Karen

I want to love these, but they all kind of look like the same shade on! Paying $35 for 6 glosses that look practically the same on? I think I’ll pass 😛

    Hi Brittany,

Yah, they are *super* sheer. I like ’em for natural days… but yah, if you are going for the bling this probably won’t be the set to bring it! 🙂

I really like the Pink Champagne/ Blackberry Bloom one but just like Brittany I thought that there would be more color.

    Thanks Karen!

I really like the colors in the tubes, but on the lips they’re just too sheer. I always love the idea of a new plumping gloss though in case I get bored of my Too Faced Lip Injection.

    Hi Ellery,

I haven’t tried that one. Does it sting?

The last time I tried these, they were sticky beyond all reason! Are they reformulated or are they still tacky to the extreme? I also have to cast my vote with those who find these a little too similar, I would love a set of six that looked very different!

I like Clinique lip glosses a lot more than MAC’s but since these colors are so similar, I think I’ll pass.

Ooh i like blackberry bloom…and at least the wear time is decent.
I’m still kinda on makeup lock down though…but redoing my entire kitchen…is so going to be worth being frugal now…

    Hi Glosslizard,

They are still pretty sticky. I think they are less sticky than MAC Lipglasses, though. Dunno… gloss seems to be such a personal thing, like fragrance!

    Hi Dao,

Yeah, I think this set is geared toward those that love really sheer shades!

    Hi Megan,

How exciting! What color/colors are you going with?

I haven’t fully decided yet…Seriously I have two different ideas in my head that are almost exact opposites. The first is dark to medium cabinets with stainless steel appliances and a whitish or light gray countertop (I like corian the best). The second is almost all white. White cabinets and countertops – probably still with stainless steel…if I go with this I will put in a darker backsplash…I don’t know…I can’t decide what I want 🙂
