You Gotta Put in Work with Styledriven’s MAC Pro Longwear Lipglasses

September 17th, 2011 by Karen 33 Comments

mac full speed ahead

I have mixed emotions about Styledriven’s MAC Pro Longwear Lipglasses…

As a longtime Lipglass fan (10 years plus!), I expected to fall hard for these super pigmented, ultra shiny, long-wearing glosses, but beyond a few similarities — a sticky consistency and a light vanilla flavor and scent — they’re quite unlike their older cousins. As for pigment, MAC increased the dosage. They also thickened the formula, cranked up the shine and replaced the traditional doe-foot applicator with a paddle in the shape of an hourglass.

I can’t believe I’m saying this…but I think MAC may have actually overloaded these with pigment. They’re so highly concentrated with color that I think it makes them a little more difficult than regular Lipglasses to apply. These aren’t the kind of glosses I can apply in five seconds and be on my merry way. They require a steady hand and patience, and a lip liner doesn’t hurt.

After playing with five of the nine shades this week, I think I saw my best results when I took a restrained approach, applying very little on my lips, because whenever I did apply more, they looked thick, uneven and goopy, pooling and catching on every little flake and dry patch. Which reminds me, I also feel these are somewhat more drying than regular Lipglasses.

I like the colors and love the shine, but these border on high maintenance for me. If you don’t mind putting in the work and you’re already a Lipglass fan, these might be a good fit for you.

PRICE: $18.50 U.S./$22 CDN each
AVAILABILITY: Coming September 22 to MAC counters and stores in North America; internationally some time this month

I’m loving the colors, but I’m worried about the “high maintenance” part. My lip application process are my least time consuming part of my routine! UGH. But knowing me.. I will probably buy the four non dark colored ones. As always, I rely on you’re opinion for my makeup purchases. Thanks.

i think one of the man reasons i love gloss is because it’s easy to apply, so the fact that these are more high maintenance is a bit of a turn off =/. which is sad, because the shades are SO lovely. i especially like Driven By Love

I’m not a huge fan of Lipglasses (besides Evolution Revolution!) so I’ll probably skip these. Plus, I’m pretty low maintenance when it comes to lip products. I prefer something I can swipe on without a mirror.

Full Speed Ahead looks gorgeous! But you’re right – for lipglosses I want a quick, easy pop of shine and color. If application is more time-consuming, I’d rather opt for a lipstick!

These look really great on you, but I don’t think I could deal with the maintenance factor. When something is so highly pigmented and a little difficult to work with I get a feeling during the day like I’ve smeared it all over my face (even if I haven’t). It’s a shame because these really do look fantastic on you!

I like the way these look, a lot. I usually don’t go for anything pricier than the $14.50 lipglass, but I think I’ll make an exception for these.

Wow, too much pigment? I didn’t think that was possible!

Driven by Love is what i hoped Sonoran Rain would be, so I’m going to check that out.

I think there are so many gorgeous fall colours here, but I’m now hesitant because you said that they’re high-maintenance and drying. Hmm…I’ll need to think about it some more before I get any. I prefer glosses that I can just slick on and go without fussing around with it.

They look pretty on you. Lasting Achievement is my favourite from the bunch. I’ve been anxious to rock a dark-red lip. The last time I did it was in high school, I think.

I actually bought some today at the PRO store. I overheard one of the artists telling a customer that you only need a little and then blend. It is thicker and requires a bit more elbow grease than I’m used to for lipgloss (I think part of it is also the applicator as I feel I might break it if I push too hard, lol), but I had to have the pretty colors. =D
