A Sneak Peek at the New Barbie All Doll’d Up Makeup Line

November 14th, 2008 by Karen 22 Comments

Barbie’s turning 50 this year! To celebrate her big 5-0, Mattel is rolling out a new line of cosmetics and skin care products in 2009, says WWD.

The beauty line is just one part of a huge marketing push by Mattel Inc. to market Barbie as a fashion brand and includes new partnerships with Bloomingdale’s, Vera Wang, Jeremy Scott, IMG and the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

From the looks of these product pics the makeup appears targeted for grown ups, rather than kids or tweens. Somebody in marketing obvs has a sense of humor — the makeup line is called “All Doll’d Up,” and the skin care line is named “Plastic Smooth,” LOLZ. Both the cheeky product names and packaging remind me a little bit of Benefit Cosmetics.

I loves me some Barbie so I’m pretty stoked about this! I really hope the products perform well (and that Skipper gets at least a lipgloss shout out). I wonder if they plan to roll out a Ken line for men. 🙂

What do you think about the upcoming Barbie makeup and skin care collections?

i’m not sure what i think about it. beauty shouldn’t be about trying to accomplish the barbie look. barbies are just unrealistic. if people are smart enough to know that and realize cosmetics are purely for fun, than i’m all for a barbie makeup line.

Did you say Jem? Hot damn. I may be young, but I love me some Jem. Haaaay.

And I dig this Barbie thing. Its cheeky and way cute looking. I’m still sad about not getting to the MAC’s Barbie collection in time, so I’m really excited to see how this fares.

I’m calling this idea certifiably weird until I see the stuff in person. I mean, Barbie? She’s not even a real person. How do you base makeup off someone fictional…and an unrealistic representation of a human being even in her fictional portrait?

It’s one thing to collaborate for the packaging…a whole other to base looks from a doll.

The jury’s out on this for me until I see it up close.

Barbie was always the epitome of what little girls were expected to like… therefore I couldn’t like it! I still can’t quite handle it! 😉

It sounds like the Barbie people got wind of how successful Disney’s Princess marketing push was this year. But at least the Disney Princesses had personalities and stories. Barbie is just so…plastic. It’s disturbing to me that women will seriously attempt to look like a child’s plaything.

Mmmm this makes me feel slightly better about missing the MAC collection but still I doubt this will be available in Canada anytime soon if at all.

I’m not gonna front – I’ll probably end up buying a gloss or something just for the packaging!

    I LOVE BARBIE!
If you could see my “toy room” (in my parents house) with all of my Barbies, you would die. I have more than any girl should be allowed to have!

Sadly, most of them no longer resemble Barbies, because of the “makeovers” I performed on them. Btw, makeovers=Choppy, mascara streaked hair.

I remember when I got a Barbie beauty set…Wow, that stuff was pungent! I liked it anyways, because it was “Barbie” brand. I cringe at the thought of it now.

All in all…This is obviously geared towards children, so I’m not really excited about it. I’ve passed the Barbie stage in my life!

I was Jem for Halloween when I was 6–LOVE her! If there was ever a makeup line for her, I’d be all over it!

I like Barbie stuff b/c of cute packaging, but then, I don’t really want to look like a Barbie, and how many light pink lipglosses can a girl own??

They were probably testing the waters first with barbie for Mac. I like the humor and originality, but the packaging could be way better. Anyway, it won’t be long before women start complaining that it gives the false impression that woman can/should look like barbies.

I’ve never liked Barbie, so I’m not bothered about the make-up line, I was always into Jem though and if she bought out a make-line, you know it would always be cooler.

My nieces love Barbie so I’m going to buy some of these cosmetics and see what they think. I wish it was available for Christmas though, but it sounds like maybe next year instead.

The packaging is really cute, but I don’t think that I would buy it. I can imagine the looks if I were to pull one of these out of my purse at a dinner to freshen up my face. I think this line is more suitable for the teens.
