UPDATE 8/24/14: What’s shakin’? I mean, other than the GROUND BENEATH MY FEET. So, this morning at 3:20 a.m. (incidentally, shortly after the witching hour), I’m jostled awake in bed by a 6.0 earthquake. Almost immediately, El Hub says like a drill sergeant, “Get up, up, up! Doorway, now!” We wobble together to the doorway, and then when the quake doesn’t quickly stop, we decide to make our way downstairs, thinking that we should probably get out of the house. We’re almost to the front door when the shaking suddenly stops.
The quake was centered about 10 miles north of us near Napa, so pretty close, but we appear to have made it out unscathed. No visible damage to the house, and everyone is fine…although Tabs was definitely freaked out. He just needed some extra soothing. 🙂 I hope you’re doing well.
*sigh* I would love to be playing in the tropics right now and having my coffee with fresh papaya at a beachside cafe overlooking a bright blue lagoon while we make our plans for the day. Should we hike to that waterfall on the map we got from the concierge, go snorkeling, or just take a chill drive around the island and sightsee? Or do you think we have time to do all three?
Aah! That sounds like heaven to me. 🙂

Oh my gosh, the last time I got a bad sunburn was the 4th of July. I’m always very careful about applying sunblock frequently, especially if I’m in the sun for a long time. My boyfriend and I were on a 13 mile canoe trip on the river (takes about 6-8 hours) and we stopped on an island for lunch about 1/3 of the way through the trip.
HE LEFT THE SUNBLOCK ON THE ISLAND.
And of course we didn’t realize it until we’d set off and made our way downstream. Four hours later we reached our car at the take-out, looking like absolute lobsters. My skin hurt for a week and peeled for three. 🙁

I don’t typically sunburn but the only bad sunburn I ever got was when I was 8 or 9&had been swimming all day with my cousin visiting from washington..seriously from 9am to 9pm my butt was in that pool.was lobster red&had 2 wear my one of my grandpa’s undershirts completely soaking wet to bed for a week..it was painful.then turned into a tan the next week, thankgoodness.i usually only peel when I spend a few hours in the summer sun for the 1st time in months& since it was halfway into summer I got to skip the diseased monkey look.

Best makeup this Week was some bright purple Urban Decay eye shadow packed on my lids, softened out in the crease with a bronzy Trish McEvoy. Nars foundation in Fiji, finished out with some Naked Bronzing palette. Using my Shu Uemura eyelash curler, I gave my fringe some Trish McEvoy mascara love in jet black. Oh yeah! And Bobbi Brown black liner in jet in my waterlines. BOOM!

I wore cut crease Orange eyeshadow today. My husband made fun of me.
I wore several shades of a purple-ish blue eyeshadow with a close shade of eyeliner underneath on my waterline and a little black kohl smudged at the outer corners of my top lids.
The last time I poorly chose to expose my ghostly skin to the sun I ended up with a blistered burn across my shoulders and a permanent scar to remind me to never go without sunscreen

I’ve gotten sunburns before, of course, but one summer I got sun POISONING. Needless to say, it sucked. You get hot and cold at the same time, and you just want to tear your skin off to find some sort of comfort. Luckily it went away pretty quickly!

I interned at Reader’s Digest in college and it was an awesome experience!
I did something totally different for my best makeup day this week. I normally tend toward pinks & golds on my eyes. This night, I did a Bare Minerals All Over Face shimmer as a bronzer, Benefit Rocketur for my cheeks, and then a lavender eye shadow from Bare Minerals for all over the lid, an olive/khaki green Bare Minerals for the outer quadrant, and Factory from Naked 3 for the crease. After putting black liquid liner on my top and bottom lash line, I lined my bottom lash line in emerald green (waterproof, Sephora brand) and my top lashes in a purple sparkly Urban Decay liner. I loved the whole look!

I was an intern this past spring for the Japan-America Society of Washington, DC. I got to help plan and orchestrate the annual Japanese Street Festival. It was a lot of long nights and hard work, but I really enjoyed it and I’m happy to have been a part of it.

Being fair, I tend to sunburn and I got a BAD one when I was 13, vacationing in Cancun. Sick as a dog and from then on I avoid sun much like a vampire. I’m almost 47 and crossing fingers, have not seen any ill effects from that one.

We went to Lowe’s today with hopes of buying a water heater, dishwasher and stuff to fix the old and busted tub fixtures and grout that’s falling out. No one was around in appliances for a good 5 minutes so after all our wandering before we needed to get the baby back for his nap. On the upside though, we finally picked out new light fixtures for the entryway and over the table we eat at. Both were very dated (70s maybe?) and one had done bad wiring. We’d been looking for a while! So, whew. 🙂
When I was real young, I went to the beach with my dad and his friends. He had a bottle of some kind of tanning spray that helped speed up the tanning process. I wasn’t allowed to use it, obviously. So, when no one was looking I put the bottle behind my back and continuously sprayed one section of my lower back. I never said anything and went on about my day. When my dad dropped me off back at my mom’s later that night she could not figure out for the life of her why this one section of my back was so badly burned. I don’t think I’ve ever told her. LOL!

I wore a Mint chiffon blouse with a long rose gold necklace that had a Jar pendant with crystals. Paired it with dark blue skinny jeans and nude flats. ^_^

On my best makeup day this week I did a cat eye with the Korres volcanic ash eyeliner I got in Greece (+ an old Chanel eyeshadow in ‘Midnight Taupe’ and Urban Decay’s Perversion mascara), and someone said she donated $5 to the museum where I work because she liked my eyeliner so much!

I got a sunburn in june that was pretty bad. Red like a lobster from laying in the sun too long but the body shop blueberry scrub and body butter helped it enough that I never became lizard man. I should have known better by now. Speaking of which, I really want to see the becca eyeshadow pallet. I know I don’t need another one but I don’t have a warm matte one so I guess it’s worth it…right?

I love Love LOVE to travel down the Pacific Coast Highway. You get to experience a bit of everything: the ocean, mountains, rainforest, wine country, orchards, whale watching, surfing, Starbucks… And the list goes on. It’s one of my true loves!
I really liked Istanbul when I was there earlier this summer! I saw a freestanding Make Up For Ever store my first day.
I take to languages quite easily!
I learned French, Mandarin, and Spanish – I only wished that I stayed in countries (for an extended period of time) which utilized those respective languages so that the languages would stick with me!

My favorite place to vacation is in East Tennessee. I love the Smoky Mountains and it’s always 20 degrees cooler there in the summer. Plus, it’s not as crowded as a lot of other places. (I also love NYC, but the crowds stress me out. lol)

On my good makeu0 day this week I wore the Sample of the Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder foundation in Nude I got from a Sephora order which is a very good match, on my eyes I wore Wet’N Wild Comfort Zone mainly the Definer shade that looks like MAC’s club eyeshadow, a light matte brown color shade from Physicians Formula Canyon Classics quad, the matte cream from the same quad, L’Oréal Miss Manga mascara and Revlon Superlustrous lip gloss in Super Natural.
My fave vacation spot atm is Amsterdam 🙂

Yes, when I was 12 I fell asleep laying out on the dock at the lake. I sleep for like 5 hours and woke up with the most horrendous sunburn. I was sick for 3 days with sun poisoning and I can still remember the pain.

My poor oldest kitty was super spooked by this morning’s earthquake. She was curled up with me, and she sat bolt upright in bed, then ran off (over my husband, LOL) about 30 seconds before we started to feel the shaking.

Thank you for the update Karen. I was wondering how you and tabs are since hearing about the quake. I’m in the Los Angeles area, and I’m dreading our ‘big one’.
First off I’m so glad you all are okay. I saw the news and read a few reports about the quake and instantly prayed that everyone in that area was okay. Those things are scary. Nothing much going on today except: deep conditioning my hair and watching a bit of tv (I rented Riddick and I plan on finishing it today).
What’s something you would love to learn? I’d really love to learn Spanish. I do know a few sentences, can maneuver myself around asking for a bathroom, some food or water but I want to have a full on conversation.
I once got a really bad sunburn while snorkeling in the scorching sun.
I’d put on sunscreen, gone in and then out of the water and after lunch, I’d gone back in the water without re-applying the sunscreen. Result: burns on the entire backside of my body (including the inside of my knees: OUCH!!), second degree burns on my shoulders and a sunstroke. The days following were excruciating.
Glad to know you guys are okay. In the peninsula we got maybe a 3.0 earthquake from the rumble you guys experienced. Thankfully no one got hurt and there was no property damage in my neighborhood.
Sadly I have had many bad burns, back in my teens when I didn’t take sunscreen seriously. Hello brown spots on my face.

Luckily, I have never gotten a bad sunburn but I am really bad at wearing sunscreen religiously. I have also not found a good one that suits my skin type. I feel most are either watery or too greasy.

I got a little sun the last two days (mowing, yay…) but its been awhile since I’ve had a bad sunburn. I used to tan almost everyday but about a year ago I gave it up and I’m trying to treat my skin better!

Last bad sunburn was when I was 12 or so. Coppertone SPF 4 anyone? These days, it’s SPF 30 or above everyday. And lots of big hats!

Ugh, I got a horrible sunburn this spring! I’m from San Diego, but I live in Michigan now, and I was dying from the endless winter, so I took my tax return and went to Puerto Rico. I got a little overexcited about the sun and the ocean, and got unbelievably burned due to an all-day snorkeling trip. It was on the second day of my trip too, so I had to go around in the heat all burned for the next five days! Next time I will have to ease myself back into the sunshine more carefully I guess.
I’d love to learn Chinese- actually I wish I could learn every language and then implement them on a world traveling extravaganza!
I felt an earthquake once in Mexico. I remember waking up because the bed was rocking violently. It was scary since I was only a kid wishing at that moment I was back home with my parents. Oddly enough my aunt and cousin did not feel it.
The very best vacation I’ve ever had was two spring breaks ago my two daughters and I cruised to Jamaica, the Caymen Islands and Mexico. Even though we were told our cell phones would work on the ship they didn’t and it was a blessing because all three of us were unplugged and had quality time together and fun!!! I would not trade it for anything in the world.
Oh gosh as far as makeup I would say that my fav look of the week used my beloved MAC Satin Taupe. This is my serious HG eye shadow from MAC due to how unique it is…I love it!

This summer was my worst sunburn, I was in SF for work May-July (peak sun time here in NY), I came back went out on my families boat lathered the sunscreen on and fried. I was using expired sunscreen. I was just an all around epic fail.

My favorite place is Puerto Rico. It was my husband and I’s first trip outside of the states; we stood at La Concha in San Juan. Beauuutiful location, great views, amazing food and drinks and the BEST company. I had a smile plastered on my face all 5 days. Trying to surprise him with return trip for his 30th birthday in April!!
I loved “22 Jump Street” – it was hilarious…and Channing Tatum is so hot!!

Hey karen yes I have gotten a bad sunburn lately. I went to Florida this year and burned my shoulders. This is a first for me. I’m African American and although I know we can burn I never thought I could burn so bad id peel. Yuck but yes that’s exactly what happened. My bf laughed at me and once the pain subsided it wasn’t that bad. I used sunblock everyday but it almost seemed like the sunblock cooked my skin more. Lol

I always get an awful sunburn the first time I am at the beach in the summer. Once I burn the first time, I am typically ok. But that first burn is always awful. This year I burned so bad that it left patches of dark skin on my legs and back. And I always use sunscreen!

I had the WORST sunburn a few weeks ago, but I managed to avoid most of the nasty aftermath by slathering on Target brand aloe vera, Burt’s Bee’s After Sun Lotion, and Gold Bond Healing with Aloe lotion. This is why I prefer the rain.
I burn like crazy if I’m out in the sun for 15 minutes without protection. It’s the curse of my Anglo ancestry, I suppose.

The day I had the best makeup day was when I used the Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette, I swear I’m about to hit pan on salted caramel because it’s the best transition & crease color ever!
I’ve been sunburnt twice my entire life, and always because of medicines I was on. It’s not fun!
I can’t remember when I got a sunburn, but I try to sunbath during my lunch hour then take a few minutes of z if weather permits!
