Bite Beauty Upswing Extreme Longwear Liquid Eyeliner

March 10th, 2021 by Karen 6 Comments

bite beauty upswing extreme longwear liquid eyeliner
Bite Beauty’s new $25 Upswing Extreme Longwear Liquid Eyeliner is pretty good!

This product does not bite.

There, I said it. ?

Bite’s new $25 matte black liquid liner has flower power. (Side note: I just threw up a double-peace sign.) By flower power, I don’t mean in the “Let’s come together and love one another, man!” way. I’m referring to passion fruit flowers.

It’s the not-so-secret ingredient in this “clean” (air quotes) formula to stop smudging, transferring and flaking.

Also, remember when “carbon black” was the hottest thing in eyeliner and mascara? So many products boasted about being “carbon black.” Well, this liner is actually carbon black-free (I’m honestly unsure if that’s a good or bad thing).

The liner has a long wand with a flexible, thin brush, which broke my heart a little when I first saw it because I typically do better with pen-style liners. For whatever reason, they’re just easier for me to hold and easier to execute a wing or a baby kitten flick with. Just a personal preference.

I’m fine using this wand along the lash line, and I can draw thin, precise lines with it there, but when I get out to the wing with it, I’m a mess. I can eventually get there, but it requires cleaning up the edges with a Q-tip and some makeup remover to get a chiseled edge I like. So there’s that.

The liner itself is really beautiful, though. It’s a deep, dark true black without any blue or red undertones, and each layer is intensely pigmented.

The formula also glides and dries in about a minute, which is nice and quick, so it doesn’t transfer up into my lids when I blink.

I haven’t worn it for a full 12-hour period yet, but I have worn it from shortly after dawn till dusk, and it does just fine. No flaking or fading in that time.

If you’re good with a wand applicator and looking for a “clean” product in the $25 range, put it on your list of possibilities to try.

FYI, Honest Beauty’s liquid liner is comparable. It also has a wand with a flexible tip, a similarly rich black color without any weird undertones, and it’s $9.99. That said, the Beauty Beauty one is a smidgen darker and smoother, IMO, and consequently a little easier to use, but both are quite good.

This or That: The Eyeshadow Palette Edition

March 9th, 2021 by Karen 12 Comments

maybelline city mini palette
Asking the deep, burning questions about palettes!

How to play

Pick one or the other for each of the questions below, and copy/paste your answers in the comments. Can’t wait to see your picks! Mine are listed below. ?

This or That: The Eyeshadow Palette Edition

  • All matte or all shimmer?
  • Practical colors or fun colors?
  • Creams or powders?
  • Do you use the brush that comes with the palette, or do you ditch it?
  • 7 or fewer shades, or more than 7 shades?
  • With a mirror or without?
  • Magnetic closure or snap?
  • Black or white packaging?
  • Build your own or buy premade?
  • It’s time to refresh your makeup bag! Do you re-purchase a palette you know and love, or buy a new palette from a brand you haven’t tried before that looks exciting?

All matte or all shimmer?

All matte, no doubt!

Practical colors or fun colors?

Girl, when did I get so #basic? Gimme those practical colors. (SIGH) At least I know I’ll wear them. ?‍♀️

Creams or powders?

Powders that feel like creams! ?

Do you use the brush that comes with the palette, or do you ditch it?

I’ll keep it around but only use it out of sheer desperation… I’m crazy picky about my brushes.

7 or fewer shades, or more than 7 shades?

10 is the sweet spot for me!

With a mirror or without?

With a mirror, because you just never know.

Magnetic closure or snap?

Magnetic closure! They eliminate having to pay any attention at all when you open and close, and I’m all for that. Also, it’s not like I’m hitting the open road right now, so I’m not worried about things jostling around and unexpectedly opening in my makeup bag.

Black or white packaging?

I like the look of white packaging (plus, it’s easier to find white products in my bag for some reason), but black is generally easier to keep clean. So…black.

Build your own or buy premade?

Build your own!

It’s time to refresh your makeup bag! Do you re-purchase a palette you know and love, or buy a new palette from a brand you haven’t tried before that looks exciting?

A new palette to play with would be fun, so let’s do that!

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 668

March 8th, 2021 by Karen 37 Comments

every morning is a fresh start march 08 2021
I hope you have a wonderful day today!

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. ?

    1. Mango or pineapple?

Oh! — pineapple please, ideally of the fresh variety, perhaps at the breakfast buffet at Duke’s in Hawaii, although I won’t say no to canned. ?

    2. What’s the farthest you’ve ever run?

That would be 13.1 miles in the Nike Women’s Half Marathon, and for the record…I don’t ever need to run that far again, LOL!

    3. Your thoughts on shadow/liner on the lower lash line?

If it rocks your socks off, go for it! I do it every once in a blue moon now but not as often as I used to, partly due to makeup laziness, and partly due to my belief that I’m just better off now when I wear less in that general area.

    4. Plaid, gingham or stripes?

My heart says plaid, but my brain says vertical stripes (so slimming!).

    5. Rice or pasta?

    YES!

    6. How does your hair look when you air dry it?

Not bad since I stopped dyeing it, but I gotta prep it before it dries so it looks presentable, so I work in a few blobs of leave-in conditioner, spray a lightweight and flexible spray gel into my bangs, then clip my bangs down so they’ll lie flat.

    7. Pick one gang/crew to hang out with:

    • Blanche, Dorothy, Sophia and Rose
    • Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte
    • Big Bird, the Count, Bert and Ernie

No question — Blanche, Dorothy, Sophia and Rose! ?

    8. What team sports have you played?

None, unfortunately. I wish I would’ve played a team sport when I was growing up because I think I would’ve enjoyed it. Plus, you learn so much about body awareness and important life lessons, like how to win and lose gracefully.

Sports just weren’t valued in my family, though.

    9. Are you seeing any signs of spring around your neighborhood?

Yup! The leaves are starting to return on some of the oaks, and the cherry blossoms are finally blooming. Note to self: it’s time to start taking allergy meds again.

    Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

    Karen

P.S. Here are the questions to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to ya soon.

    1. Mango or pineapple?
    2. What’s the farthest you’ve ever run?
    3. Your thoughts on shadow/liner on the lower lash line?
    4. Plaid, gingham or stripes?
    5. Rice or pasta?
    6. How does your hair look when you air dry it?
    7. Pick one gang/crew to hang out with:

    • Blanche, Dorothy, Sophia and Rose
    • Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte
    • Big Bird, the Count, Bert and Ernie

    8. What team sports have you played?
    9. Are you seeing any signs of spring around neighborhood?

P.P.S. Hi there, sweet girl! Happy International Women’s Day! I hope this Monday brings you plenty of peace, happiness and joy. You’re exactly where you need to be, alright? You’re doing better than you think! ?

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 649

March 7th, 2021 by Karen 6 Comments

That little lion sure could work the camera angles, couldn’t he? Tabs was always a consummate kitty modeling professional, even when you thought he was just chilling. He could simultaneously look completely relaxed while striking the most epic kitty modeling poses. It was something to behold.

He did some of his best work in spring too. When the flowers started blooming, his colorful collars came out, which made his photographer’s job easy.

Spring is in the air!

Rosie

Rosie may not have Tabs’ modeling aspirations, but she still loves a good photoshoot.

As far as kitty modeling goes, it’s more of a hobby for her…a way to unwind after a tough day in the lab.

I gotta say, she’s still getting good though. She’s sure working those lynx ear tips somethin’ fierce! ?

banana republic black pants
Happy Saturday!

Cue the trumpets! ? I’m wearing pants that actually fit, and they aren’t workout pants (!).

Heavens to Murgatroyd, why did I put off getting real post-baby body clothes for so long? I feel like a legit human being again! It only took five years! Better late than never, I guess. ?

These are the Slim Wide-Leg Cropped Pants from Banana Republic, BTW. Please note how they don’t look cropped on me…

banana republic black pants

I’m 5-foot-one, so I ordered my usual size, but I got them in a regular length with a long inseam so the pants would look longer on my legs, as opposed to cropped.

This was the first time I employed that trick, and my life is forever changed! Now I don’t have to hem.

I love the high rise and pockets, and they don’t readily wrinkle either (it’s a poly/rayon/spandex blend). There’s also a little stretch for comfort.

Bonus: they’re machine washable! ?

I’m also wearing a vintage tee, vintage denim jacket (it’s GAP from the ’90s) and sneakers to keep it casual, but you could dress things up with a silky blouse and flats.

Last time I checked, the pants were still on sale at Banana Republic, if you’re interested.

If you’re also tired of wearing pants that double as pajamas (because I totally am), these are great.

On that note, this week’s reading…

  • Dudes are buying makeup for Zoom calls!
  • Sephora’s adding more “clean brands” to their lineup.
  • Makeup artists share their favorite products for monolids/hooded eyes.
  • These are the makeup trends to look forward to in the fall.
  • Coming soon to Ulta: a “WandaVision” x ULTA collab!
  • 11 nail polish shades that are perfect for ladies (and gents) with dark skin.
  • “Mentos. The FRESH MAKER!”
  • I’m a Gypsy Water girl myself, but I kinda want to try Byredo Mixed Emotions just because I like the name.
  • If you love Hawaii as much as I do, then you might like these local beauty brands.
  • Neck care is now a thing.
  • 11 skin care products that are safe to use while pregnant or nursing, according to Allure.
  • Cats having a spa day!
  • Bookmark this list of gifts for people who love reading and cats.
  • This is why your cat likes to sleep at the foot of the bed.

Need this in my life, like, yesterday.

This looks so fun.

Fun things to do in one of my favorite places

I couldn’t look away.

I appreciate all the animal print wall paper.

Yes, please.

Starbuck from BSG dropping knowledge

He’s a cold hearted snake!

Dreaming of the day I can visit these places…

What’s the plan for the weekend?

Warm Reddish Brown Smokey Eyes With Teal Lids and Liner | Day 2 With the Urban Decay Naked Wild West Palette

March 5th, 2021 by Karen 2 Comments

urban decay naked wild west teal brown smokey eyes

Don’t ask me why this never occurred to me before, because you know I love streamlining, but today I wore the same shade of eyeshadow as a lid color and a liner color, and WHOOP-WHOOP! — my world is forever changed.

Do you ever do this? Because if you do, you’re officially a genius.

urban decay naked wild west teal brown smokey eyes

There’s a dark matte teal in the new Urban Decay Naked Wild West palette, and that’s what inspired me to try it.

I wanted some contrast between the lid color and liner, so I started by applying the lid shadow with a flat eyeshadow brush. Next, I buffed out the edges with a clean domed shadow brush, then blended a couple of warm matte browns into my crease to soften the edges.

After that, to amplify the intensity of the liner, I wet an angled brush with MAC Fix+, loaded it with the teal shadow, and lined my upper upper and lower lash lines. I kept the upper lash line crisp and buffed out the lower lash line for just a whisper of color…

I really like the harmony between the lid and liner colors, and there’s also a slight gradient affect!

I’m going to try it again in the near future, but not with this exact same shade of teal because it’s a little patchy…

urban decay naked wild west teal brown smokey eyes

It’s been a minute since I’ve worn colorful smokey eyes, and I figured out one of the reasons for this while I was doing this makeup — the shape of my eyes has changed so much in the last year, and that’s made doing looks like this a little more challenging to do.

Ya know…it’s just time doing its thang. Plus, the stress of the pandemic. *shrugs*

So what do we do? We adjust, right?

I feel like colorful shadow generally looks better on me when I keep the color lower on my lids and don’t go too far out in the outer corners… Took me a while to figure this one out, but eh, better late than never!

Gosh, I wish makeup magazines talked about this more — how the shape of your face changes as you get older. It feels like I’m relearning everything and starting from scratch. I mean, I knew this was coming, but I don’t feel like I was given an adequate heads-up, LOL!

Makeup worn in this look

  • BASE: Urban Decay Stay Naked Hydromaniac Tinted Moisturizer in 50 mixed with Lancome Skin Feels Good in Tan set with MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in Medium Golden
  • EYES: Urban Decay Naked Wild West shadows in Standoff (base), Nude and Ghost Town (crease), Whiskey (outer third), Tex (lids and lash lines)
  • CHEEKS: Chanel No. 22 cream blush
  • LIPS: Origins Coral Daisy sheer lipstick

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. TGIF! 🙂

Bronze and Gray Lids With the Urban Decay Naked Wild West Palette

March 4th, 2021 by Karen 9 Comments

urban decay naked wild west swatches
Yup, more naked. ?

Seriously, how many more of these are they gonna do?!

The newest incarnation of ze Naked palette calls itself Naked Wild West (no relation to Kanye), and it’s inspired by the California desert.

No, not dessert. DESert. ?

urban decay naked wild west swatches

I patted Rustler, the shimmery bronze shade, on my lids and was surprised to see taupe-y grey undertones when I blended out the edges.

Kinda cool…both literally and figuratively, hahaha. To complement the gray, I lined my upper lash line with an angled brush that I’d dipped into Pony Up, the matte dark gray.

I did remember to tap my brushes to unload any excess powder before applying but still ended up with a little bit of fallout on my cheeks. Not a lot though…

I hadn’t done my base yet (a 50/50 mix of Urban Decay 24-Hour Hydration in 50 Medium, and Lancôme Skin Feels Good in Tan, set with MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural) so I just wiped it off. No biggie.

For my cheeks, I swept a low-key hero from the UD permanent line, the Stay Naked Threesome trio in Naked, onto my cheeks (the bronzer and the blush).

Incidentally, I’m still on an Origins sheer lipstick kick, so I layered two shades on my lips — Honey Blush and Fuchsia Fields — to finish the look.

Just for fun, I tried the makeup with a brighter lip using Honest Beauty Passion.

It’s nice to have options, ya know?

In other news…I’m all “mommed out” from the birthday excitement of the past few days, and I’m super tried right now! I skipped exercising yesterday, so I told myself this morning that I had to work out today…but right now all I want to do is take a nap.

Ugh, I know I’ll feel better when I’m done with it though. I just have to remind myself that I don’t have to give it 100%… 50% today will do!

You already know this, but Target has some weird stuff.

This or That: The Hair Dye Edition

March 3rd, 2021 by Karen 12 Comments

How to play

Pick one or the other for each of the questions below, and copy/paste your answers in the comments. Can’t wait to see your picks! Mine are listed below. ?

This or That: The Hair Dye Edition

  • Salon or at-home dye?
  • Highlights or balayage?
  • Darker or lighter color?
  • Subtle or dramatic?
  • One color or multiple colors?
  • Just for fun — pink hair or blue hair?
  • Best way to hide roots — root spray, hat or headband?

Salon or at-home dye?

Currently, neither, but if I have to pick one…then salon dye. That way I won’t end up with a mess all over my bathroom walls! 🙂

Highlights or balayage?

Balayage (because it sounds fancy).

Darker or lighter color?

Ya know, I loved my hair lighter than my natural color, so I’ll go with lighter, but only if have unlimited time, funds and patience. LOL! Basically, it’s too expensive, takes too much time and is super high-maintenance, which is why I stopped doing it.

Subtle or dramatic?

I’m going to shock myself and go with “subtle.”

One color or multiple colors?

Multiple.

Just for fun: pink or blue hair?

Ooh! — pale pastel pink in a heartbeat.

Best way to hide roots — root spray, hat or headband?

Root spray, but only if it’s Rita Hazan’s.
