Wishing You a Beautiful Thanksgiving

November 26th, 2009 by Karen 30 Comments

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi, girls. 🙂 Before I’m too stuffed to type, I wanted to wish you and yours a wonderful day today. Tabs is in the kitchen right now, hard at work preparing our Thanksgiving feast.

Not really, of course… He’s actually sleeping under a window. I, on the other hand, am getting ready to head out to the East Bay to spend the day with the fam.

I feel like I have so much to be thankful for, and I hope that you do too. 🙂 Happy Thanksgiving!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

MAC Unsung Hero: Powersurge Eye Kohl

November 25th, 2009 by Karen 41 Comments

mac powersurge eye kohl tip

If MAC ever discontinues Powersurge Eye Kohl ($15), I’ll hunt down every pencil at every MAC counter within a 30-mile radius, fo’ reals.

My love for this shimmery golden bronze eye pencil runs deeeeep. A MAC artist introduced me to it about two years ago, and ever since that fateful day this pencil has graced my waterline many a time.

On days when I don’t want the harshness of a black or brown liner, I like Powersurge. I think it adds just the right touch of emphasis to my lower waterline without leaving me looking too overdone.

Here she is in action with MAC Style Black…

Curious about Powersurge? Here are a few earlier posts:

  • MAC Starflash Goes Back to School: A Purple and Gold Eye
  • MAC Golden Olive Pigment Tutorial: A Green Eye for St. Patrick’s Day
  • Going Peach and Purple with MAC Brunette Blonde Redhead
  • MAC Cosmetics Blue and Green Face of the Day

I love it with gold, purple, bronze and green eyeshadows, but I think it also looks great on its own … or with curled lashes and tons of mascara, yay! 🙂

Have you met MAC Powersurge?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Ash Me About Vaseline Sheer Infusion Body Lotion

November 25th, 2009 by Karen 17 Comments

vaseline sheer infusion botanical blend body lotion

Be warned: When your cat swipes at your shins, he may be trying to warn you about dry skin.

We’re talking ashy ORANGE ALERT, and in my case it was looking exceptionally bad (remember the aliens from the original V?).

Luckily, I think I may have found something to help, and it costs less than $10.

Vaseline’s Sheer Infusion Body Lotion ($8) has been on store shelves for a few months, but I only recently gave it a try.

It contains a complex Vaseline calls Stratys-3, which they claim gets down and dirty to moisturize the deeper layers of skin.

Straight Sexy Hair Smooth and Protect Packs Some Serious Multitasking Mojo

November 25th, 2009 by Karen 33 Comments

straight sexy hair smooth and protect

El Hub threatened to revolt over my hoarding of hairstyling products in the bathroom, which he compares to the beauty aisle at Rite Aid :), so in the name of marital harmony, it’s time I find more hair products that multi-task.

My latest discovery: Straight Sexy Hair Smooth & Protect Flat Iron Hairspray ($14).

Like four products in one, it’s a Vitamin B5-packed aerosol to protect hair from flat iron heat damage while smoothing out frizz, adding shine and moisture and imparting soft, touchable hold (smells faintly of coconut). All that, and it works on either dry OR damp hair.

The Clean Coffret Fragrance Set Is More Than Simply Fresh

November 24th, 2009 by Karen 33 Comments

Clean Coffret Set Review in box

Are you the kind of girl who delights in wearing a different fragrance every day of the week? Clean, a fragrance line known for their light scents and simple aesthetic, sure hopes so. Their new Coffret Set ($65) includes four of their signature scents in 1-oz bottles of eau de parfum.

Clean Coffret Set Review Shower Fresh

Almost lighter than air, they make me float away on a fragrance cloud, and I feel like I can wear them anywhere, whether I’m just lounging around the house, going out to dinner with El Hub or attending a function for work.

Despite their lightness of being, each one lasts a good long time on my skin (about six hours). Even though they share similar citrus and floral notes and have the same just-out-of-the-shower vibe, they’re different enough to be distinct.

Clean Coffret Set Review Simply Soap

Speaking of variety, Clean Coffret oozes with possibilities. I like to layer them (although they also wear well by themselves), and my current crush involves starting with a layer of Warm Cotton, then adding layer of Shower Fresh topped with Simply Soap.

By itself, Shower Fresh reminds me of a pristine tropical waterfall; Clean is like crisp grapefruit, and Warm Cotton brings to mind fresh laundry, set outside to dry in the sun.

Retro Roundup: One and Two Years Ago on Makeup and Beauty Blog

November 24th, 2009 by Karen 28 Comments

112109-one-and-two-years-ago-on-mbb

Yikes, this day is flying by so fast! I can’t believe it’s already lunch time. I think I’m gonna nibble on a PB&J while I take a trip down memory lane. Remember these posts from one and two years ago on MBB?

2008

  • Wedding Makeup Tips, Live Blogging from Boca: We’re here in the bridal suite getting ready! I’ve been picking the makeup artist’s brain (Lynette) for wedding makeup tips and she’s been great!
  • Brown Skin is Beautiful Skin: I don’t usually reprint posts from the archives, but I stumbled across one from June 2007 that still strikes a chord with me. I think it’s more about being considerate than it is about political correctness, cultural mores or stereotypes, but tell me what you think.
  • Essie Winter 2008, aka Her Royal Hotness: Well, cover me in jewels, and bring my royal scepter because the regal shades of rich purple, deep ruby and gold make the Essie Winter 2008 collection ($8 each) a royal tour de force!

2007

  • I love you, MAC Antiquitease!: Against my better judgement, here’s a pic of a face of the day with makeup from MAC’s Antiquitease Limited Edition Collection. El hub walked into the bathroom and announced oh-so-loudly that it was time to eat, and subsequently scared the bejeebus out of me.
  • 43 things I’m thankful for (the makeup edition): So, what happens when you think about what you’re thankful for while staring at your makeup for too long? Well, the Makeup and Beauty Blog version of 43 Things, of course.
  • Red lips and gold eyes: The red lip look is strong, but at the same time versatile. You get lots of mileage out of this look because you can work it in many different settings.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. What did you have for lunch today?
