I’m Seeing Stars Thanks to MAC Love That Look

July 26th, 2009 by Karen 35 Comments

MAC Love That Look

Christmas came early for MAC fans this week as the company moved up the counter release date for two of its collections, Love That Look and Baby Bloom.

Love That Look’s 12 Starflash Eye Shadows ($15), four Pearlglide Eye Liners ($15), makeup brushes and mascara (the brushes and mascara belong to MAC’s permanent line) were expected to arrive at the end of the month. Instead, they dropped last Thursday. 🙂

Starring frosty MAC Starflash!

The uber-frosty Starflash Eye Shadows headline this show, focussing tons of attention on the eyes, BAM!

There’s nothing subtle at all about these powder shadows, so be prepared for bling when you wear ’em.

How I might wear Starflash

I like frosty shadows in moderation and probably wouldn’t wear an eye look using Starflash alone, as super frosty eye looks tend to overload my bling-ometer. I prolly would, though, apply ’em on the lid, outer V or use them as liners, sweeping a matte color into the crease for contrast. That sounds pretty to me.

Makeup and Beauty Blog: Where's Tabs?

I just got a call from VISA warning me of some suspicious activity on my credit card. Apparently Tabs and a girl cat named Snowflake used it to buy first class tickets down to San Diego for Comic Con.

I just got this picture sent to my phone… 🙂

Can you spot Tabs and Snowflake (click for a larger version)?

The Benefit Crescent Row Fragrances: Laugh With Me, Lee Lee

July 26th, 2009 by Karen 6 Comments

benefit laugh with me lee lee review

The more time I spend with the girls of Benefit Crescent Row ($36 each), the more I want to hang with them.

Each of the scents in this trio of fragrances represents a different personality.

Laugh With Me Lee Lee is the fun, flirty member of the group — the girl who loves long bubble baths and frilly lingerie.

Light and delicate

Benefit categorizes her as a woody floral, but she’s the lightest of the three scents, both agreeable and easy to wear.

Crisp notes of melon and orange hit me as Lee Lee enters the room.

“Hello,” she says with an innocent smile, drawing me into her world of unselfconscious beauty.

After a few hours with her, I learn that she’s older than I thought. She reveals a gentle white floral mix of lily and jasmine, slowly evolving into a soft blend of amber and sandalwood.

Would You Rock a Half-Shaved Head?

Would you rock a half-shaved head?

Cassie and Rihanna did it…

Are you next? 🙂

PROS: Requires half as much product, easier to head bang, takes half the time to do
CONS: Unbalanced ponytails, coworkers might look at you funny, can’t wear headbands well

Would you rock a half-shaved head?

MAC Baby Bloom: Now You See It, Now You Don’t

July 25th, 2009 by Karen 33 Comments

MAC is bloomin’ crazy about bright colors and bold makeup, but they do sometimes venture out of their comfort zone.

With the new 10-piece Baby Bloom collection, MAC showcases their nuanced side with five *very* sheer tinted moisturizers and lip balms.

It’s a low-key look for hot days when heavy face makeup is out.

MAC Studio Moisture Tint, $30

The five Studio Moisture Tint SPF 15 tinted moisturizers are new additions to MAC’s permanent line of foundations and replace MAC’s previous foray into the World of Tinted Moisturizers, Select Tint SPF 15 (now discontinued).

The old MAC Select Tints didn’t contain moisturizer — they were just tints — and when I’d wear ’em I’d have to apply some extra moisturizer beneath the color. By adding a moisturizer to the Studio Moisture Tints, MAC kinda lessens the need to use an additional product.

But the old tints were more pigmented than the new Studio Moisture Tints and came in a wider range of colors (including varieties in NC and NW shades. The new Studio Moisture Tints are *much* more sheer sheerer than their predecessors, and MAC consolidated the colors into just five shades:

  • Light: a soft pale beige
  • Medium: a warm beige
  • Medium Dark: a caramel beige
  • Dark: a deep caramel
  • Deep Dark: a rich golden bronze

I haven’t had much success with MAC foundations in the past (they give me breakouts), but I grabbed a tube of Medium Dark to try at home.

What Would a Vampire Think of Bliss Blood Orange and White Pepper Body Butter?

July 25th, 2009 by Karen 19 Comments

bliss-blood-orange-and-white-pepper-body-butter

What would a vampire think of Bliss Blood Orange and White Pepper Body Butter ($35)?

Would they scoff at the price and curse the Bliss marketing team’s misleading use of the word “blood”? More importantly, do the undead even moisturize?

Perhaps they should…

Unlike fangs, it’s subtle

I can’t speak for Vampire Bill, but I like a good body butter after scrubbing down with Bliss Blood Orange and White Pepper Sugar Scrub, and the two products combined make for a pleasant budget Bliss Spa experience at home.

As far as I can tell, the Bliss Blood Orange scent’s subtle mix of blood orange (surprise!), spicy white pepper, coriander and white musk doesn’t vary among the different products in the fragrance line, and the body butter smells just as divine as the scrub.

The scent is subtle (but still noticeable) — a nice break from heavily scented body lotions (aka Black Amethyst).

You notice it’s there, but it doesn’t make you smell like a walking glass of O.J., which also means it plays nicely with other fragrances.
