Checking In: Journaling, a Visit to the San Francisco Zoo, and a Black Mirror Moment With a Hippo

October 2nd, 2020 by Karen 16 Comments

A day at the zoo

I haven’t visited the San Francisco Zoo in years, but El Hub and I played hooky and took Connor this week.

It’s been so long since we ventured out of town, especially south to San Francisco (I think last time was last October?), even though it’s only about 25 miles to the Golden Gate Bridge.

We packed a picnic lunch, ALL THE DISINFECTING WIPES, our Caraa masks, and headed out for the day to learn more about our animal friends.

Things are a little different.

All visits are by reservation only now to enforce a lower maximum occupancy (a maximum of 50% capacity, although there were far fewer people than that on a weekday). You can’t just show up on a whim. You have to buy tickets online beforehand for a specific time, which is great. It really seems like the zoo has taken the pandemic seriously. Plus, the animals seem very well cared for. Enclosures are large, not overcrowded, and very well maintained, and I saw a lot of animals doing casual animal things, not pacing or looking stressed.

Feisty penguins
BTW, peacocks are all over the place! It’s so cool!

Visitors are required to wear masks and social distance at all times, and all of the indoor exhibits are closed. A couple of the dining cafes are open, but you can also bring your own food and drinks, which is what we did. We sat on a big lawn with several socially distanced families to have our lunch.

Run like the wind, ostriches!

It was nice seeing Connor’s eyes light up as she saw so many animals she hasn’t seen before. We meandered for hours and watched penguins plunging into a pool, chimpanzees chomping on romaine lettuce, peacocks preening, and ostriches sprinting — yes, sprinting! — across hills.

Speaking of the ostriches…they are crazy graceful! And so fast. I’d never seen ostriches run long distances before, and when they do, they glide along with their heads hardly even bobbing, while hauling major @ss. They’re like Olympic sprinters!

The grounds and plants are so beautiful.
Connor testing out a 40-year-old zoo “key” we got from neighbor. You place the key inside one of the informational exhibit audio boxes on the grounds, and then turn it to play an informative recording. Unfortch, the key didn’t work anymore. I think it was designed for a system that was phased out years ago!

Layers love you, especially in SF.

I used to live in the city back in the day. It’s been a while since I visited, and I got a stark reminder of the one thing Bay Area peeps always tell visitors when they come to SF — wear layers, because the temperature can swing dramatically, and it’s no joke.

Unsurprisingly, all the big cats wanted to do was nap!

When we drove in at 10, the city was foggy and chilly, but by the time we left four hours later, the sun was out, and it was toasty enough to walk around in a tee shirt and shorts. Yup, if you’ll be visiting SF, wear things you can peel off and put back on if you need to.

Note to self: write in your journal tonight.

Also, while we were there, I had a major “aha!” moment about journaling, of all things. Basically, I gotta start doing it again consistently, even if it’s just a few lines every day; otherwise, my memory is going to erase all of these fleeting, sweet moments with CoyCoy right now as a small child… I desperately don’t want to lose them.

This hit me hard because of a couple things… First off, I was watching her prance through the grounds and talking to the peacocks (and really anyone who would listen to her), saying “I’m having a such great day,” over and over again. It was the sweetest thing to see pure joy on her face. I always want to remember it. ?

Second, while we were walking around I started thinking about a school trip I took to the SF Zoo when I was in sixth grade. I remember foggy, faint snippets of that day, like making my way back to the entrance as we were leaving and looking out the car window at the Bay on the drive home. I also remember all the “cool kids” listening to Lisa Lisa on their Sony Walkman headphones (OMG!).

But, for the life of me, I can’t remember who I hung out with that day, or if I even enjoyed it at all. Was I crabby? Was I cold and wishing that I’d brought an extra jacket? Did I see penguins? I’m genuinely curious, and I wish I had a journal to look to and find out… It would be nice (and 100% hilarious) to remember who I was back then.

Black Mirror moment…with a hippo

Oh! — I also tried an experiment with my phone while we were there this time. No mindless scrolling and staring at the screen. I only took out my phone when I absolutely needed, which I only did to take some pictures.

I was inspired to do this after watching The Social Dilemma on Netflix the other day. It’s about social media and how it’s changed our lives for better and worse.

I thought about it when I saw a group of people at an exhibit, all with their phones out. They were all recording a hippo happily pushing around a gigantic ball, and I couldn’t help but wonder how many of the people were really in the moment. I dunno… It felt very Black Mirror!

Not gonna lie…it was hard to resist recording that hella cute hippo. For serious! Also, I really didn’t realize how much of an unconscious habit it is for me to quickly check my emails or texts messages or see what’s happening on the ‘gram. I really do waste a lot of time doing a whole lotta nothing while staring at my phone screen…

A map of the zoo

I’m going to stick with limiting my phone time, though. Hopefully this will allow me to be more present when I’m with my friends and family when we’re together.

Product Spotlight: $10 Honest Beauty Liquid EyeLiner

October 1st, 2020 by Karen 9 Comments

honest beauty liquid eyeliner
Long lasting, intensely pigmented and easy to apply

Dude, this long-lasting black liquid liner is SO GOOD, and it’s only 10 bucks at honest.com!

How do I love thee, Honest Beauty Liquid Eyeliner? Let me count the ways…

1. Concentrated

Despite the fact that it only comes in a single matte black shade, it’s deep and dark like the most gorgeous black cat coat, and it doesn’t have any blue undertones at all.

2. Durable

It isn’t quite waterproof, but it’s very water resistant and long lasting (also doesn’t transfer). I’ve been wearing it all summer long.

3. Flawless

It comes in a tube with a wand that has a long, flexible felt tip that’s absolutely foolproof to use. The wand is just the right length to perfectly cradle in my paw, and the dainty felt tip draws crisp thick and thin lines equally well. Normally, I wouldn’t even think of drawing with liquid liner when I’m rushing through a fast face, but I can do it with this one.

A matte deep black

4. Flexible

Thin lines, thick lines, dainty flicks, big ol’ bat wings — it can do it all.

And if you love diffused edges like I do (no harsh lines, baby!), the formula is easy to smudge, too. Just be sure to do your smudging before it sets, which takes about 30 seconds for skinny lines and a minute for thick ones.

INGREDIENTS:
Water (Aqua), Alcohol Denat., Glycerin, Pullulan, Disodium Coco-Glucoside Citrate, Hectorite, Xanthan Gum, Citric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Iron Oxides (CI 77499), Ferric Ammonium Ferrocyanide (CI 77510).

5. Swift

Also, as if it needed even more going for it, the fast-setting formula won’t creep up into your crease when you blink!

What a gem for only $10! I’m going to wish upon a star for Honest Beauty to add a few more colors, as I would LOVE a dark brown option (a liquid version of MAC Coffee would be my Disney princess dream come true) — ooh! — and a gray for everyday looks.

Q & A: What’s Your Go-To Fall Beauty Item?

September 30th, 2020 by Karen 23 Comments

I don’t know about you, but today I need civil discourse, and I promise I won’t interrupt you. What’s your go-to fall beauty item? Is it a dark lipstick? Your favorite cream shadow for smokey lids? A particularly vampy nail polish? A regal, rich perfume?

For me, it’s a dark lipstick… Actually, all of the dark lipsticks! Berry, brown, red. Even though I mostly only wear them around the house these days, I still love a good fall lip color.

How about you? What’s your go-to fall beauty item?

FOTD: Fall Vibes With Plum Lids and Berry Lips

September 29th, 2020 by Karen 7 Comments

mac prunella got a callback
Fall is a berry good time to wear dark berry lips!

Hiya! On this stop on our tour of MAC Eyeliner Greatest Hits is Prunella! AHHH!

In my opinion, it is one of the very best things in the entire MAC world.

Boom. There, I said.

In a nutshell, it’s a purple eyeliner…but not just any purple liner. It’s a deep blackened plum with a hint of shine to softly define your lash and water lines in ways a basic black liner just can’t do.

I’m wearing Prunella here as a one-and-done lid and lash line color. It’s a little smoked out and a little smudgy, which is my favorite way to wear it.

Prunella is a perfect perennial product, but I think it kicks major rear in fall when it’s paired with berry lipsticks, and it turns out that there are two great new berry shades in the MAC Powderkiss Liquid Lipcolour fam. Here I’m wearing Got a Callback, a mid-toned berry mauve; and Burning Love, a straight-up berry. Both have a soft matte finish that complements Prunella’s soft shine well.

Fall vibes: MAC Powderkiss Liquid Lipsticks in Burning Love (a berry) and Got a Callback (a mid-toned mauve berry)

And because I can’t resist wearing pink lips with everything (!), I threw on a pink lip to see how it would look with these eyes… Definitely skews the makeup to a springier vibe.

If you’re into the pink, FYI, it’s Charlotte Tilbury’s iconic Pillow Talk lip liner and lipstick topped with Hourglass Fever lipgloss.

Speaking of Charlotte Tilbury, if you’re in a “bougie blush mood” (because they happen, LOL!), I highly suggest checking out her Ecstasy blush. It’s the one with a peachy outer ring and a pink inner ring. When you blend the two together, you get this perfect balance of a neutral pink with a slightly warm peach. It’s not too warm or cool, and it goes surprisingly well with most looks — especially plummy and purple lids and lips like this.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 645

September 28th, 2020 by Karen 33 Comments

good vibes only mug
Yes, please!

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. ?

    1. Dark chocolate, milk chocolate or white chocolate?

Dark chocolate tastes like punishment to me…and white chocolate doesn’t really taste like much at all, so I’ll take some really good milk chocolate for the win, please! See’s preferably! ??

    2. Would you like winged liner with a matte finish, or a shiny finish today?

I’ll go for shiny today. ✨

    3. Something you’re putting off at the moment?

Cleaning my bathroom… I’ve got to do it soon (hopefully this week) because it’s on the brink of true grossness! Not quite full-on disgusting yet, but it’s getting there.

    4. A weird beauty-related pet peeve of yours?

I absolutely cannot stand when my hair smells like barbecue. YUCK! Also, when my toenails or fingernails are even just a tad too long, I’m basically non-functional. I can’t think about anything other than cutting my nails when they get like that, and I’ll obsess over it until it’s done.

    5. Who’s your dream travel partner?

Besides Keanu Reeves? El Hub, I guess. LOL! He’s very detail oriented, so I know that even if I’m completely out of it (like if it’s 3 a.m.
and I’m delirious from lack of sleep), and there’s a train or a connecting flight we absolutely cannot miss, I know we’ll get to where we need to go with all the paperwork and everything ready to go.

Plus, homeboy’s pretty funny. He’s always available for a hug if I need one and is always up for an adventure… And I’m also going to have to include my childhood friends Jen and Cindy, who I still hang out with. I’ve traveled extensively with them over the years, and we haven’t killed each other yet, haha! They’re both super easygoing, which is yin to my yang.

    6. Who’s always on your playlist?

Honestly, these days it’s always one of the Disney princesses, hahaha! Connor loves Disney movies and music, so I like to have Disney princess tunes available to play at a moment’s notice in case she feels the need to bust out into song.

    7. What’s something you learned about makeup in the last few years that really surprised you?

That brown eyeliner is your BFF!

    8. What does your afternoon look like today?

Got a few errands to run and a couple things to write, but otherwise not terribly busy if I’m mindful of the time and stay on task.

    9. What’s the name you put on your Starbucks order?

I use ‘Karen’ most of the time, but there are those rare days when I can’t deal with someone writing ‘Kelvin’ or ‘Kerran’ or ‘Kiera,’ so I end up giving my nickname, which is Kate.

Nobody seems to mess up Kate for some reason!

    Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

    Karen

P.S. Here are the questions to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to ya soon.

    1. Dark chocolate, milk chocolate, or white chocolate?
    2. Would you like winged liner with a matte or shiny finish today?
    3. Something you’re putting off at the moment?
    4. A weird beauty-related pet peeve of yours?
    5. Who’s your dream travel partner?
    6. Who’s always on your playlist?
    7. What’s something you learned about makeup in the last few years that really surprised you?
    8. What does your afternoon look like today?
    9. What’s the name you put on your Starbucks order?

P.P.S. You’re going to have a great day, my friend. I just know it! ?

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 626

September 27th, 2020 by Karen 8 Comments

Tabs got along with almost everyone.

Almost, with the exception of a few people and cats, including his corporate nemesis Harris, who staged a hostile takeover attempt of Tabs the Cat Industries, LLC a few years ago.

It failed, of course. Tabs adeptly defended his ownership of the company by purchasing all of the outstanding shares from the other members of the board of cat directors (didn’t hurt that he also sent them care packages of canned tuna in gravy).

Even though he’d been defeated, Harris never let up. He continued to torment Tabs for years, often attempting to sneak onto company property. Luckily, Tabs was always here to protect it.

When Tabs passed away last year, we thought Harris would give up and set his sights on a new corporate conquest.

But apparently that was wishful thinking…

Rosie to Harris, “Get off our property!”

Rosie and I have been going for walks on Sunday mornings now, like Tabs and I used to.

She doesn’t take corporate security quite as seriously as Tabs did. She’s more into exploring and getting the lay of the land, nibbling on grass shoots and keeping an eye on the local turkeys.

But guess who showed up this morning?

Yup, Harris.

And Rosie wasn’t having any of it. She made it clear right away that Tabs the Cat Industries, LLC was still off limits, and he would have to move along.

I don’t know if he got the message, but I hope so. She made it loud and clear.

Saturday Surfing, Sep. 26, 2020

September 26th, 2020 by Karen 5 Comments

Rise and shine, morning glory! Good morning! I may or may not have just ingested what may, technically, be described as a dessert for breakfast, and while part of me feels like I shouldn’t tell you about this cake from Trader Joe’s because its health benefits are…beyond questionable, another part of me does because it’s SO DANG DELICIOUS.

I don’t know what’s going on with this brownie pumpkin blondie confection, but it’s crazy addictive. It’s so good that you have to close your eyes when you take a bite. It’s that serious!

If a pumpkin cake met a carrot cake that met a white chocolate/slash pecan fantasy, this would be their progeny. Like…I’m not normally into white chocolate chips, but I’m all over them in this. Normally, I’m not a fan of chocolate and pumpkin together, but they are WORKIN’ here.

Mmm… The crumb is so light it just melts in your mouth. Perfect with a cup of hot coffee.

So, yeah! You’ll either love me or hate me because I told you about this. ? Or, maybe you’ll love AND hate me, hahaha! Now I realize why this was the last box on the shelf when I saw it at TJ’s. People are addicted!

Anyhow…I hope you’re eating cake for breakfast this morning, even if it isn’t this one. Here are your beauty stories for the week. 🙂

  • Which of these makeup looks from London Fashion Week Spring 2021 would you wear?
  • Your two new Lenny Kravitz fun facts for this week: 1) he’s the new face of a new perfume by YSL, and 2) he uses sand from the ocean to exfoliate his skin.
  • Eight skin care products with oatmeal to soothe your itchy, dry skin.
  • 19 Black-owned beauty brands to put on your radar.
  • Do you see any of your cold-weather skin care essentials on this best-of beauty list?
  • Just in case you’re looking for a list of vitamin C serums for correcting dark spots!
  • Meet Lasagna the cat, a shapely 29-pound (!) kitty from Philly who just found her fur-ever home.
  • Do you think your kitty has what it takes to become a therapy cat?
  • Experts say that it takes a while to foster feline friendships between kitties.
  • A brief history of styling Black stars in Hollywood
  • Here’s what you need to know about toner, according to a dermatologist.
  • There isn’t a lot of diversity among perfumers in the fragrance industry.

Why cats love boxes, according to science!

What sorcery is this?

???

So soothing…

Note to self…

I’m ready for you, baby Yoda,

Just in case your cat needs to chill-the-eff out

Gorgeous

So I’m working on my yard yet again this weekend. It’s the neverending story of my life right now, but it’s almost done. We put down the white marble chips last week, so this is the home stretch. Now I have to track down a big blue ceramic pot for a lemon tree and look at pavers… #adulting!

What you got going on today? Besides eating cake for breakfast?!

Brand Spotlight: Bossy Cosmetics

September 25th, 2020 by Karen 4 Comments

Feeling Bossy! I’m wearing Bossy Cosmetics Liquid Matte Lipstick in Sexy

Bossy Cosmetics is a new cruelty-free Black-owned indie makeup line of lip products that caters to all skin tones. I’m a fan, especially of the lipgloss!

Do you know the Kelis tune, “I’m Bossy?” It’s practically my theme song, ha ha ha!

If you’ve ever been called bossy by your friends and family, you’ll probably get a kick out of this.

Hues for bossy gals of all shades

Bossy Cosmetics cruelty-free, vegan line of lip products launched in 2019, so they’re pretty new. The founder, Aisha, is a mom of three and a self-proclaimed “lipstick junkie” who worked in investment banking before starting the brand with the intent to 1) help women feel beautiful, and 2) pay it forward, as part of the proceeds go toward charities that support women and girls.

Inclusivity is one of their main pillars, so you’ll find colors for all skin tones and ethnicities.

Prices range from $16.99 for a liquid lipstick, to $13.99 for a lip liner, to $14.99 for a gloss and $18.99 for a lip/eye/cheek glitter, so they’re pricier than Revlon or Neutrogena, but slightly less than MAC.

bossy cosmetics
Sexy Liquid Lipstick, Shiraz Gloss and Rush Lip Pencil

Take me back to the ’90s, please

I’ve tried a few of their items, including a lipgloss, liquid lipstick and a lip pencil, and I’m impressed! IMO the makeup is on par with MAC.

  • Liquid Matte Lipstick in Sexy: This O.G. ’90s-style flat matte brown takes me back to my college days! It’s warm with a slight hint of red (but the red isn’t as present as MAC Paramount or Revlon Rum Raisin). The texture’s a light-as-air mousse, so you can lead it to the corners of your Cupid’s bow exactly where you want it to go… Smells a little like cocoa butter at first, and I kind of want to eat it, LOL! (Don’t do that, though.) Very faint sugar cookie flavor. A little goes a long way, and the product completely coats my lips without settling into horizontal lip lines.
  • Hydra Gloss in Shiraz: This semi-sheer pearly mauve-pink feels like one of the revamped MAC Lipglasses. It’s thick, so it’s THERE and you know it. It’s not sticky, though, and it’s pretty moisturizing too. I get a faint sugar cookie flavor, but it’s not all up in your grill. If you’re like me and nude, glossy and lips are your thing, Shiraz is a color you’ll reach for all the time.
  • Lip Pencil in Rush: A high-pigment matte rosy pink that glides across lips without tugging. Contains shea butter for moisture!
