Current Makeup Wish List

June 9th, 2020 by Karen 28 Comments

 current makeup wish list

I haven’t gone makeup shopping in person in months, which is probably no surprise to anyone reading this. Adding things to my online carts and leaving them there for weeks until I pull the trigger will have to suffice for now, I guess.

Currently percolating on my lust list…

Bossy Cosmetics Power Woman Essentials Collection

This collection of liquid lipsticks will be launching soon, and the colors teased on Insta look gorgeous! I love rose gold packaging, too…

Uoma Say What?! Foundation, $39

Lots of shades in this base range (51!). I’m interested in seeing how the “blurring technology to minimize pores” works!

Beauty Bakerie Neopolitan Bar and Brown Bar Mini Blush Palettes, $18 each

As a former professional baker (for, like, two seconds, LOL!), all the baking-inspired packaging and the foodie names in this line speak to my soul *and* my sweet tooth. These blush trios look like something I could wear every day.

Danessa Myricks Beauty Colorfix 24-Hour Cream Color Mattes, $18 each

These long-wearing matte creams work on eyes, lips and cheeks. I want some bright pinks and corals for cheeks and lips (and maybe the occasional crazy eye look), and a few of the neutral browns and peaches for the every stuff.

Coloured Raine Call the Shots Highlighter/Blush Duo, $12.50

“I don’t need to fall in love with a limited edition blush duo. I don’t need to fall in love with a limited edition blush duo. I don’t need to fall in love with a limited edition blush duo.”

Yeah, keep telling yourself that, babe!

A friend of mine, Joey, recommended this line, especially these blushes, which are now on sale. This one looks so good, though. There’s a vivid coral on one side and a deep peachy copper on the other.

Coloured Raine Eyeshadow Singles, $6.99

The matte and satin browns look especially delicious: Gingerbread, Hot Cocoa, Moments and S’mores.

Of course I would want the ones that sound like food! ?

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 630

June 8th, 2020 by Karen 23 Comments

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. ?

Hi, my friend. As I’m sure you’re aware, because you’re probably living it and seeing it like I am, there’s a great deal of uncertainty and unrest around us in the world right now. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, angry, saddened, off-kilter and/or concerned about the future, you are not alone.

Every day, I try to do something to brighten the world around me a little. Sometimes it’s nothing. Maybe one extra smile or a compliment to a neighbor, but I feel like every gesture gives a little nudge in a positive direction.

I’ve always liked to think that the silly questions in the Monday Poll spread some positive energy, and I hope they brighten your day a little. This is installment #630, which is incredible!

Take care of yourself and your loved ones. Please remember, you’re doing great. Hang in there, OK?

    1. Hot rollers or a curling iron?

Curling iron — large barrel, preferably by GHD (they’re $$$ but so good).

    2. Scrunchie or hand cream?

    Hand cream. Hands down.

    3. Would you rather wear crop tops for the rest of your life, or wear capri pants for the rest of your life?

Crop tops, because capri pants and I don’t mix (lesson learned the hard way).

    4. Have you ever clogged the shower drain with your hair?

HECK YEAH. The worst was in the last apartment I lived in. It took forever for the poor maintenance guy to get through the pipe, and when he was finally able to, he pulled out a massive ball of hair.

I was strongly encouraged to purchase a hair trap after that…

    5. Low, middle or high bun?

High bun. The messier, the better.

    6. When you get your hair cut next (whenever that is!), what style are you going to do?

It’s been over a year… I need to serious choppity-chop-chop! I’ll probably end up with a lob, and I know I’ll regret it immediately afterward and start growing my hair again, ha ha ha!

    7. Colorful brows or green lipstick?

    Colorful brows.

    8. High pony or sleek french twist?

    High pony! (Fewer hair pins.)

    9. Would you rather have free lipstick or free nail polish for the rest of your life?

    THIS IS TOUGH… Lipstick.

    10. Bronzer or eyeshadow?

    Eyeshadow

    11. Lip stain or eyeliner?

    Eyeliner

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Here are the questions to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to ya soon.

1. Hot rollers or a curling iron?
2. Scrunchie or hand cream?
3. Would you rather wear crop tops for the rest of your life, or wear capri pants for the rest of your life?
4. Have you ever clogged the shower drain with your hair?
5. Low, middle or high bun?
6. When you get your hair cut next (whenever that is!), what style are you going to do?
7. Colorful brows or green lipstick?
8. High pony or sleek french twist?
9. Would you rather have free lipstick or free nail polish for the rest of your life?
10. Bronzer or eyeshadow?
11. Lip stain or eyeliner?

P.P.S. Hope you’re having a nice day so far. ?

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 610

June 7th, 2020 by Karen 7 Comments

Rosie isn’t the fashion mogul Tabs was, but she does have style, and she’s really been feeling herself lately.

Tabs had more of an appetite for haute cature than Rosie does, and he changed style almost daily. He would go from wearing a bright ’80s off-the-shoulder tee with ripped jeans to posing in the nude wearing nothing but jewelry. He was fearless with fashion, but that was his thing, whereas Rosie’s true passion is science.

happy saturday girls club on couch
Happy Saturday!

Hi, friend! Happy Caturday. To get your weekend started right, here’s a shot of my torbie girl’s toebeans:

torbie toebeans
That pink toebean tho!

I’ve made it my mission in life to accurately capture the colors of her toebeans in pics, because, quite frankly, they’re pawsome. The bottom of her feet are calico! How cute is that!?

Speaking of my girls, this week Connor Claire had one last “hurrah” with her former classmates from the honeybee class at preschool.

coycoy preschool celebration
Coycoy with her teachers, who are the best.

They held a social distance graduation for the four-year-old class in the parking lot, and gosh…it’s amazing how fast kids grow at this age. They all look so different than they did a few months ago! The girls who had long hair have even longer hair now, and everyone looks taller.

Preschools and summer camps are starting to reopen here now, but El Hub and I still aren’t sure what to do or how to handle it. Like so many families across the country, we’re weighing the risks and our own family circumstances. It’s hard to plan when there are so many things out of your control.

Sigh… Just taking things one day at a time.

On a lighter note…I tried a new dinner recipe for sheet pan baked sweet and sour meatballs, and the fam LOVED it. 🙂 Connor kindly offered her sous chef expertise by mixing the sweet-and-sour sauce and rolling the meatballs! If you’re looking for an easy dinner you can make with a little one, this one’s perfect. VERY KID FRIENDLY!

sweet and sour meatballs
Yummy

The dish was so good that I forgot to take a snapshot beforehand, LOL! I ate my meatballs with Trader Joe’s Riced Cauliflower Stir Fry, and El Hub and Connor had it with white rice. I’m going to make some more today and double the recipe so I can freeze some for later.

  • Puig, the Spanish company behind Paco Rabanne perfumes, just spent $1.5 billion dollars to acquire a majority stake in Charlotte Tilbury makeup. I wonder how this will effect the line, which is one of my faves!
  • A brief history of the makeup looks that defined rock and metal music. (Insert head bang right *here*.)
  • Never thought I’d ever type this sentence: How to adjust your makeup routine when wearing a face mask.
  • After I read this article — “A Scented Diary of a Lockdown” — in The New York Times, I walked into my bathroom, grabbed EL Hub’s Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue, and doused myself with it. LOL! Then I planned my perfumes for the rest of the week.
  • Should you keep perfume in the fridge?
  • If you’re looking to do a little shopping in the near future, may I suggest putting one of these 68 black-owned fashion and beauty brands on your radar? Or, perhaps one of the businesses on this list of 25 black-owned beauty and fashion brands?
  • Don’t forget to bookmark this list of 10 black-owned nail polish brands while you’re at it (note to self).
  • Speaking of nail polish, these brands are supposed to be some of the sturdiest around.
  • Skin care products to avoid if you’re going to attend a protest.

PRESS PLAY. You will not regret it.

Lots of things to learn here

Stevie 4 ever

YES

Patti, you’re a gem.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, my friend. I hope you’re able to recharge your batteries.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

5 Things I’ve Been Loving Lately

June 5th, 2020 by Karen 14 Comments

1. Printed leggings

I recently got these snake print leggings from Athleta on sale , and they’ve convinced me that, if one is committed to living life in stretchy pants, prints are the way to go!

Why? Because if you actually work out in ’em, prints hide sweat stains better than solid color leggings do. I’ve also recently discovered that prints do a better job of 1) hiding any wayward food stains and 2) underwear lines. If you’re as committed to wearing granny panties as I am, then you understand the significance of the latter.

2. THIS SANDWICH!

I am deeply enamored with this cheese, veggie and hummus sandwich.

So yummy, so satisfying, and so easy to make. You can have a meal on your plate in five minutes!

The beauty of this sammie is that you can tweak it. If you want to add a protein, add a few slices of turkey, or bacon, or turkey bacon, or both kinds of bacon. If you don’t like hummus? Substitute it for smashed avocado or spinach dip.

It’s just two slices of your favorite bread, cucumber slices (sliced lengthwise and cut thin), tomato slices, two tablespoons or more of hummus, a slice or two of sharp or medium cheddar cheese and a handful of greens.

Also, to make this sandwich all it can be, you need to do three things:

  1. Dress your greens! If you skip this step, then your sammie will taste like depressing rabbit food. Whatever greens and salad dressing you have on hand are good, just as long as you like it. I do a handful of spinach tossed with a teaspoon or two of Trader Joe’s Pear and Gorgonzola Dressing.
  2. Add a pinch of salt and pepper to the sliced cucumber and tomato. Yup, this adds more flavor. I just stack the veggies, then sprinkle a little on top. If you’re trying to cut down on salt, then a salt-free spice mix works, too.
  3. Choose a flavored hummus. Plain hummus totally works, but if you can find a flavored one, that’s even better. My fave is roasted red pepper.

My body also feels really good after I eat veggies, ya know?

3. Sweet Magnolias

I marathoned this entire Neflix series in three days, and once I finished the last episode, I immediately started re-watching it again. It’s like Gilmore Girls meets Virgin River, and it’s so good! The main characters are three lifelong friends who live in a small town called Serenity, and the show takes you through the ups and downs they experience while starting their own spa in town.

The show seems kinda old-fashioned in that the dialogue’s slower-paced than most modern dramas. The plots also focus on people actually trying to do the right thing and making choices that, you know, help themselves and the people around them, rather than celebrating cattiness and backstabbing. Sure, it’s a little cheesy…but it’s also refreshing. Who’d a thunk it? — a show that isn’t all about destructive friendships and relationships.

4. First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream

It’s thick and rich but doesn’t leave my face or neck feeling greasy, and it layers beautifully with serums and makeup. A big-ol’ 6-oz. tub of this super hydrating face cream is $34! It’s made for all skin types, even kids and babies.

first aid beauty ultra repair cream
My dry/oily/acne-prone skin loves this stuff.

5. Making a meal for the freezer

Lately, whenever I cook dinner, I try to make enough for an extra meal I can freeze and defrost at a later date. This works especially great with meals where you pour a sauce on top of pasta or rice!

Last week I made spaghetti sauce, and when I was done, I took an empty gallon-sized freezer bag, put it inside a bowl for stability, and filled it with the sauce. Once it was full, I removed as much air as I could from the bag, sealed it up, and placed it on a baking sheet, which I then stuck in my freezer. Doing this freezes the bag flat, making it easier to store.

Product Spotlight: Covergirl Full Spectrum So Saturated Eyeshadow Palette in Reverence

June 4th, 2020 by Karen 6 Comments

covergirl reverence palette swatches
For my budget beauty babes who love warm shades.

We live in unprecedented, crazy times, don’t we? That is the UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE CENTURY. I find myself unconsciously shaking my head in surreal disbelief all the time. So much of what we’ve been seeing lately — and by lately I’m going back way further than this month — does not compute. How many times have you caught yourself saying, “I never thought I’d ever see…”? Shock and confusion describe how I feel every day…

While its importance pales in comparison to the health, safety, economic and social issues now, makeup for me is a safe place. It’s frivolous, simple, and it’s a lot easier to solve.

My take on makeup at this time: if something’s good, that’s great, and if it’s good and affordable, that’s even better. Covergirl’s cruelty-free neutral Reverence eyeshadow palette ticks most of the boxes. For $13, you get a mini warm-toned drugstore version of the O.G. Urban Decay Naked palette. It comes with eight powder eyeshadows. On my 40-something combo skin lids, they last all day long, so no touchups required, because who has time to reapply shadow during a global pandemic? Certainly not this girl. I’m too busy pulling up my stretchy pants and baking lemon bars.

Covergirl So Saturated Palette in Reverence k front closeup
That’s Reverence in action on my lids.

I’ve been wearing the mattes in this palette a lot! This is one of those palettes where you can pretty much pick any two or three shades and whip out a complete look with barely any help from your blending brushes. You can apply the shadows with a wet or dry brush, but remember to tap off the excess product from your brushes before blending, because the shadows are on the fluffy side.

Ingredients:
Mica, Talc, Caprylic,Capric Triglyceride. Dimethicone. Magnesium Stearate, Nylon. 12, Silica, Boron Nitride, Paraffin, Isostearyl Alcohol, Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Mineral Oiuhuile Minérale/Paraffinum Liquidum, Sorbitan Isostearate. Tocopheryl Acetate, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Sodium Dehydroacetate. Microcrystalline Wax/Cire Microcristalline/Cera Microcristallina, Tin Oxide, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, [May Contain/Peut Contenir/+/-: Iron Oxides (CI 77499, CI 77491 , CI 77492), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891). Ultramarines (CI 77007), Carmine (CI 75470), Manganese Violet (CI 77742), Blue 1 Lake (CI 42090), Yellow 5 Lake (CI 19140), Ferric Ferrocyanide (CI 77510)].

Also, take it easy on the metallics, because they’re borderline frosty, and they will highlight fine lines. I stick to wearing the bronze, taupe and gold, which I use as eyeliner doing thin lines, and that works for me.

covergirl reverence palette swatches

Reverence is one of four color combos in the So Saturated Eyeshadow Palette Line. If neutrals aren’t your thing, there’s also Posh, which is a blend of burgundy tones; Gravity, a mix of smokey grays; and Zodiac, a bevy of brights. You can find all of them at drugstores and Ulta.

Drugstore Makeup Look: ’90s-Inspired Plummy Pink!

June 3rd, 2020 by Karen 20 Comments

Let me be the first person to say that my hair looks absolutely BONKERS in these pics, and that’s even AFTER trying to actually do something with it.

I am one YouTube video away from hacking it off! Note to self: next time a global pandemic approaches, book a hair appointment before the world shuts down.

Sigh… Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, I was thinking about a Monday Poll question from a while back (’80s or ’90s?) before I started doing my makeup, which is how this ’90s-inspired plummy pink look came about. Everything I’m using is drugstore makeup because I’m still riding a may-jah budget beauty wave right now.

A drugstore dupe for an iconic ’90s lipstick

My main inspiration was an old-school ’90s standby that’s still around called Clinique Black Honey Lipstick. It’s a sheer, ever-so-slightly shiny lippie that all of my college friends wore back in the day. There used to be a Clinique counter inside the UC Davis bookstore, and every quarter when it came time to buy books, we’d all go to that counter to get our books so we could avoid the regular long lines. The only thing you had to do to use that line was buy at least one piece of Clinique makeup, which is how every girl I knew ended up with countless tubes of Black Honey.

Anywho…I recently found a drugstore dupe for it in Honest Beauty Plum Drop Lip Tint, and it looks exactly like Black Honey! To keep with the plum theme, I paired it with an awesomely affordable plummy-pink eyeshadow palette I found over at Covergirl, and pink cream blush cheeks (which I did with a Revlon lipstick).

Covergirl So Saturated Eye Palette in Posh is so good!

The palette is the Full Spectrum So Saturated Eye Shadow Palette in Posh, which comes with eight powder eyeshadows in pink, plum and burgundy tones. The powders are on the fluffier side, so there’s definitely some fallout if you aren’t careful and forget to remove any excess from your brush head, but, on the flip side, the colors are rich and practically blend themselves.

Just a few wrist flicks and you’re good. These are long lasting too. I wear mine without a primer, and it’ll last the day. Posh is $13.49 over at Ulta, if you’re interested.

That layered liner life

To break up all the pink and plum tones, I layered two liners on my upper and lower waterline — a matte black and a sparkly purple. The purple didn’t really show up on its own, which is why I drew the black liner on first, then layered the purple on top. If you ever have a liner that doesn’t deposit as much pigment as you’d like, starting with a layer of black liner beneath it is the fastest way to ramp up the intensity. You can also do this trick with white liner, by the way!

Product Spotlight: Urban Decay Inked Brow

June 2nd, 2020 by Karen 3 Comments

urban decay inked brow
There’s a new line of long-wearing brow gels from Urban Decay!

This cruelty-free vegan brow-filling gel is pigmented and lasts a loooong time. If you’re a fan of Make Up For Ever Aqua Brow, you’ll like this too. Inked Brow comes in seven $26 shades and is available now at UD counters and online.

Things I’ve done to dislodge Urban Decay Inked Brows from my face: 1) Chased a preschooler while they sprinted and splashed in rain puddles. 2) Grunted, thrusted and sweated (get yo’ mind out of the gutter) through a 1-hour booty building HIIT workout. 3) Sang Just What I Needed over and over for 10 minutes in the shower.

ALL FUTILE ATTEMPTS, MIND YOU.

This line of long-wearing brow gels is built to last. Urban Decay even goes so far as to call it “semi-permanent” and claims it lasts up to 60 hours (with the caveat that you need to refrain from washing your brows for three days… Who does that?!).

urban decay inked brow neutral nana
The shade Neutral Nana over the course of one day

It’s like hella pigmented maple syrup for your brows, except that it isn’t sticky and you can’t eat it…so please refrain!

My point is that the viscous formula makes it better for adding color to brows than for molding and shaping. If you’ve got mad scientist brows, you might require the help of an additional brow gel to hold everything in place.

urban decay inked brow brush
Closeup of the brush

Before engaging in the aforementioned shenanigans, I painted it on my bare brow spots using the angled brush it comes with, then ran a brow brush through my brows a few times.

(Do not skip the latter step, or you risk being mistaken for a pirate!)

urban decay inked brows dark drapes neutral nana
Two of the seven shades

I have no desire to leave any product in my brows for three days…but if I did, this would be that product.

Remember — if you decide to use this, don’t use too much, and brush, brush, brush through your brows with a brow brush.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
