Makeup Storage Solution Idea #1, Sears Craftsman

December 4th, 2007 by Karen 29 Comments

sears-craftsman-makeup-storage-solution

My makeup collection is a little out of control. There are blushes on my desk, palettes in random bathroom drawers and lip liner in all the wrong places (I just found my Honey B. Cremestick liner, which was MIA for weeks, in my car the other day!). Makeup is quickly threatening to take over my existence.

For the past few months I’ve been storing stuff in Sterilite plastic craft drawers located in different rooms at home. I like that the drawers are cheap and easy to clean, but I’d still like to be able to keep it all in one central place. I was cruising Sears a few weeks ago, ’cause I had to buy some vacuum bags, and found a possible solution to the ever-increasing makeup madness: a Craftsman rolling tool chest! It’s tall, has several long, shallow drawers (perfect for eye shadow pans and palettes) and has enough storage room to hold everything.

Unfortunately, it’s a few hundred bucks, ugly, and really doesn’t match my bedroom furniture. Trust me, if I had a place to store this away, like a huge walk-in closet, I’d have this bad boy filled to the brim with makeup. The quest for more makeup storage continues, sigh.

How do you store your makeup? Help your girl out, please!

smashbox-cosmetics-makeup-platinum-surge

Palm trees, tropical breezes, white sand beaches: I wish I could ditch this cold, rainy weather for a quick winter getaway to someplace warm like Australia, Tahiti or Maldives.

Calgon take me away … to Maldives.

national-geographic-photo-maldives

Whether or not you’re one of those lucky ladies bound for a tropical vacation this holiday, don’t leave home without the Smashbox Platinum Surge makeup kit. With its four fab products, your minimal vacation makeup needs are covered. You’ll look good whether you’re sipping pina coladas at the beach bar or dancing the night away in your living room at home.

Eye Shadow Quad in Smolder – pearl, gold, cocoa and plum
Fusion Soft Lights Palette (this is a highlighter/cheek color) in Glisten – deep bronze, gold, warm pink and tan
Moonbeam lipgloss – shimmery muted pink
Starlight lipgloss – clear with silver shimmer

The products in the kit have a light color payoff and very subtle sparkle. It may not appeal to hard core makeup junkies who prefer concentrated color, but I like it because when I’m on vacation I don’t like wearing heavy, high maintenance makeup. At the most I’ll wear waterproof mascara, a light wash of eye shadow on the lids, lipgloss and a touch of bronzer. The Platinum Surge kit has all I need to achieve that perfect touch of color!

Everything comes in a sleek, silver case you can easily throw into a beach tote. Now, head to the beach, girl, before I tackle you and steal your plane ticket!

Vacation, all I ever wanted

Does anyone else have vacation on their mind? Where would you go?

I’m trying a little something new with the blog today — smaller posts throughout the day — just to mix it up, so please check back later! 🙂

Lancome Bi-Facil Eye Makeup Remover Review

December 3rd, 2007 by Karen 29 Comments

Bow Down!

I’m not one who usually falls for product hype but damn, Lancome Bi-Facil is good. I’m talking fresh brownies, extra sleep and Christian Bale in a tuxedo good. So good that peasants gotta bow down and shake before the mighty baby blue bottle! So good that … Okay, okay. You get the picture.

Fear Bi-Facil’s wrath

lancome-makeup-cosmetics-bi-facil-eye-makeup-remover-final

WOOT-A-RAMA!

I picked up a bottle of Bi-Facil on a whim when I popped by the Lancome counter in Union Square to see my favorite Lancome artist, Erin, who is not only a sweet person, but also a fierce brow shaper. Yes, it killed me a bit to throw down the $24.00, but this stuff works, and you barely have to use any of it, just a few drops, to remove even waterproof mascara.

It doesn’t leave me with overly slimy lids like Almay pads. No cloudy vision, either, which was the alarming side effect of Neutrogena’s Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover.

Even the toughest of eye makeup challenges — Fluidline, MAX Factor 2000 Calorie Waterproof Mascara, MAC Paints — slips off easily. No tugging, no sliminess, nada. I give Bi-Facil a few good shakes, put three drops on a cotton pad and then whoomp, there it is, two buck naked eyelids in a few swipes.

I know the $24.00 price tag is a bit tough to swallow, but, because you only need to use a few drops, a bottle should last a while. I wear eye makeup every day and guess that one bottle will last me between four and six months, which breaks down to about $4-$6 per month.

I like it so much and think it could even replace my former holy grail eye makeup remover, Sephora FACE. This might be true love!

Speaking o’ lurve

Have you seen Enchanted, the new Disney movie with Patrick Dempsey and Amy Adams? I was feeling pretty junk this weekend, but seeing Enchanted lifted my spirit. Now I feel so much better. You can’t go wrong with Disney. It’s a live-action, romantic comedy musical that plays on the Disney princess theme. Just so funny and sweet.

Team McDreamy!

enchanted-movie-poster

I can’t wait to add it to my cheesy movie list (Brown Sugar, Knotting Hill, My Best Friend’s Wedding) once it comes out on DVD. If you’re in the mood for a happy, curl-up-on-the-couch-on-a-rainy-day kinda movie, check it out.

MAC Viva Glam Lipstick Palettes, a Fab Gift Idea for $25.00

December 2nd, 2007 by Karen 14 Comments

G-L-A-M … O-R … O-U-S!

MAC Viva Glam, you rule. Your lipstick colors work on all shades of skin and you always have the coolest spokespeople (love ya, Dita!).

Buy a lipstick, change a life. Is it that easy?

Well, yes. Every cent of the sale proceeds from MAC Viva Glam goes to the MAC AIDS Fund.

This holiday season MAC’s Viva Glamorous Compacts give you the chance to sample these universally flattering shades and help support a fantastic cause.

Two palettes, each with three Viva Glam classics, await your lovely lips.

You can work the Warm Lips palette:

MAC Viva Glam V Lustre Lipstick – neutral pink with pearl
MAC Viva Glam V Lipglass – neutral pink with pearl
MAC Viva Glam VI Lustre Lipstick – warm terracotta-plum fusion with subtle pearl

Or, rock the Cool Lips palette:

MAC Viva Glam II Satin Lipstick – muted pinkish-beige with subtle shimmer
MAC Viva Glam IV Frost Lipstick – mid-tone rose with a subtle gold shimmer
MAC Viva Glam VI Lipglass – warm plum with multi-reflective, multi-dimensional pearl

Each palette costs $25.00. I love them both, but if you’re a hard-working student or a budget-minded beauty then opt for the Warm Lips palette to get Viva Glam V. I’ve seen the color on so many different women and it always looks great.

I’m feeling a little better today. Blast you common cold (*sniff*)! I’m off to slurp some chicken soup. Don’t forget to take your vitamin C, ya’ll!

10 Ways to Winter-proof Your Hair

December 1st, 2007 by Karen 26 Comments

I’ve always been jealous of girls with wash and wear hair. When they toss their mane and it glistens from across the room, boys turn their heads, the clouds part, angels sing, blah blah blah. I am so not that girl. When left to its own devices, my hair resembles a dry, frizzy, unfortunate bale of hay.

Not that kind of Bale!
Christian-bale-not-straw

I have wavy, colored hair that dries out easily, so my hair takes a turn into hay-esque territory if I don’t keep it moisturized. One big thing I do to keep my hair from drying out is to let it air dry, but when the temperature drops I can’t stand wet hair. That means I have no choice but to use a blow dryer when I’m in a hurry.

Using a blow dryer frequently in winter also means I have to use several products to keep my hair from drying out. Here’s a step-by-step guide to 10 products I rely on to keep my hair moisturized and protected when the temperature drops.

straw-good-for-ponies-bad-for-hair

Everything I put on my hair in winter must help retain and replenish as much moisture as possible. To kick start the moisturization process, once a week I use Phytonectar, a pre-shampoo oil treatment ($30.00 for a 1.7 fl oz bottle with pump) that hydrates ultra dry hair.

phyto-phytonectar-pree-shampoo-ultra-nourishing-oil-treatment

Phytonectar is a rich treatment made from egg yolk oil. If you’ve got a sensitive nose, then you might be turned off by the herbal, slightly eggy scent. I kinda like it, though. My hair is really thick, so I work in two pumps thoroughly from mid-shaft to the ends. I then put my hair up in a bun, secure it with a claw clip and just hang out for a while to let the oil penetrate. While I’m waiting I’ll putter around the house or watch TV to give the product time to soak in and do its thing.

After half an hour, I’ll jump in the shower, wet my hair and work the Phytonectar into a light lather. Then, I’ll finish by washing with a moisturizing shampoo, my favorite being Bumble & Bumble’s Gentle Shampoo ($21.00 for a 8 oz bottle). It smells like honeysuckle, lathers up nicely and always rinses clean. The extra pre-shampoo step with Phytonectar makes a huge difference in keeping my hair soft and moisturized.

Even though I lurves my Bumble & Bumble Gentle Shampoo, I can only use it once a week because if I shampoo too often my hair dries out. To avoid this, I do a conditioner “wash” with a silicone-free drugstore conditioner. My favorite is VO5 Vanilla Mint Tea Clarifying Conditioner (about $2.00 for a 15 fl oz bottle) because it’s super cheap and smells like mint tea! I put a generous amount into my palms, vigorously massaging it into my scalp and hair from roots to ends. I’ve been doing conditioner washes for about a year now and they really help to moisturize my hair.

After rinsing out the VO5, I squeeze out the excess water from my hair and coat it with a moisturizing conditioner like Philip B. Deep-Conditioning Creme Rinse ($26.00 for a 6 oz tube). This silicon-free, shea butter conditioner moisturizes well without weighing down my hair. Its spicy scent reminds me of fresh baked pumpkin bread, and it rinses clean, leaving my hair feeling soft and smelling yummy.

philip-b-deep-conditioning-rinse

When the weather gets cold my scalp goes nuts. One thing I do to keep the flakes at bay is mix granulated brown sugar into my shampoo or conditioner. When you massage the grains of sugar into your scalp, the friction removes the flakes. It’s a cheap and natural exfoliant. Put a few tablespoons into a plastic bowl you set on a counter outside your shower, but don’t forget: mix it into your shampoo or conditioner immediately before washing. Wait too long and the sugar grains will dissolve.

Not only a scalp exfoliant and baking ingredient, but also one of my favorite movies ever
brown-sugar-movie-poster

When the flakes are really persistent and I need something stronger, I’ll wash with Head & Shoulders Sensitive Care Shampoo ($7.00 for a 23 fl oz bottle). It’s cheap, and I find it the least drying of all the dandruff shampoos.

Speaking of drying, try not to overdo the hair dryer. Might I suggest the miraculous T3. I know I go on and on about this thing, but seriously, it changed my life. Yes, it’s very expensive ($300), but it’s also the best dryer on the market today. It’ll dry your hair faster than Britney downs a bag of Cheetoes!

britney-cheetoes

Before I blow dry, I apply a protective layer of leave-in conditioner and gel. Right now I’m loving on Phyto 7 ($26.00 for 1.7 fl oz tube), a moisturizing leave-in conditioner made from plant extracts. It’s creamy, has a non-greasy texture and doesn’t leave my hair feeling sticky or heavy. I work a small amount throughout my hair, concentrating on the ends.

phyto-phyto-7

Next up: a few dollops of Philip B. Drop Dead Hair Straightening Baume ($22.00 6.5 oz tube). Although this gel is first a hair straightener, I like it for both curly and straight hair looks in winter because of its amazing staying power in humidity. My hair stays stick straight no matter what – rain, mist or fog. It’s also silicone-free, woo hoo!

philip-b-drop-dead-hair-straightening-baume

The last product I rely on during the winter months is Rene Furterer Naturia Dry Shampoo ($23.00 for a 3.2 oz aerosol spray can).

rene-furterer-dry-shampoo-naturia

I was really turned off by dry (waterless) shampoos after the disastrous Salon Grafix incident a few months ago, but Naturia has completely changed my tune. It freshens my scalp and gives my greasy roots a lift, extending the life of my blowout by at least two days. It also has a nice floral scent and doesn’t turn my roots white, either.

I’ve always wished for low maintenance hair, but, unfortunately, nature didn’t deal me those cards. The extra work to keep my hair happy is worth it to me because hair is that one accessory you wear every day. And, hey, when all else fails, there’s always hats!

make-up-forever-ever-professional-diamonds-fotd

I’m a little under the weather today (*achoo!*), so I’m going to spend the day chilling out. I hope your Saturday has been fun so far!

MAC Liquidlast Liner Mini-Rant

November 30th, 2007 by Karen 20 Comments

Feast your eyes upon the bane of my eyelining existence this past month, the dreaded tube of MAC Liquidlast Liner ($16.50) in Inkspill.
mac-makeup-cosmetics-liquidlast-liner-inkspill

mac-makeup-cosmetics-liquidlast-liner-inkspill-swatch

I’m usually a Fluidline/Technakohl kinda gal, but I’ve heard many wonderful things about MAC Liquidlast Liner and was stoked to pick up a tube. Plus, I couldn’t say no to the pearly deep green color.

Little did I know the world of hurt this tube would unleash.

The 266, the 209 – I’ve tried applying Inkspill with several different brushes but for some reason couldn’t draw a straight line to save my life. Every time I put it on I end up looking like a crazy, cracked-out circus clown! I briefly thought about posting pictures of one of my many bad Liquidlast experiments, but I am so not ready to go there.

After every ill-fated attempt I had to take off all my eye makeup and start over again because this stuff requires a strong oil-based makeup remover; otherwise, this liner stays put through your next few lifetimes.

But I’m not ready to give up the fight. There’s gotta be a way to make this work!

Makeup Gift Ideas from Lancome – Pure Platinum, Part One

November 29th, 2007 by Karen 27 Comments

If you obsess over sleek, silver packaging, then Lancome’s got a few holiday products you can’t miss.

My favorite is Lancome’s Colour Focus Palette in Black Tie Affair ($40.00), a fantabulous purple eyeshadow quad.

lancome-holiday-2007-colour-focus-palette-4-ombres-black-tie-affair

If you’ve followed this blog for a while you know I sometimes feel too purple to function when working the shades o’ eggplant. But, alas, all four colors in Black Tie Affair are so creamy and buildable that even the clumsy (ahem, like yours truly) can easily use them to do a purple smoky eye.

Mad crazy big hearts for:
– Hot chrome packaging! Love it!
– Shadow texture. All four shadows are finely milled, smooth and soft. They also have *fantastic* color payoff. These shadows remind me of my beloved shadows from the Chanel Garden Party Quad.
– Blendability.
– Color Flexibility. The colors are matched well, giving you plenty o’ combination options. For a daytime work look, I’d apply the white color on my browbone, take the light purple from the lash line up into the crease, wet a MAC 266 brush and apply the black shadow on the top lash line. It would also work for a light smokey eye! I’d do the same browbone and lid colors and then apply black shadow on the lashline, fading the black into the darker purple color as I moved into the crease. Many looks await you in this quad, oy!

Itty bitty hearts for:

– Brushes. Honestly, why do cosmetics companies even bother? I feel like applying these shadows with lil’ plastic sponge brushes would be a travesty.
– Price. Oui, oui, it’s pricey but you do get a lot of eyeshadow for your money.
– Fingerprint factor. I know this is kind of knit-picky, but the cool silver packaging, unfortunately, picks up all of my fingerprints, which makes it look dirrrty.

Um, not that kind of dirty.
team-xtina

You might heart it if:
– You want to try more adventurous eye looks but need help coordinating colors (hey, I know I do!).
– You like Chanel quality shadows but not Chanel prices.
– You’ve been wanting to do a purple eye but have been too intimidated to try. The Black Tie Affair quad makes it really easy.

A girl’s best friend

Got a girlfriend obsessed with gloss? Get her Lancome’s Precious Carat Lip Gloss Jewel ($40.00). This cutie pie is cut like a precious diamond and made from Swavorski crystals. The color, Diamond Splendor, is a clear gloss with big glitter sparkles.

lancome-holiday-2007-precious-carat-lip-gloss-jewel-01-diamond-splendor

Mad crazy big hearts for:
– Packaging. The diamond packaging and crystal top give this gloss elegance. There’s also a very handy mirror on the inside of the cap, useful when you’re admiring your bad self glossing it up.

Itty bitty hearts for:

– Sparkle. I’m very particular about my glitter. Although I like the color of the glitter in this gloss — peach, pink, green and gold — I find the chunks of glitter too big for my taste.

You might heart it if:
– You like a “big glitter” look.
– You collect cute gloss.
– You want to hint to your significant other that you’re ready to get engaged!

Get the look: Purple smokey eye and neutral lips
lancome-holiday-2007-colour-focus-palette-4-ombres-black-tie-affair-fotd2

Hallelujah! Finally, a purple eye that doesn’t make me feel like a drag queen. I used both the Black Tie quad and Precious Carat gloss to get this look.

lancome-holiday-2007-colour-focus-palette-4-ombres-black-tie-affair-swatches

Eyes

All the shadows I used are from the Black Tie Affair quad.

Browbone – white shadow
Lid and crease – light purple shadow
Outer crease – dark purple shadow
Lash line – black shadow
Lashes – three coats of MAC Plushlash
Lower waterline – MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack

Cheeks and Lips

To keep the emphasis on the eyes I kept the cheeks and lips soft.

Cheeks – Neutrogena Soft Suede Blush
Lips – MAC Honey B. Cremestick Liner
Lipgloss – Lancome Precious Carat Lip Gloss Jewel in Diamond Splendor

lancome-holiday-2007-colour-focus-palette-4-ombres-black-tie-affair-fotd

Did I mention that this look is easy? Makeup newbies, you gotta try it!

Misery, all alone in the moonlight

Remember the MISERY GRIN from yesterday? Well, it was in full force today. At work our internet connection was out, and it took three hours and eight phone calls to a call center half way around the world to get it up and running. The entire experience was about as pleasurable as gouging my eye out with a blunt, rusty nail.

So glad tomorrow is Friday. I’m going into SF to peep MAC’s new Stylistics collection and attend a Chanel event. Yeah, my wallet’s throbbing.

I hope your day was technologically sound … and that your brows looked extra cute.

Karen

Red Lips and Gold Eyes: The MAC Antiquitease Queen’s Sin Look

November 28th, 2007 by Karen 60 Comments

My MAC Antiquitease love just keeps growing and growing. Here’s the Queen’s Sin look, which features red lips and gold eyes.

mac-antiquitease-queens-sin-holiday-2007-engaging-mineralize-eye-shadow-uppity-blacktrack-fluidline-red-romp-lipglass-fotd-looking-down

Where to work it?

The red lip look is strong, but at the same time versatile. You get lots of mileage out of this look because you can work it in many different settings.

A classic look for work. I’ve been wearing the Queen’s Sin look to work a lot lately. Yes, the colors are bold, but the overall feel is conservative because you’re not sporting bright jewel tones or lots of glitter. The look would suit lots of different work environments – a buttoned-up law firm, a creative advertising company, or even a laid back office.

A gala night. If you need to dress to impress, you can’t go wrong with red lips, gold eyes and a great formal black dress. Don’t forget to throw in some pretty gold accessories and a dainty clutch.

Rober Palmer (RIP) back up singer. Remember the girls from the “Addicted to Love” video?
When I was a kid I got in so much trouble when my friend and I dressed up as the backup band! My mom was not happy about us “borrowing” her expensive red Clinique lipstick!

robert-palmer-addicted-to-love-video

Get the look!

Beginners, don’t be intimidated by this look. It might seem complicated but it’s really easy to do!

mac-antiquitease-queens-sin-holiday-2007-engaging-mineralize-eye-shadow-uppity-blacktrack-fluidline-red-romp-lipglass-face-chart

I had most of the products featured on the Queen’s Sin face chart but had to do just a few replacements.

MAC face chart: Brown Down eye shadow in crease (teddy bear brown)
Replaced it with: Soft Brown Matte eye shadow (soft golden peachy brown)

MAC face chart: Plum Foolery blush (faintly plum)
Replaced it with: Fab blush

MAC face chart: Burgandy lip pencil (brownish burgandy)
Replaced it with: Rimmel Indian Pink lip pencil

mac-antiquitease-queens-sin-holiday-2007-engaging-mineralize-eye-shadow-uppity-blacktrack-fluidline-red-romp-lipglass-fotd-final

To turn the look up a notch, I’ve also topped these fab red lips with a layer of Chanel Myriade Glossimer lipgloss.

And if red lips are too vavoom for you, you can always do a toned down version by doing a light stain and leaving out the gloss.

One more face of the day

mac-antiquitease-queens-sin-holiday-2007-engaging-mineralize-eye-shadow-uppity-blacktrack-fluidline-red-romp-lipglass-fotd-silly

I like to call this the MISERY GRIN. It comes out when people (El Hub, family members, random annoying people) ask me to do something when I’d rather just be sitting on the couch in a state of vegetation.

The key to the MISERY GRIN is moving that bottom lip directly downward to expose all of your bottom teeth! That way the misery can’t be missed from a mile away.

The MISERY GRIN is especially effective when you are wearing lipstick that draws attention to one’s pout, like in the can’t-miss red lips from the Queen’s Sin look! 🙂

YES! Wednesday. I’m happy that the week is almost over. Got anything exciting happening today? I’m going to dance class tonight for the first time in a month so I’m really looking forward to it.

I hope you’re having a good day so far!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
