Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 566

March 4th, 2019 by Karen 36 Comments

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start.

1. Have you ever dyed your hair red?

Not my entire head of hair, no, but I did go through a phase when I had chunky, bright red highlights. They were an obnoxious shade of red, too, like the color of a stop sign. It was in the late ’90s, and I rocked it with a short bob that had the ends flipped out… I thought I was the sh*t, but now I cringe a little on the inside when I think about it, LOL!

2. Liquid or cream concealer?

Liquid concealer, all day, every day. It’s just easier to blend and control for me, and if I need to sheer it out, all I have to do is add a drop of Fresh Seaberry Oil.

3. How well would you do if you only had one minute to apply your foundation?

Girl, I could totally do it, even upside down with my eyes closed!

I can’t believe there was a time when it took me more than 20 minutes to work on my base, because nowadays even 10 minutes is a luxury. Shoot, give me 5 minutes, and I’ll make miracles happen!

4. What did you have for breakfast?

A Trader Joe’s Non-Fat Vanilla Yogurt with a handful of blackberries and a HUGE mug of coffee.

5. Would you rather get your hair permed or your brows microbladed? (BTW, in this scenario, “neither” is not a valid option.)

Um…both options sound terrible to me. I haven’t had a perm since elementary school (Translation: It was a hella long time ago, and I looked like a poodle.), and I’m not fond of anything permanent on my face.

That said, I’d go with the microblading, but I would meticulously search for someone who specialized in natural-looking microblading, and I’d only do a few hairs at a time over the course of many, many months.

Audiobooks?

Hiya! Happy Monday, fellow adventurer!

Dude…thank goodness for coffee, because, well, it’s coffee, and it tastes SO good. Also, because I stayed up late “reading” last night, with “reading” in air quotes because I’ve been listening to an Audible audiobook of Where’d You Go, Bernadette.

MAN! It’s taking FOR-EV-ER to finish it, but I do like having someone else do the reading sometimes. I mean, I read pretty fast, so I probably could’ve finished this one twice already if I’d had it in my hands, but audiobooks force me to slooooow down, which is good in that I can get lost in a book for much longer. On the one hand, that’s great because I get to savor the story longer, but on the other hand, I get antsy, and I’ve been tempted more than once to Google the ending.

I still haven’t (yet), so props to me and my self restraint, woo-hoo! ?

royal kona vanilla macadamia nut
NOM!

OK, I’m off to pour myself another cup of Royal Kona Vanilla Macadamia Nut. Holla if you’d like one.

Have a great rest of your day!

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 543

March 3rd, 2019 by Karen 4 Comments

Tabs sure loves the rain. Most cats avoid it at all costs, but I think he finds something romantic and poetic about it.

Ever since he was a young cat, he’s loved traipsing about in the rain, and I know this because he used to be an indoor/outdoor cat, and every night he’d go tomcat-ing outside without fail. He never once looked out the door on a rainy night and went, “Nope, back inside.” In fact, whenever it was really stormy, he was even more excited to go out.

Which brings me to this collar. It’s his new Rubber Ducky Raindrop Collar, and it’s a celebration of rain, color and his love of playful silhouettes. He had it commissioned special, of course.

Best friends forever

“Meow” and happy Caturday! Shout-out to my ?❤️ kitty love, my number one, my “eldest child,” forever and ever my darling, Tabs the cat, because I know he’s going to need some extra TLC today, because it’s Connor Claire’s third ? birthday. They get extremely jealous of each other, as many siblings do, so whenever she gets a little more attention, he acts out. So someone’s getting extra gravy and lurvies this morning.

I got up early this morning to finish some last-minute birthday prep things, namely putting the finishing touches on the annual birthday lasagna, picking up the cake, getting some balloons, frosting some gluten-free cupcakes, and carrying this cat around like a newborn baby so he can have the reassurance he needs, LOL! #dontjudgeimacatladytoo

Now, please enjoy your weekend beauty (and cat) reading…

  • Some people are Team Oxford Comma, and some people are not. (FYI, I belong to the latter, in case you were wondering.)
  • Are cats really psychopaths, or do they just suffer from “resting cat face”?
  • A former NASA employee and cat dad to seven kitties is raising money to ? launch the remains of his deceased cat, Pikachu, into space. RIP, Pikachu. May you travel among the stars someday…
  • According to some (read: NOT TABS), Lil Bub is the Internet’s most famous cat…and now thanks to an $8,000 crowdfunding effort, Lil Bub’s genome has been sequenced for posterity. Gooooo science!
  • The best in makeup and hair from Paris Fashion Week, according to Allure.
  • SAY WHAT? My makeup spirit animal, Sir John, otherwise know as Beyoncé’s go-to guy, is launching his own line.
  • —> Drugstore foundations makeup artists swear by…
  • Who is this guy? I’m not sure who Ezra Miller is (Siri, remind me to Google him), but he’s rocking that red lipstick like nobody’s business.
  • Anybody try this nail polish brand before: J. Hannah? The colors are muted but look pretty cool. I think I need Blue Nudes and Artichoke.
  • Sephora’s expanding their in-house brand skin care for the Sephora Collection.

If I could, I’d dress and do my hair like Gwen Stefani’s character in this video 24/7. I ❤️ the makeup and the styling so much.

Another old fave…

And now, a new fave!

Need to try this ASAP. Also, isn’t the lighting in this video gorgeous?

If ya want, I’ll save a treat for you. Would you rather have a slice of the strawberry birthday shortcake, or one of the gluten-free vanilla muffins?

Karen

Just Like Jason Momoa, I Love Scrunchies!

March 1st, 2019 by Karen 8 Comments

Shaka that scrunchie, brah!

I don’t simply have one scrunchie on my desk right now. I have two! — and yet despite this, I totally get why they have a bad rap, because if you grew up in the ’80s, there’s a good chance you rocked a scrunchie, and you probably rocked it hard.

Then the ’90s came along, though, and everyone became too cool for scrunchies. They turned into a big joke in the hair world, like “Ewww! She’s wearing a scrunchie.”

But you know what? I’ve never forsaken the scrunchie. The scrunchie and I have been ride or die since day one, and the evidence is currently on my desk, on my wrist, and in my hair.

Look, if scrunchies are good enough for Jason Momoa, they’re good enough for the general population. Props to him for matching his scrunchie with his outfit like I did in sixth grade circa 1987, but please, Jason Momoa, if you’re reading this, I DID IT FIRST. ? *hair flip*

I DID IT FIRST, JASON MOMOA!

I’ve always loved scrunchies because they don’t leave that funny dent in your hair after you’ve had them in for a while, unlike your standard issue elastics. They don’t pull your hair out or give you headaches, either!

YOU CAN ALSO GET THEM TO MATCH YOUR OUTFIT. Mostly, I just think they’re really cute. I love that they’re floofy and look like ruffles. Um, sure, they aren’t terribly effective if you’re running or jumping. There’s no chance in hades that a scrunchie will stay in my hair if I’m working out or doing anything vigorously, but other than that, I’m 100% TEAM PRO SCRUNCHIE, always and forever. ?

Karen

The New MAC Art Library: Nude Model Eye Palette

March 1st, 2019 by Karen 11 Comments

The new MAC Art Library: Nude Model Palette ($48)

There’s a long list of lovely neutral eyeshadow palettes out there in the makeup multiverse, but when it comes to the best of the best, maaaaaaan, MAC? *snaps* When they get it right, they get it right. They write the freaking book.

Cases in point: Brooke Shields. (I still drool a little every time I think about it.); the Nordstrom Naturals palette; and the Warm Neutral and Cool Neutral Palettes.

BOMB.

And now, the new MAC Art Library: Nude Model palette.

It’s $48 and one of three eye palettes available now in the new MAC Art Library collection. I think it’s the most wearable of the bunch with its 12 neutral shades, but that’s just one of many reasons I’m lovin’ on it.

With it, you get a mix of old faves (hi, Shroom and Espresso!) and new ones, but the real beauty is that there are so, SO. MANY. MATTES.

Seven of them! When does that ever happen?! Um, never?

The rest are shimmers, none of which are too obnoxious, with various levels of shine and glitter.

I’m an NC42, by the way.

All the Art Library palettes were pieced together by MAC artists, and you can totally tell the these gals/guys had wearability and flexibility in mind.

Making matters even more profoundly wonderful is how easy all 12 are to blend. Plus, there aren’t any orange-y or reddish brown transition colors, which is quite unusual. Most of the MAC neutral palettes I mentioned at the top have at least one warm, mid-toned orange brown transition shade like Saddle or Soft Brown, and don’t get me wrong — I love those shades, but they can be a tad repetitive, particularly in neutral palettes.

Bucking that trend, Nude Model’s mid-toned matte transitions are yellowish browns and cool-toned beige grays, which you don’t see often, and it changes the palette’s overall vibe. It can’t be characterized as a simple warm-toned palette or a cool one. It’s smack dab in the middle. A neutral’s neutral, so to speak.

Bay Area Beauty Loves: Everyone for Every Body, and EO Essential Oils

February 28th, 2019 by Karen 10 Comments

eo essential oils everyone for everybody
Marin County in the house!

Yay for the Bay! This is the last in this series featuring products from and around my stomping grounds — the San Francisco Bay Area.

“Be relaxed,” it says.

Jeez, my body oil is sooooo bossy?

When body products make declarative statements…

OKURRRR!

I laugh every time I bust out this bottle of EO Essential Oils Body Oil in French Lavender, which is often, because I feel like it’s giving me tough love and telling me to chill-the-eff out, Karen.

Funny thing is, after I shower and slather my legs and limbs from tip to toes with this $15 lavender-scented body oil, I actually do feel very relaxed. After using it, I’ve fallen asleep on the couch at 8 (OK, 7:30!) more than a few times.

For the record, it’s quite hydrating, but it isn’t greasy, and the lavender scent isn’t obnoxiously powerful.

EO Essential Oils and Everyone for Every Body, their sister brand, is based here in my neck of the woods in the North Bay Area, Marin County. Both of them carry every kind of body care product you can imagine — hand soap, hand sanitizer, lotion, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, body oils, deodorant, face wash, the works — and their products are cruelty-free, made without synthetic fragrances, and affordable. A huge 34-oz. bottle of their Everyone 3-in-1 Body Lotion is $11! I’m a big fan of the Apricot + Vanilla and the Citrus Mint scents, which are spring and summer staples of mine.

And as an avid hand washer (some might even call me obsessive about it, but whatevs!), I’m also a fan of their liquid Hand Soaps. Lots of bubbles, but the soap is easy to rinse away, and it cleans without stripping my skin. My favorite “flavor” is the $8.99 EO French Lavender, which, by the way, also tells me to “be relaxed” whenever I see it, ha ha! If you like the liquid hand soaps from Mrs. Meyers, I bet you’ll like these, too.

Oh! — and they also do products for babies, toddlers and bigger kids! Connor Claire has a bottle of the 3-in-1 Soap Orange Squeeze, which is an $8 shampoo, body wash and bubble bath combo, in the tub, but El Hub and I shamelessly pilfer from it on occasion.

New Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Liquid Foundation (And a Book Review of Lilac Girls!)

February 27th, 2019 by Karen 24 Comments

hourglass vanish seamless liquid
The newest foundation in the Hourglass line: Vanish Seamless Finish Liquid Foundation ($56). I wear the shade Beige.

If you were wondering if new Vanish Seamless Finish Liquid Foundation by Hourglass is just as good as their B.O.M.B. Vanish Stick Foundation…well, sorry to bum you out, babe, but the stick is so much better.

I know. I was also hoping for a new go-to liquid version of Vanish with the same “Oh, I forgot I’m wearing makeup!” super power.

hourglass vanish beige swatch
Swatch of Beige. (I’m an NC42 in MAC.)

I wanted the stick’s same medium-to-full coverage and satiny finish, but importantly, I wanted the eeeeease. With the stick, you just draw a few stripes and blend with whatever you can grab first — a buffing brush, a sponge, your fingers, a cat’s paw… It’s like a minute, tops.

The liquid version, though? Bah, so complicated! The liquid has intensely concentrated pigment, and it’s like an airtight alibi (it completely covers its tracks, ha ha), but the finish settles into pores and fine lines if you use more than a drop or two.

Before: No makeup and a smile with my sidekick.

And after! I’m wearing Beige without any setting powder (just the foundation), because I felt like it looked kinda heavy already on its own. Eyes: MAC Art Library Nude Model palette and It Cosmetics Superhero Mascara. Cheeks: Hourglass Ambient Blush in Brilliant Nude. Lips: MAC Matte Lipstick in Down to An Art.
