Aging In Allure… How Cool Is This?

February 27th, 2019 by Karen 15 Comments

covergirl maye musk pic
WERK!

As I was flipping through the March issue of Allure (to be honest…I was procrastinating, LOL!), this beautiful picture stopped me in my tracks.

The woman’s name is Maye Musk (Elon’s mom), and the caption says she’s a model, muse and truth-teller (hyphenated!).

I can’t remember the last time I saw a picture of someone in Allure, or really any big beauty magazine, with real “experience lines.”

How awesome is this? I mean, it’s a magazine, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there were still some Photoshopping happening, but you can actually see everything — the texture of her skin, her smile lines, the creases between her brows and the beautiful crinkling at the outer corners of her eye. Basically, the markers that decorate the face of someone who’s lived a long life.

Let’s get real, when do you ever see pictures of women in big beauty magazines who actually look like they’re getting older? And she’s so totally working it! I love it.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Hiya, friend. How are you? I’m doing better today than I was yesterday afternoon, because yesterday I spent half the day at the dentist’s getting four (!) fillings on my upper right side.

On the one hand…my jaw is still a little sore. On the other, I’m happy to report that I didn’t shed a single tear at the dentist’s office. NOT ONE. I was shockingly calm the entire time, which was a first for me.

I almost celebrated this victory with an Ulta run afterward because I reeeeeeally want to get L’Oréal Infallible Fresh Wear Foundation, but my stomach started rumbling (the visit took almost three hours).

Anyway, miss you. Are you having a good week so far? Have I mentioned that we’re also in the midst of an atmospheric river here, and it’s been pouring FOR DAYS?

What Was the Last Beauty Tool You Bought?

February 26th, 2019 by Karen 15 Comments

It’s questionable whether these ought to be considered a tool…but I’ll allow it! ? I bought these funny eyeliner stickers from E.L.F. a couple weeks ago for only $2!

They looked like they’d be fun. Plus, I haven’t worked a wing in a hot second, and one can never have too much help when it comes to winged liner!

What about you? What was the last beauty tool you bought?

Karen

Working the Problem

February 25th, 2019 by Karen 14 Comments

work the problem
Something’s been on my mind lately…

I borrowed this from Matt Damon’s character in The Martian (good movie, BTW), and I think it works for me.

Work. The. Problem.

In the movie, Matt Damon’s astronaut character gets stranded on Mars during what was supposed to have been a routine space mission (aren’t they all?). Well, he gets accidentally left for dead, except that he’s still very much alive, but some of his equipment is broken and he can’t communicate with NASA or the crew of the spaceship ? he traveled to Mars with.

Yeah, talk about a BAD day.

And the day turns to weeks, then months, then… At any rate, it was a really bad time for Matt Damon’s character.

One theme that pops up over and over again in the movie is the idea of working a problem.

What does that mean?

Well, if there’s a problem in front of you — like, say, being accidentally stranded on a hostile planet with very little food, no friends, no spaceship and no means of communication — first, you gotta keep it together (a.k.a. don’t freak out).

Then, you work toward solving the very first problem in front of you, and you keep working that first problem until it’s solved. Then you move on to solving the next problem, then the next, then the next one after that. Hopefully, after you’ve solved enough of the problems, you achieve whatever the larger goal is. In the case of The Martian, it was getting the heck off Mars.

I’ve been thinking about “working the problem” a lot lately because I’ve been trying to make headway on a couple of big projects — planning some large home repairs (we have a bathroom that needs repairs, carpet that should be replaced, some needed electrical repairs, etc.) and making some changes in my career. (Definitely not quitting blogging, though. I’m just trying to get something else going.)

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 565

February 25th, 2019 by Karen 49 Comments

have a sweet monday cookie

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. ?

1. Do you ease into it, or rip off the Band-Aid?

Rip that Band-Aid off, and do it quickly before I change my mind!

2. What mascara are you wearing?

I’m taking a new one out for a spin. It’s called Mile High Club, by Wander Beauty, and it’s making my lashes look stretched out and looooong.

Fingers crossed that the curl hold lasts.

3. Are you friends with your neighbors?

I’d like to think so. We’re friendly, but it’s more like casual acquaintances than “homie” status… Mostly, it’s a time thing. I think everyone’s so busy out here in the Bay Area (and everywhere, really) that it’s tough to make time for socializing, especially when you’re of a certain age and working full time.

4. Last thing you purchased for someone else?

I got Connor an outfit at Target for her birthday on March 3. (She’s turning 3. Can you believe it?) Got her a pair of rainbow unicorn ? jeans, a rainbow ? tee and a pink zip-up sweatshirt.

5. Nude nail polish or colorful nail polish?

Colorful please! Nude shades are lovely (I’m a big fan in my eye makeup), but seriously…I don’t need any more beige in my life.

Small things to make the day sweet

Happy Monday, babe! It’s a rainy day here in Marin County…which means it’ll be a perfect day to get a treat ? from Creekside Bakery. ? It has these huge windows that look out on a bunch of old oaks and a creek. When it’s rainy, you can sit at a table and watch the leaves and branches sway in the breeze.

It’s very cozy! Connor’s a fan of the sprinkle cookies, BTW, whereas I’m more into the almond biscotti. It’s HEAVEN ON EARTH dipped into a foamy latte.

Mmm… Biscotti and coffee has been my go-to afternoon snack as of late.

How are things on your end? Wish we could have cookies and coffee together.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Question time! Here they are to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to you soon.

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 542

February 24th, 2019 by Karen 8 Comments

Sure, hosting the Cat Academy Awards tonight would have been fun. Tabs would have loved seeing Viggo Mortensen and Lady Gaga again, and it’s been a while since he got a good swag bag…

But if you’ve been to one awards show, you’ve been to them all, and Tabs really did want to finish crocheting the sweater he’s been making for his junior assistant.

Still, it’s hard not to reminisce about the old days on a night like tonight. As the winningest cat actor in Cat Academy Awards history, Tabs has five Cat Oscars, but it would have been nice to get a sixth.

Dang, if he hadn’t turned down that role in Black Panther, he would have won another Best Cat Actor award for sure.

cats in charge
So much truth.

Good morning, glory! I hope you have a cup of coffee in your paws a cat on your lap. It’s a lovely day here in Novato, haaaaay!

So…about that sign up at the top of this post, it’s SO TRUE, isn’t it? I know you know it, ha ha! I saw it at Target in the dollar section, and I thought about it later at home that night, at which time I asked poor El Hub to get out of a warm and cozy bed to go look for Tabs, because most nights when we go to bed, Tabs follows us upstairs and hangs out, with “hangs out” being code for “Tabs will sit on top of one of us while we pet him until he bites us and jumps off the bed when the petting no longer pleases him.”

I was about 10 minutes into the book I’m reading (Lilac Girls) when I noticed he hadn’t come up yet. After calling to him a bunch of times and still not hearing him meow back, I started to panic a little.

What if he’s stuck in the closet? What if he sneaked out the front door when I was bringing in the groceries? He could be halfway to Mill Valley by now, OH GOD!!!

So El Hub went to look for him. He found Tabs in his cozy nook under the TV in the living room, fast asleep. ?

Yup, this cat definitely runs the show!

On that note, here’s your kitty, beauty (and GOLDEN GIRLS) reading for the week…

  • This intrepid feline had gone missing for 10 years before finally returning home.
  • This is what happens when AI ? makes ? cats.
  • A new Golden Girls-themed cruise sets sail in 2020, and all I have to say to that is 1) “Where’s my rattan purse?” 2) “Does it dock in Miami?” And 3), “Will there be cheesecake?”
  • My makeup spirit animal, Sir John, is here to turn you into Beyoncé.
  • Urban Decay is launching a Game of Thrones collection ? in April, which leads me to wonder if George R.R. Martin might appreciate a teal eyeshadow? I can see him liking a thick line of sparkly teal on the upper lash line for some reason.
  • The Western United States, Scandinavia and Latin America — these are the new fragrance capitals of the world, according to this post.
  • This looks like a fun field trip. —> Eighth graders learn chemistry through mixing perfumes in a lab.
  • In case you were wondering what to do with that old Victoria’s Secret scent you’ve had since 2002, according to a study published recently in the Journal of Insect Science (yes, you heard me), Victoria’s Secret perfume acts as an effective insect ? repellent.
  • A secret garden in Venice is the inspiration for the new Hermes’s perfume.
  • New York City recently banned discrimination based on hairstyle.
  • One of my fave hair brands, R+Co, is expanding into makeup and fragrance.
  • Is it bad to sleep with wet hair?

Have you watched Upstairs Downstairs, yet?? I’m liking it just much as Downton Abbey.

I’m not exactly sure what’s going on here, but I love it!

This makes me so happy. ?

I wonder if this really does help kitties chill-the-eff out.

What are you up to this weekend?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Bay Area Beauty Love: E.L.F.

February 22nd, 2019 by Karen 13 Comments

elf cosmetics
More Bay Area lovin’

Yay for the Bay! In this series, for the month of February 2019, I’ll be featuring products from and around my stomping grounds, the San Francisco Bay Area.

A trifle of trivia for my friends who marvel at makeup minutia: Drugstore brand E.L.F. was founded in Oakland, California, in 2004. Contrary to popular myth, their name stands for “Eyes Lips Face,” and not for the classic Christmas film starring Will Farrell (which I’ve seen about a million times!).

WOW! That’s a lot of fun facts, I know! ? You’re soooooo welcome.

E.L.F. is low-key famous for doing a full range of super affordable drugstore makeup — color, tools, skincare, the whole nine yards — with plenty of products to choose from under $10. Whenever I have a beauty itch that needs scratching but don’t want to start a raging bonfire in my wallet, I’ll go to Ulta or Target and grab a few $2 doohickeys in the E.L.F. section for some instant gratification.

Granted, it doesn’t always work out for me, because I’m pickier about textures and finishes now that I’m in my 40s than I was in my 20s and 30s (a.k.a. the age when I could throw any shimmery shadow with the consistency of almond meal on my lids and be just fine), but sometimes I’ll find something great! Sure, it might not be the most perfect product in the history of the world, but it also won’t require me to take out a loan.

What happens when you “smize” and pop your hip in front of your garage… BTW, I’m wearing the E.L.F. Shadow Brow and Liner Palette and the No Budge Retractable Liner on my eyes.

Like their $12 matte powder eye palette with cool-toned mattes (YES!), which you can use to fill in your brows, shade your lids AND line your eyes.

Let me say that again: COOL-TONED MATTES. As in *no* orange or red shades. What a gem! I can do pretty much an entire eye look from start to finish with this palette (just add a tightline and mascara), and it works with practically every blush/lip combo around.

The caveat? Nil wear time…so I absolutely have to use it with an eye primer. If I don’t, the shadow vanishes in less than two hours.

Even with primer, it fades more and faster than higher-end shadows. But still…it’s $12! For that price, I’ll take it. I’m happy enough with the colors, the blending and the texture of the powders (similar to Urban Decay).

I made an E.L.F. run last week because I needed a pick-me-up after going to the dentist, so I got…

  • A $3 No Budge Retractable Eyeliner in Black: Long-wearing and decently pigmented (although not as pigmented as the Maybelline twist-up, so I have to use two or three layers). It’s stiff, but it’s good enough for tightlining.
  • A $2 pack of Line & Define Tape: This stuff is juuuust sticky enough. You can even cut them in half to make a pack last longer.
  • A $4 Solid Brush & Sponge Cleanser: Pretty great.

An entire haul for less than $10!? How is that even possible!?

What are your E.L.F. faves?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. TGIF!!!

Eight New Shades of MAC Powder Kiss Moisture Matte Lipstick Join the MAC Permanent Line

February 21st, 2019 by Karen 10 Comments

mac powder kiss
The eight new shades of MAC Powder Kiss Lipsticks, $19 each

Ain’t no party like a lip flake party ’cause a lip flake party don’t stop!

Whoa, Nelly! So I tried the new MAC Powder Kiss Lipstick colors today. They join the 16 shades that are already in the permanent line, and despite the crossing of many fingers and toes that my lip flakes wouldn’t crash this swatch soiree, alas…they did.

Lip flakes —> Party crashers!

It’s entirely my fault, to be fair, because I haven’t been drinking enough water, and whenever that happens, I can pretty much kiss (ha ha) any chance of smooth lip swatches g’bye.

The MAC Powder Kisses, which are a relatively new formula in the MAC fam, feel lighter than air. The Powder Kisses themselves were added to the permanent line in the fall of 2018, and if your lips are in perfect shape (as in no flakes), they’re kind of amaze-balls. They’re super comfy and ever-so-slightly moisturizing, and it’s easy to forget I’m wearing them.

And the velvet matte finish? Gorgeous! — a la hottie 1940’s pin-up girl.

From this new batch of colors, I’d steer clear of the pinks (Reverence and Sexy But Sweet), because they’re patchy right out of the gate, and I end up having to do a lot of patting and layering and babying to get them to look smooth…

Instead, go for one of brighter or deeper colors, which are less likely to settle into fine lines or draw attention to any flakes. I like Sultry Move (the bright rosy brown); Werk, Werk, Werk (the cool toned red); and Velvet Punch (a bright, cool fuchsia) the best as they’re the most pigmented of the bunch.

One layer, and I’m good.
