Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 557: So Long, 2018!

December 31st, 2018 by Karen 17 Comments

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. ?

1. Glittery lids or glossy lids?

You know I lurve me that editorial style with grungy, glossy lids, but heaven help me, I’m going through a majah glitter phase at the moment. So I say glitter, and lots of it.

2. I don’t know if you’re going out on the town tonight, but let’s say you are. Assuming that, would you rather be stuck wearing uncomfortable shoes all night long or uncomfortable underwear? YOU MUST CHOOSE.

I’ll take the undies… Both would be equally awful, but I no longer have any patience for footwear that hurts. Methinks the uncomfortable underwear would be just slightly less uncomfortable… Plus, no blisters afterwards.

3. Ponytail or French braid?

Ponytail! Mind you, I love French braids because of the waves after I take my hair down, but a ponytail’s more practical for me (less likely to come undone).

4. Grossest thing you’ve seen on NYE?

Thankfully, I’ve never encountered anything too disgusting on New Year’s Eve (knock on wood!), but having to use a bathroom at the club on New Year’s is pretty damn gross.

Ewww.

5. Will you be staying up ’til midnight?

Girl, I’m gonna try, but there’s at least a 50 percent chance I’ll be in full-on REM sleep by 10:30.

OK, OK, 75. Ha ha ha!

Last day of 2018!

That’s craziness. It seems like two seconds ago I was marveling at the spring cherry blossoms, then going to the pool in summer, and now it’s the end of the year.

Like many people, right now I’m thinking about changes I’d like to make in 2019. Do you have any “New Year’s resolutions”? This year, I don’t. I quit making them a while back because I could never keep them, you know? And I don’t want to set myself up for failure, so I’m gonna try something different this year. Instead of having “resolutions,” I’m setting little mini projects for myself.

I don’t even want to think of them as big projects because that would make them too daunting, but I can handle little mini projects. One of them is to install a shelf or some other way to organize the pots and pans in the kitchen because I can never find anything, or sometimes the pot handles get stuck in a drawer (hate it when that happens)…

I’m going to finally get rid of the pans I don’t use, and then organize the ones I want to keep in a way that I can find everything I need easily.

Then, after that, my other mini project is to organize the pantry. There’s gonna be many, many baskets and a label maker involved, LOL! I’ve blocked it off for the third week in January (no particular reason for the date; just chose it), and that week I’m going to spend 20 minutes each day organizing a different area in the pantry.

And all of these things fall under the overarching umbrella of “organizing my kitchen.”

Anyway, the mini projects are the closest I’m coming to New Year’s resolutions this year.

How do you feel about New Year’s resolutions? Do you make them? Do you keep them? (If you do, what’s your secret?) Also, while we’re at it, what are you doing tonight!? We are straight chillin’ at home.

I know! Livin’ the toddler life.

Hopefully we get to chat before the day/year is over, but if we don’t, have a safe and happy New Year’s Eve. See you in 2019!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Question time! Here they are to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to you soon.

1. Glittery lids or glossy lids?
2. Uncomfortable shoes or underwear for NYE?
3. Ponytail or french braid?
4. Grossest thing you’ve seen on NYE?
5. Are you staying up ’til midnight?

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 534

December 30th, 2018 by Karen 3 Comments

Tabs is startin’ the party early! He’s already got his New Year’s getup picked out. To be honest, he was hoping to get into a New Year’s brawl with Harris today, but Harris was nowhere to be found, so peace reigned over the neighborhood this morning.

This hat was inspired by fireworks, masquerade balls and Adam Levine’s too-tight jeans.

Tabs showed surprising restraint when he designed it. I thought he was going to just completely encrust it in jewels and gems, but instead, he went more of a minimalist route.

I still think it looks good.

Vogue did a write-up, and they called it genius. I have to agree, but what do I know about fashion?

mac glitter tripper
Sparklin’ on this spectacular Saturday!

Happy last Caturday of 2018, babe! As I type this, I’m happy to report that I’m wearing the first beauty product my face has touched since Christmas Eve. (It’s Hourglass Lip Oil, in case you’re wondering.) I’m finally getting over the most recent of three back-to-back colds, and this last one kicked my butt so hard that I haven’t even wanted so shower (and you know how I feel about showering).

Fingers and toes crossed that I make it at least a week without coming down with something new!

I hope you’ve been able to stay healthy and relatively snot-free lately, because not only is a stuffy nose hella annoying; it also gets in the way of good stuff, like wearing glitter.

Which reminds me…

MAC has a new glitter collection out called Glitter Tripper (that’s a few of the pieces up at the top), and I’m 100% looking forward to wearing some of it this weekend, because we’re celebrating my mom’s 70th birthday! ? My bro and I are taking her out for a spa day in Napa today, and tomorrow we’re all having lunch in the city. It’s a par-tay weekend, woo-hoo!

On that glittering note, here are some stories that caught my eye this week…

  • Talk about multitasking beauty products! This Swedish lip balm was developed for the military in the ’50s and can be used to cure chapped lips, oil weapons, prevent frostbite, cook with, and shine your boots.

    Wow!

  • This house in Texas is occupied by cats.

    Just cats!

Well, human volunteers stop by to care for them, but the cats live there full time. The house is officially a feline rescue adoption center and was set up by a cat lover who uses the space as a way-station for hard-to-place kitties.

    Super cool!

  • Nest Fragrances, the brand known for their home scents and perfumes, will be rolling out a 32-piece lineup of body care with lotions, mists, washes, lip balms and wipes at Ulta in January.
  • Just in case you were hoping to see a whole bunch of cats (and a few dogs) wearing hand-knitted hats…
  • Now that many makeup lines have expanded their shade range (thank you, Fenty effect), women who struggled mightily to find the right foundation for their skin tone finally have more options, but what about finding the right skin care products? Several skin care brands are now catering to “women of color,” targeting concerns like hyperpigmentation and wrinkles, which impact people of different skin tones and types in different ways.
  • Road trip, anyone? Here are 11 of the best cat cafes in the U.S.
  • Drunk Elephant, skin care darling o’ the moment, just released a retinol cream.
  • Fun fact about Wende Zomnir, the co-founder of Urban Decay: Her first job was at an Elizabeth Arden counter in a department store in downtown Fort Worth, Texas.
  • Could biodegradable packaging be on the horizon for Chanel?
  • Ruh-roh. If you’re a a fan of the brand Julep, you might want to start stocking up on your must-haves because the brand just laid off employees and is shuttering their brick-and-mortar stores.
  • This former programmer now runs a makeup company that makes products used in Marvel movies and The Walking Dead.
  • Remember the glitter bomb/fart spray video made by the NASA engineer to get back at package thieves? Parts of the story were fake.

Product Spotlight: Honest Beauty Lip Crayon Lush Sheers

December 28th, 2018 by Karen 8 Comments

Wear ’em, carry ’em, love ’em.

Like everything I’ve tried from the recently revamped Honest Beauty line, these twist-up sheer lip crayons bring it. There are eight shades in the Lip Crayon Lush Sheers line, each an affordable $12.99. They don’t have any funky flavors or scents, and they feel smooth, slick and moisturizing on my kisser. Best of all, they pack a preternatural amount of pigment — so much pigment that I can actually see the difference between the colors when I wear them (who’da thunk it?). They’re like the Neutrogena Color Sticks or the Clinique Chubby Sticks, but much more pigmented. Recommended!

I’m smitten with Sheer Raspberry and Sheer Chestnut…

Sheer Chestnut

Buuuuuut, as good as they are, if we look at them solely from an apocalyptic perspective (Why? ‘Cause I just watched Bird Box on Netflix.), they’d be lower on the “important things” totem pole than, say, antibiotics, peanut butter, tampons or weapons.

For instance, would I bother to grab one if I were on a scouting supply run in an abandoned Target? No. But if we were five years into the apocalypse, and I were miraculously still around and happened to stumble upon a stash of Lush Sheers on a cobweb-covered shelf, I’d indubitably contemplate the following:

  • “Geez, I hope one of these is Raspberry or Chestnut!”
  • “Remember how sheer lipsticks not showing up on pigmented lips was a big problem? DAMN, THOSE WERE GOOD TIMES.”
  • “Big surprise, my lips are hella dry right now.”

Then, I’d throw every last Lip Sheer into my cart, because I’d have to share them with the other survivors at base camp (OBVI). Hopefully I wouldn’t get eaten on the way back by the zombies/plague/evil whispering spirits that will have taken over.

YEAH. In Bird Box, the bad guys are evil whispering spirits, which, if you look directly at them, cause you to hallucinate and immediately kill yourself.

The Great British Baking Show Is So Complicated Now

December 27th, 2018 by Karen 24 Comments

great british baking show

I’ve been spending most of the precious little time I get to sit on the couch and let my mind wander watching the new season of The Great British Baking Show on Netflix…

Is it just me, or do the challenges this season seem overly complicated and kind of crazy? Because one of the reasons I used to love watching the show is that it gave me ideas for things I could make, like cakes and cookies I’d never seen before, but they were usually things I felt I could conceivably tackle.

Now, though, some of the challenges are crazy, like where they have to make baked hanging bread chandeliers and melting chocolate globes with layered cake tarts INSIDE THEM.

This season is also the first one ever with a vegan week, which, from a technical standpoint, is fascinating to me, because I never realized you could get that kind of lift without eggs and butter, but still…when am I gonna actually make a vegan celebration cake?

There are so many things on the show now that I can’t see myself ever baking because everything’s just so complicated. I dunno…maybe the show’s been on for so long that they felt like they had to get crazier and outdo themselves, but I miss the good ol’ Mary Berry days when the contestants would bake things I could maybe, possibly handle, like a black forest cake, a drizzle cake or a tray bake.

Ah! Take me back to that kinder, gentler time!

Product Spotlight: Honest Beauty Luminizing Glow Powder

December 26th, 2018 by Karen 16 Comments

honest beauty luminizing glow powder
Affordable dupes of one of the best high-end powders out there!

Three words: Hourglass. Ambient. Dupe.

Yeah, I went there. I totally did.

These Luminizing Glow Powders by Honest Beauty… I would bet my tabby’s stripes that the team behind them had the Hourglass Ambients firmly in mind, because they look and feel just like ’em. They have that same lovely low-key luminosity — same effect that you can kindasorta tell is there if you look really, really closely — and the powder grains are just fine, fine, fine.

Like Michael B. Jordan fine.

FOINE.

Even better, the pans are pretty big (0.35 ounces), and they’re only $19.99 each, but the bad news is that they aren’t available in as many colors as the Hourglass Ambients. These only come in two shades… The lighter one is Midnight Reflection, a pale peachy beige reminiscent of Hourglass Incandescent Light (you could say that it’s a touch less pigmented, but they’re still very similar). I use it as an inner corner highlight, a brow bone highlight, and, on the rare occasions when I wear powder under my eyes, as a setting powder for under-eye concealer. It’s b-o-m-b on all those fronts.

Oh, sure, you can also wear it as a cheekbone highlight, of course, and I’ve tried it, but I think it’s just a tad too light on my skin to do it often. But if you’re lighter than I am, you could totally rock it that way, no problem.

The darker shade, a.k.a “my jammy-jam-jam,” is Dusk Reflection. It’s a warm, peachy golden tan — like a slightly deeper version of Hourglass Radiant Light — and I like to work it by sweeping it onto my cheeks as a combo blush/bronzer, and then using it in my crease as a shadow.

The MBB Christmas Self-Care To-Do List

December 25th, 2018 by Karen 10 Comments

  1. Write Santa a letter listing all of the things you’re grateful for this Christmas (he’s actually a pretty good listener).
  2. Embrace *all* of the moments, even the imperfect ones.
  3. Lavish yourself with love and kindness.
  4. Take a few deep, relaxing breaths. Breathe in the scents of the season — the tree, the ginger cookies, the hot chocolate, the mac and cheese cooking in the microwave… (Yes, microwaving mac and cheese counts.)
  5. Let go of any guilt you’re feeling. You’ve done the best you can, and that’s all you can do.
  6. Ease your expectations.
  7. Talk a walk around your neighborhood to admire the Christmas decorations.
  8. Treat yourself. The season only comes around once a year.
  9. Light your favorite Christmas candle, and pause for a minute to listen — really listen — to your surroundings.
  10. Do one easy thing that’s guaranteed to make you smile. ? In my case, it’s watching a cheesy holiday movie, painting my nails, baking something yummy. Any small thing that brings you joy.
  11. Hug your cat (or rather, let your cat hug you, because we all know it’s gotta be their idea).
  12. Spend some quality time with yourself.

Merry Christmas, my friend! I hope you’re having a wonderful holiday. Just wanted to say a quick thank you for your friendship and for always being there this year, and to remind you to be extra kind to yourself today.

Christmas always turns me into a big mushy ball of cheesy goo (but what else is new?), and I’m sending so much love to you, to your fur family (meow), and to all the lucky people whose lives you touch.

Love you very much,

Karen

What Are Your Christmas and Holiday Traditions?

December 24th, 2018 by Karen 14 Comments

holiday traditions

Growing up, I never really thought of our Christmas and holiday traditions as being — quote, unquote — “traditions.” They were just the things we did every year without fail…

(Also known as, “traditions.”)

For instance, our family always celebrates on Christmas Eve. We have a big feast, and I’m talking MASSIVE, with special Christmas dishes like honey glazed ham, and Filipino dishes like lumpia (our version of fried egg rolls), pancit (rice noodles with vegetables, chicken and shrimp) and leche flan (caramel custard).

Lumpia (basically, the Filipino version of an egg roll)
Pancit noodles

There’s always enough to feed a small army, and family members stop by throughout the night to say hello, deliver presents, chat and eat.

Back in the day, we’d also go to midnight mass, but now that my parents are in their 70s (and I’m perpetually tired), they prefer to stay in and watch mass on TV.

The wonders of technology, right?

We usually stay up past midnight (or at least to midnight) before we open gifts, have a midnight snack, eat a little more (did I mention that there’s ALWAYS a lot of food?), and eventually everyone passes out at like 2 or 3.

The next day, we sleep in, have a big breakfast, and then everyone hangs out in their pajamas, talks and plays with their new toys.

That’s just how we always do things.

When I first started dating El Hub in the late 1800s (ha ha), I remember being shocked when he told me that his family didn’t do much on Christmas Eve. They would usually go to a Christmas Eve dinner at a relative’s house, and then they’d go home to bed, only to wake up early to open presents on Christmas morning, which totally blew my mind, LOL! I just can’t imagine Christmas without the party the night before, ya know?

Merry Christmas Eve, sweet friend. What are your Christmas and holiday traditions?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
