Unsung Makeup Heroes: Clinique Pretty Easy Liquid Eyeliner Pen

December 7th, 2018 by Karen 17 Comments

I love this so much that I rubbed off the writing on the package!

What’s an unsung makeup hero? For me, it’s an oftentimes underrated makeup morsel, a permanent collection product that scoots under the radar screen of many makeup lovers but regularly rocks my world. The long-running Unsung Heroes series features some of my favorites.

OK…I don’t know how you feel about liquid eyeliner in general, but this is THE best black liquid eyeliner in the known universe, IMO, and yes, I think it’s just as good as the Tom Ford pen.

(Yup, *that* $58 Tom Ford Liner.)

It’s the Clinique Pretty Easy Liquid Eyeliner Pen, and it’s a comparatively bargain $22. It does so many of the things that the Tom Ford liner does, and does them just as well. It’s a deep, dark black; it draws super skinny lines; dries quickly; it’s really, REALLY easy to use.

It’s got one of those long, flexible felt tips, so if you want to draw an ultra-fine line on your upper lash line or a precise cat flick in the outer corner, you can easily do it, even if you’re all thumbs, half-asleep or in a hurry.

Normally, I’d never dream of applying liquid liner when I’m in a rush, but it’s totally doable with this one. There’s something kinda magical about it and very user-friendly…which is probably why they call it the Pretty Easy Liquid Eyeliner Pen, ha!

When you try to make kissy faces and look awkward but decide to just go with it anyway. (That’s the liner on my upper lash lines, by the way.)

One of my favorite things about it is the ~20-second drying time, which doesn’t sound like a lot of time, but it’s just enough to either 1) let the line dry on its own, or, 2) and this is what I like to do, I grab a smudge brush and feather out the edge of the line to make it look blended and smooth.

And after that 20 seconds, you can blink, roll your eyes or whatever, and your liner won’t transfer up onto your lids! Once this stuff is dry, it’s smudge-proof and budge-proof.

But that’s not all! You can also find it pretty much anywhere. I love that I can just pop into the Novato Sephora and grab one if I “need to,” or that I can stop by a Clinique counter at Macy’s or Nordstrom.

I should probably get a new one soon because mine is looking very…well-loved, ha ha ha!

Product Shout-Out: Estée Lauder Defiant Nude Is the Neutral Palette You Didn’t Know You Needed

December 6th, 2018 by Karen 19 Comments

***ALERT*** Makeup workhorse! ***ALERT***

All through November, every single time I had to get ready for something — be it Thanksgiving dinner, a Novato Mothers Club meeting or lunch with a friend — I was always strapped for time (partly because I have bad time management skills, but I’m working on it. #keepingitreal).

With this palette, however, I was able to do a put-together makeup look from start to finish in 10 minutes time.

Yup, just when you thought when you’d seen and hoarded every neutral eyeshadow palette that you absolutely “needed” (“air quotes”) to get, along comes one from Estée Lauder to blow your mind.

Estée Lauder Defiant Nude ($54) has five powder eyeshadows — two mid-toned golden browns, a dark matte neutral brown, a neutral matte beige and a slightly darker matte peachy beige.

Do these colors sound pretty basic?

Yes, yes they do…

But let me tell ya, every single time I had to dress up and go out to see people looking respectable in the month of November, I grabbed this palette. Then I grabbed it again. And again. AND AGAIN!

It’s just so wearable, lovely and easy to use, and all of the shadows are long-lasting, with or without an eyeshadow base.

(Yes, sometimes I leave the house without an eyeshadow base… I know! Believe it or not, though, the world does not fall apart.)

You know me; I love my golden browns, cooler-toned browns and neutral browns, and this user-friendly palette masterfully sculpts the crease while adding an opalescent, understated glow to your lids. Plus, you can be imprecise with your application AND your blending, and your eye makeup will still look good.

That’s magical.

Estée Lauder gave it just enough pigment to define your eyes and add some color, but not so much that you’ll miss the movie because you’re stuck buffing and correcting and blending at home because you accidentally overdid it during the application.

And they also have such gorgeous finishes! The two golden browns get the most play on my lids because they’re both… Well, you know how when you want your lids to glow, but you don’t want them to be so shiny that they scream “LOOK AT MY FINE LINES”? These two golden browns are it!

Someone Is (Illegally) Using My Name and Likeness to Contact Beauty Companies and Solicit Free PR Products

December 6th, 2018 by Karen 32 Comments

PR friends, contacts and dear readers,

Someone is using my name and likeness in order to obtain free PR products (and who knows what else?).

This appears to have been happening since March of 2018 (!).

I apologize for any confusion this may have caused. If you’ve corresponded with someone via the following email address:

karenmakeupandbeautyblog@gmail.com

Or, if you’ve sent, or have been asked to send, PR review products to a mailing address that includes…

San Francisco, CA 94118

That was not me. 🙁

To the person doing this, you should know that this constitutes mail fraud, which is a federal offense. Your email address, San Francisco mailing address, and other pertinent details have been provided to law enforcement.

Also, this is so not cool. Shame on you.

Long-Lost Makeup Twins and Midweek Makeup Inspiration With Smoke and Glitter

December 5th, 2018 by Karen 17 Comments

A post shared by Визажист, Челябинск (@piminova_valery) on Oct 29, 2018 at 12:39am PDT

You know how people say that everyone on earth has a secret doppelganger twin out there somewhere that they have no idea about?

I believe this universal condition of life also applies to secret makeup twins…but they aren’t, like, someone who does their makeup the exact same way as someone else. No, a “secret makeup twin” (yes, I’m coining the term right now) is someone who does makeup in a way that speaks to your soul, and whose looks you wish you could wear all the time. They do makeup that you would totally do yourself, if you could.

Short story long…I think I found mine, and she’s in Russia! And her name is Piminova. I found her on Instagram while I was looking for inspiration and new artists to follow.

Take the look at the top with the purple lids and the teal on the lower lash line…

That teal! I love how low the artist takes the shadow, and how there’s a dark greenish gradient on the outer and middle lower lash line, which then ends with a bright pop of green in the inner corners.

MAN! That’s what I would wear today if I had four hours to put on makeup and nowhere to go, ha ha ha! Because seriously, that’s how long it would take me to do this.

I’m sure Piminova can bust it out quicker, but no joke, half my day…

But everything about this look is exactly how I would try to handle it! I love how the model’s eyes are so “bah-BAM,” but the skin is even-toned, and yet aggressively contoured or highlighted.

I love the nude lip, too, and the hint of highlighter on her Cupid’s bow and the tip of her nose. And I love that her brows are brushed and bushy.

So good!

Here’s another look I love…

Ruminations on Red Eyeshadow…

December 4th, 2018 by Karen 23 Comments

I’m seeing scarlet! That’s MAC Eye Shadow X 9 in Red Hot Times Nine on my lids, BTW.

If you would’ve asked me five years ago to talk about red eyes, I would’ve told you about that one time I sat in an exit row seat on a frighteningly turbulent red-eye flight to Maui (Side note: It was terrible.), or about the creepy dude I used to work with who got “pink eye” every five minutes…then proceeded to give all of the other people in our office pink eye every time he got pink eye. *shaking my head*

Yes, it was gross.

But I digress…

In case you hadn’t noticed, red eyes, as in red eyeshadow, are totally a thing now, and I never would have predicted the rise o’ red in a million years. I mean, even Chanel did a collection with red eyeshadow (back in 2016)! If that isn’t a tell-tale sign of how mainstream red eyes have become, I don’t know what is.

And it isn’t only about straight-up crimson. Warm reddish browns and reddish oranges are also having (and have been having) their moment.

I resisted red (and reddish) eyeshadow for very long time, but then Instagram started inundating my feed with all of these artists doing looks with red. I was seeing red in the crease as a transition shade, and red on the upper lash line as winged liner, and somewhere along the way, it started to rub off on me.

Now when I wear red, I don’t automatically feel like I look like death warmed over. Now I think it looks kinda artsy-fartsy, and I don’t mind it anymore.

Gloss + Liquid Lipstick + Stain = MAC Versicolour Varnish Cream Lip Stain

December 3rd, 2018 by Karen 10 Comments

mac versicolour varnish
Creamy, shiny, slick! The new $22 MAC Versicolour Varnish Cream Lip Stains are available meow

Not once, but twice over the past week have I wondered aloud, “What is this exactly?”

The first time I was out getting dinner with the family.

Actually, it was during dessert (I got spumoni ice cream, which, who’d a thunk that cherry, pistachio and chocolate would go so well together?).

The second time was the first time I was trying the new MAC Versicolour Cream Varnish Lip Stains.

mac versicolour varnish 2
I wonder… What’s the plural of doe-foot??

These creamy, shiny glosses are kinda different and cool. They have a non-sticky formula, and they fade over time to a matte lip stain. They come in a whole bunch of colors, too, for $22.

I think one of the reasons I like them so much is because they feel like my favorite MAC glosses…which I can’t recall the name of right now.

Dangit! What are those called again? I’m having a brain fart… They’re the moisturizing ones that feel thinner than a Lipglass? Something-something glasses?

Not Lipglass. Not Dazzleglass…

Wait! — CREMESHEEN GLASS! Aaah!

The Versicolours feel just like them, only thinner.

“Captivate with a lip colour hybrid that’s glossier, higher coverage and harder impact than ever before. Its watery-light formula glides on creamy and comfortable to impart long-wearing, saturated full coverage and an always-fresh wet finish. Find entrancement in its 12-hour, intense staining power – promising to last far into the day and night.”

— maccosmetics.com

When they go on, they’re VERY pigmented and shiny. It’s like, BAM! — color and shine. And that goes for all of them.

Over the next 10 minutes or so they start to feel thicker — almost like a liquid lipstick — and fade into a stain.

Even though I’m more drawn to the dark pinks and reds in the collection, I think the best shade of the whole bunch is rosy nude Bitten Babe because it doesn’t stain my lips unevenly like the other colors do to where I get a dark or bright spot in the middle of my lips, which then fades into a lighter stain toward the edge of my lips.

I guess that’s a high fashion-y lip look, but I’m partial to evenly stained color, a la Bitten Babe, which I’ve been wearing a ton. It starts as a glossy, rosy pink but turns into a nude pink stain by midday, where it lasts for about four hours.

After two hours…

More deets…

  • They aren’t particularly moisturizing or drying…so they’re somewhere in the middle in terms of moisture.
  • Unsurprisingly for MAC, they smell like vanilla, and I don’t detect a flavor.
  • They don’t settle into my lip lines (yay!).
  • The darker stains last longest — like 6-7 hours.
  • The reds all kinda look alike on me… Go figure.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 553

December 3rd, 2018 by Karen 28 Comments

Goat selfies should be a thing

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. ?

1. Have you ever ridden a moped?

Nope, but I seriously thought about doing it many times when I lived in SF. I just never got around to actually doing it.

There’s something very appealing to me about tooling around town in a mint green Vespa for some reason (it’s gotta be mint green though… No other color will do). I’ll probably never do it at this point because I know myself way too well, and I absolutely do not belong on anything motorized with two wheels.

2. An instance when you were genuinely shocked?

A few years ago when El Hub got home from work and told me that our long-time family friends were getting a divorce.

It blew my mind. It was the proverbial “They seemed so happy!” thing. It just goes to show you that you can’t always tell from the outside what people are really going through.

I’m also a bonafide softie, and I always want to believe that love lasts forever, so I was shocked — like jaw dropped to the floor — when I found out.

3. List all of the skin care you’re wearing on your face right meow.

Ooh! OK, here we go! These are in the order in which they’re applied…

  • Drunk Elephant C-Tango Multivitamin Eye Cream
  • Tarte Knockout Tingling Treatment
  • Kate Somerville Dermal Quench Wrinkle Warrior
  • Kate Somerville Anti Bac Acne Clearing Lotion
  • Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Cream mixed with a few drops of Fresh Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil
  • Clinique Superdefense Broad Spectrum SPF 20 for Very Dry to Dry Combination Skin

4. How often do strangers mess up your name?

Not too often. “Karen” is pretty basic, but I’ve still gotten my share of creative monikers written on my to-go cups when I’ve ordered a toasty beverage from Starbucks, Cairn, Carrot, Care and Karun (pronounced Ka-roon).

Sometimes I think maybe the baristas do it on purpose to amuse themselves, which is TOTALLY what I would do if I were writing names on cups all day long, ha ha ha!

5. On a scale from “Fabulously festive” to “bah humbug,” how do you feel about the holidays today?

Full-tilt fabulously festive ??. I’m feeling the spirit!

Life Lesson No. 3,546

Girl…if you’re gonna take a selfie with a goat, be prepared for that goat to 1) lick your hair and 2) outshine your bad self.

I guess I should be glad the goat didn’t try to eat my hair? After all, my hair did smell a little like bacon and Cheetos, so I wouldn’t have blamed her had she tried, ha ha! She (the goat) lives on a Christmas tree farm in town. We visited it yesterday, not to get our tree yet, because we’re doing that next weekend, but because I wanted to take a family selfie for the holidays, and it was the closet Christmassy-looking place nearby. #keepingitreal

So, yeah, if you live in Novato and saw a lady shamelessly walking around Cousins’ Christmas Trees yesterday with a selfie stick, looking for good lighting, that was yours truly!

Fa-la-la-la-la

Have you put up your tree yet?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Question time! Here they are to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to you soon.

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 530

December 2nd, 2018 by Karen 7 Comments

Tabs, the Chief Feline Festivities Coordinator of Tabs the Cat Industries LLC, insisted on doing his rounds this morning while wearing his latest corporate cat collar creation. His intention was to send a clear message to the employees that the holidays are coming, so everyone better meet their year-end gravy quotas.

Sure, this is a fun time of year, and Tabs likes doing the holiday party circuit as much as the next feline fashion mogul, but gravy futures are down this quarter. If the staff wants that new La Croix vending machine for the employee lounge, we gotta turn those numbers around.

To restate the obvious, green is his color, in case you haven’t noticed.
