royal kona vanilla macadamia nut
Happy Caturday!

“The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup.”

Remember those commercials? I always laugh at that jingle because the best part of waking up for me has always been falling back asleep, ha ha ha! ?

Good morning to ya, and happy Caturday. ❤️? Who needs another cup of coffee? I’m not drinking my standard-issue Folger’s today (Team Simply-Smooth-4-Life!) because another blend wooed me away. It’s called Royal Kona Vanilla Macadamia Nut 10% Kona Coffee Blend, and I found a bag stashed away in the back of my cupboard last month (I’m on a mission to finish all of the random bags of coffee in my life before I buy a new bag). Now it’s my favorite! It’s smooth and rich and has a subtle nutty vanilla flavor.

MAN, it’s SO good! I usually have it with either milk or Vanilla Premier Protein, because black coffee tastes like punishment…

And the best thing about it? It doesn’t give me the shakes. I can drink cup after cup after cup and not feel jittery.

Try it! ☕

OK, now while I get down with my coffee, you can get down with this’ week’s weekly reading.

  • Anyone want to come with me to Amsterdam to visit this houseboat of cats? Anyone…?

I just wanna go back to 1999, too.

Somebody please make this for me ASAP.

I’m a ghd curler gal, but nevertheless I’m kinda intrigued by this new Dyson doohickey.

Later today we’re going to a BBQ at Connor’s preschool, so I’m excited about that. I hope you’re doing something fun today. Talk to you soon.

Do You Take Off Your Lipstick Before You Eat?

October 12th, 2018 by Karen 19 Comments

mac lipsticks

Do you? I had a friend who did this every time she sat down for a meal (or even before she had a cup of coffee), and as much as I can appreciate the “why” behind it, I just can’t be bothered… Granted, sometimes I wonder know how much MAC Russian Red I’ve consumed along with all those spoonfuls of Nutella…but still, old habits are hard to break.

How about you? Do you take your lipstick off before you eat?

The Benefit Brow Contour Pro 4-in-1 Defining & Highlighting Brow Pencils Will Take You From “No” Brows to “WHOA!” Brows in Seconds

October 11th, 2018 by Karen 9 Comments

CLICK!

I gotta say, I wasn’t sure what to do with these Benefit Brow Contour Pro 4-in-1 Defining & Highlighting Brow Pencils at first… Do I fill in my brows with them? Or do I furiously take organic chemistry notes? — because back in college those four-color click pens were all the rage in my science classes, and we used to joke that the faster you clicked your pen, the more desperate you were to get into med school, ha ha!

Wearing Brown-Black Light in my brows (the eyeshadow is Urban Decay Naked Cherry, BTB).

So, about these, I appreciate that Benefit calls them “Pro” because I feel like you gotta be a professional brow person to really appreciate them.

Why?

Because they’re 1) very pigmented and 2) very soft, which can be either a lethal or a pleasant combination, depending on your level of brow game. Like, if you don’t know what you’re doing, there’s a good chance you’ll end up with severe, blocky brows.

“Define & highlight your brows with this 4-in-1 contour pencil. Our multi-tasking brow pencil features a lighter brow shade, deeper brow shade, edge definer and arch highlighter to create clean, shaped brows with depth & dimension. Turn shapeless, flat brows into defined, contoured brows in an instant. Available in 5 shades for a wide range of hair colors and skin tones!”

  • Easy brow contouring
  • 4-in-1 brow pencil
  • Blendable formula

13 Things That Cross My Mind While I’m Shopping at Michaels

October 11th, 2018 by Karen 18 Comments

There is a significant chance that I may never leave this place…

1. Like, was there ever supposed to be an apostrophe on this sign?

I wonder… Because some companies with names that end in ‘s’ have or had at one time apostrophes in their name. Sometimes they go through a re-branding somewhere along the way and lose the apostrophe.

Hmm…

2. Will Tabs attempt to fight this Halloween black cat if I put it in the front yard? (Probably.) Perhaps the pumpkin would seem less confrontational? Cats are weird, man…

3. Wait — is this place a secret safe haven for cat ladies, just like HomeGoods? OHEMGEE, I THINK IT IS!

4. Must touch all the yarns…

5. Um…didn’t I already walk down this aisle? I swear, I just saw these pens a minute ago.

6. Why do I want all of these shabby chic signs for my kitchen? — because my kitchen doesn’t look anything like a pumpkin patch or a farmers’ market. Also, I don’t own any antiques, so why do I want an oversized sign that says “ANTIQUES” on it?

MAC Kajal Crayon: Better the Second Time Around…

October 10th, 2018 by Karen 5 Comments

Track these babies down ASAP.

It just goes to show ya that it never hurts to give a product a second chance, because I did not care for the $23 MAC Kajal Crayons when they first launched in Diane Kendal, but I’m all about this new batch. I don’t know if MAC tweaked the formula, or if I’m just remembering things differently, but I think these are SO good — especially if you’re a smoky-eye-’til-I-die person like I am.

Basically, these are chubby liners/eyeshadows that adhere to water lines AND skin. You’re supposed to plop them on, then blow out the edges (a.k.a “smoke it the eff out”) using your fingers or a brush.

I like using the MAC 217 with them because I think I can feather out the edges more quickly with it than I can with a fluffier brush like the 224.

By the way, I softened the transition along the edge in this pic with Soft Brown and Saddle.

I’m wearing Dear Darling on my eyes, and the lip is MAC Liptensity in Smoked Almond (also worn as a blush on my cheeks).

Creamy pencils like these usually have a limited — I guess you could call it “shelf life” on your lids and water lines because of how easily they move. And the creamier they are, the more they move.

You can smudge these Kajal Crayons and smoke them out as much as you want, but once they’ve set, they stay put.

I mean, you don’t have all day long to make tight and tiny circles with your 217, but you get about five minutes, and for a messy, smoky eye using a single color, that’s usually enough time.

Another thing: You can layer these as much as you want to because they don’t go patchy.

I ❤️ these shades.

What Does Self-Care Mean to You?

October 10th, 2018 by Karen 17 Comments

The way the phrase is commonly used in the beauty world, “self-care” usually refers to outward beauty maintenance — things like doing a face mask or taking a bubble bath or getting your hair done, i.e. “meow time,” and I totally get that, because how many times have I found respite at the salon or in painting my paws or in playing with makeup on my bedroom floor? Too many times to count.

But these days self-care also means something else to me. It means taking care of my inside voice and my mental and emotional health by doing the things that I know help me feel functional during the day, like getting enough sleep at night, and staying hydrated, and doing my hair in the morning (instead of just putting in up in a messy bun), and changing out of my pajamas into “real clothes” before 10. (Side note: I work from home, so there’s always the temptation to not fix my hair and stay in my robe all day, but when I do this I always feel like crap.)

Also, stretching, since it helps with my back pain, and sweating for at least 30 minutes a day, or however often I can swing it. Making my bed first thing in the morning is another thing that helps, as does eating raw fruits and veg… I also try to care for myself by reminding myself throughout the day that the little things that IRRITATE ME won’t matter in 10 years.

Probably the most important thing, and this took me a long time to figure out, is to do everything I can possibly do to proactively keep myself from slipping down into that space where I feel perpetually blue, and when I start to feel it coming, I tell El Hub, for one. I also reach out to my friends and family and make plans to do things with them (this one is hard for me because I naturally want to retreat inward and be left alone when I start feeling blue).

I also try to work out a little more, because exercise really helps keep my mood even, and I make myself do at least one thing from the Post-It list of “activities that spark joy” that I keep on my computer.

All of this really helps me care for myself.

What does self-care mean to you? 🙂

Karen

Bada-Bing! The Urban Decay Naked Cherry Collection Is Out Now

October 9th, 2018 by Karen 21 Comments

urban decay naked cherry palette
The new $49 Urban Decay Naked Cherry collection eyeshadow palette

Clearly, UD has a thing for Bing…cherries. Based on the packaging for new Naked Cherry collection, Bing is bomb, and I can appreciate that. I mean, I get it. I see the connection. A deep, dark, purplish Bing makes sense for a makeup collection, but I still like Rainiers more. They’re sweeter, man! And I love that red and yellow ombre action #importantfruitopinions.

(Quick makeup query: Years ago MAC also released a cherry-inspired collection. Can you remember what it was called?)

urban decay naked cherry collection packaging

No reds, but plenty of pink and plum

Surprise! — there’s not a lot of red in UD’s new Naked Cherry collection.

LIKE NONE.

Red eyeshadow is on trend right now, but if you were hoping for seductive scarlets, vampy vermilions and ruby reds in this release, sorry.

The collection, which has been out about a week now, includes an eyeshadow palette ($49), a blush/highlighting trio ($34), two eyeliners ($21), three lipsticks ($34), and a cherry-scented setting spray ($15).

Judging by the name — Naked Cherry — you may have quite naturally expected there to be copious quantities of crimson in this collection, but these pretties are predominantly pink, rose, purple and mauve. Even more shockingly, no orange-y browns in the eye palette!

I know; am I still in the normal reality?? When was the last time UD released a palette without an orange-brown?

Quick take: shockingly wearable

If you’re craving something kind of different that isn’t filled with typical browns, AND you like wearing purples, AND you can see yourself venturing into the Land of Mauve and Rosy Tones, the Naked Cherry palette is worth a look. I like it.

The Naked palettes are Urban’s take on neutrals, and Naked Cherry still seems, well…neutral. I thought I would have a hard time with it because whenever I wear red, or reddish eyeshadows, I look sick and/or tired, but that’s not a problem for this palette, since these shades do not have red undertones. There are just plenty of wearable purples, plums, burgundies, roses and mauves.

Oh, and kisses of copper, beige and peach to break things up a little.

The palette appears to be similar to Backtalk (which caused a minor uproar among people who were expecting a straight-up red eye palette when it was recently launched), but… Anyway, you could stick the eyeshadows from Naked Cherry into the the Balktalk palette, and they’d appear to fit right in, but they are quite different (see the swatches below). These colors are more than different enough to stand on their own.

Nail Polish Chit-Chat: What Colors Do You Wear the Most?

October 9th, 2018 by Karen 37 Comments

That moment when you realize that you wear a lot of baby blue nail polish…

Ever since Hard Candy Sky in the ’90s, I’ve been a blue nail polish girl.

Actually, now I’m a greenish blue/blueish green/blue/green nail polish girl. Those are definitely the color families I wear the most.

Oh, and purple. I’ll sprinkle a purple up in there from time to time. So blues, greens and purples are the shades I wear the most, and to get even more rambly on ya, I hardly ever wear orange nail polish. It doesn’t really do anything for me at all. Neither does beige nor tan.

How about you? What nail polish colors do you wear the most? (BONUS: And what do you hardly ever wear?)

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
