What’s Your Makeup Nightmare?

July 17th, 2018 by Karen 16 Comments

foundation drawer
A little obsessed.

I’ve had this on my mind since my buddy Yelena and I were chatting in the comments last week about the stuff of our makeup nightmares. Yelena’s is a world without brow products, and yeah…I have to admit, that would be pretty crappy, especially for my right brow, a.k.a. my “ghost brow,” a.k.a. the brow that disappears into oblivion.

My makeup nightmare scenario, however, is a world without every single option under the sun for glowing skin, because I can’t imagine my foundation drawer with, like, only one option! *shudders*

Some days I want a little shimmer; some days I want more matte; some days I want more coverage; and some days I want less… I quite love having lots of choices on any given day. I’ve morphed into a foundation junkie, I guess.

Don’t get me wrong — I still LOVE color and wearing lots of it on my eyes, cheeks and lips, but there’s just something about skin that looks like real skin that I find so satisfying these days… Go figure!

Anyway, please don’t ever, EVER take away my foundations. It would break my ❤️ heart!

Karen

Unsung Makeup Heroes: Chanel Rouge Allure Ink in Créatif

July 16th, 2018 by Karen 9 Comments

Chanel Rouge Allure Ink Matte Liquid Lip Colour in Créatif

What’s an unsung makeup hero? For me, it’s an oftentimes underrated makeup morsel, a permanent collection product that scoots under the radar screen of many makeup lovers but regularly rocks my world. The long-running Unsung Heroes series features some of my favorites.

I’m always down for a summery coral lippie, and Chanel Rouge Allure Ink in Créatif ($37) is THE ONE.

Well…the one for this week, ha ha ha! ? Hello, have we met? My name is Karen, and I have a new coral crush every other day.

But that’s neither here nor there.

This one’s a matte liquid lipstick, but it’s unlike your typical dry and heavy/hello horizontal lip lines/cat butt liquid lippie sitch. It’s on the thinner side, like the NARS Powermattes, so you can’t feel it sitting on your lips, and it lasts about the same amount of time (~5 hours), but it’s much, much easier to control as it glides across your lips.

chanel creatif
I’m hoping that wearing Créatif will spark some creativity…

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 533

July 16th, 2018 by Karen 59 Comments

k pool monday poll pic
Thinking about all the kittens I wish I could hug

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Good question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past gazillion years (more than 10!). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a great start. ?

1. Where do you usually put on your makeup?

It really depends on the light and what time of day it is, but I usually do it in the same place I write, which is my office at home upstairs. The light from my office window is nice and bright until about 4. Then it gets a little too dark. Any time after that, and I’m probably doing my makeup on the floor in my bedroom.

Oh, and my car! (In the passenger seat, of course.) I am forever putting on makeup in a moving vehicle, it seems!

2. Which would you rather do — an eyelash perm (a.k.a. a lash lift), eyelash extensions or eyelash tint?

Eyelash perm in a heartbeat, because even though I love the idea of extensions, I just know that having that little bit of extra weight on my lashes would drive me crazy.

3. Do you have any psychic abilities?

Other than the ability to psychically predict precisely when my cat gets up to no good? Nope.

But before my tabby sense goes off…the house gets eerily quiet — like the calm before a storm — and then, BOOM. A tiny tabby paw comes out of nowhere and pulls your sandwich off the living room table!

4. Something you’d like to eat today?

I’d love a chopped salad with a hunk of fresh bread and a tall glass of unsweetened iced tea to wash it down.

5. Have you ever taken in a stray?

So many times! All of my animal companions and I have found each other through the randomness of the universe, but the biggest love, the greatest love, will always be Tabs. He’s my once-in-a-lifetime cat.

Thoughts on books: e-books or the old-fashioned kind?

Last night before bed I started a new book I checked out from the library, and as I was flipping through the pages to look for pictures or maps (does anyone else do this?!) I got to thinking about whether people still like reading “old-fashioned books” — ya know, the ones with pages! I have a Kindle and even though I’ve used it and liked it just fine, there’s something about feeling the weight of a book in my hand and the pages as I flip through them that I like so much more than scrolling with my finger on a screen. I might be old school that way though. Which do you prefer?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Question time! Here are they are to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to you soon.

2. Which would you rather do: an eyelash perm (AKA lash lift), eyelash extensions, or eyelash tint?
3. Do you have any psychic abilities?

5. Have you ever taken in a stray?

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 510

July 15th, 2018 by Karen 4 Comments

Sunday is summer fun day at Chateau Tabby, and even though Tabs takes his role as CFO (Chief Feline Officer) of Tabs the Cat Industries LLC seriously, that doesn’t mean feline fashion has to suffe, so today Tabs sported his new summer fun collar on this morning’s security patrol.

You know Tabs. He always finds a way to mix business with pleasure. 🙂

In fact, Tabs was actually hoping the paparazzi would come around today because he felt particularly fetching, but no such luck. It was an uneventful patrol, which is good I guess, because the last thing I need is to do is break up another feline fight club.

What do you think of the new collar?

Tabs is contemplating making these mandatory for all employees throughout the rest of summer.

I’m lobbying to allow an exception for the humans…

sourdough book
BREAD!

So, I’m reading a book about sourdough.

It’s fiction, and no, the main character isn’t a loaf of bread (in case you were wondering). Bread does, however, play a silent but omnipresent supporting role as a very tasty cast member, ha ha!

The book’s called Sourdough, by Robin Sloan, and it’s about a young woman who moonlights as a sourdough bread baker by night, while she works as a programmer for a robotics company in San Francisco by day.

No, really, I’m serious! You can’t make this stuff up!

Well, I mean, you can…

Anyway, the glutinous puns are glorious! — although I recognize that it might be a Karen thing to enjoy passages about feeding live yeast starters and building backyard brick ovens this much. I stayed up late reading it last night and dreamed about rising dough and proofing baskets into the early morning.

Oh, and check this out…

Don’t you love books that have maps in them?? I do. This one has a map from right around here because it takes place in the Bay Area. As we speak, I’m typing this from Novato, which is slightly northwest of the little drawing of the Golden Gate Bridge, and the town I grew up in, Union City, is just south of Alameda.

If you need me today, I’ll be reading this. I’ll have my nose between the pages, and if it’s warm enough, I may even read a chapter by the pool.

Ah… ??️

Jumping into the weekend like… ☀️? #pooltime #fridaymood

A post shared by Karen | Makeup and Beauty Blog (@karenmbb) on Jul 13, 2018 at 4:04pm PDT

For a little light reading, here are some of the stories from around the Interwebs that caught my eye this week…

  • The only Kylie I keep up with is Kylie Minogue, but kudos to Kylie Jenner for making it onto the cover of Forbes. Her makeup line is worth an estimated $800 million, and she’s only 20 (!).
  • Have you seen these in your Facebook feed yet?? Because I haven’t. Using Augmented Reality (AR), you can virtually try on clothes and makeup before you buy. It looks a lot like a Snapchat or Instagram filter, so it’s not like going into a dressing room and trying something on, but still… Kinda cool. Makes me wonder how kids today will be shopping when they’re my age.
  • I can’t be the only person who’s always looking for more makeup artists to low-key stalk, so here’s a list of the 2018 Emmy nominees in the makeup and hairstyling categories. See anyone you know? I’m happy to see Glow on the list!
  • GO, JACKIE, GO! I’ve been a huge fan of vlogger Jackie Aina for years now, and I’ve been happy to see her beautiful face all over the beauty world lately, even recently teaming up with Too Faced to formulate darker shades for the Born This Way Foundation line.

  • Here are a few of her favorite beauty products for women of color.

  • These six gadgets are supposed to contour and sculpt your face without makeup.
  • Why are some scents more expensive than others? This very detailed piece walks through the differences between pure perfumes, eau fraiche, and everything in between.
  • Fave read of the week.
  • Is Lady Gaga launching her own beauty brand a la Fenty? She’s quietly working on a new beauty startup, and it already has Silicon Valley investors.
  • As someone with a kid who occasionally appears on Instagram doing (what I think are) cute things, and as someone who loves seeing other people’s kids on the ‘gram doing cute things, I have mixed feelings about “spawn con,” also known as sponsored content featuring children.

On the one hand, kids born today can’t escape technology, and it ain’t cheap to raise a child, or maybe build a college fund.

But on the other hand…would it be better to wait until a kid is old enough to make his/her own decisions? With cameras, and wearable devices and the Internet everywhere, does it even matter?? Will anyone be able to avoid having their pictures online 10 years from now? I don’t know.

  • Go, science! And goooooooo women in plant science! Alice Tangerini is the first and only botanical illustrator at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, where she has been making her mark for 46 years.

I feel totally weird if I don’t read enough during the week. For me, it’s like working out, and the more I read, the better I feel.

Which reminds me…Saturday HIIT class. Soon. (Like in 15 minutes, whoops!)

You wanna go do some burpies with me? NO!?

Alright, alright. You have fun reading, then. 🙂 Enjoy the rest of your day, OK?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

The Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils: A Love Letter

July 13th, 2018 by Karen 10 Comments

urban decay stash
Urban Decay Stash on my lash lines

Dear Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils,

I love you.

I love you, I love you, I love you.

I have a sneaking suspicion that I don’t tell you that enough, so…I LOVE YOU.

I apologize if I hurt your feelings sometimes. When I haphazardly toss you into my makeup bag, it’s not because I don’t care. It’s not because I don’t want to spend more time with you. It’s because I’m so excited for us to get on about our day. I love spending entire days with you, which I know we’ll be able to do, since your luscious long-wearing formula hugs my lash lines and doesn’t let go.

The other day, shortly before I rimmed my lids with Mushroom, my favorite metallic taupe on account of the way it illuminates my brown eyes without hardly even trying (and that flash of blue from certain angles? GORGEOUS!), I was haphazardly grinding the tip in a pencil sharpener and zoning out like I’m apt to do while I’m putting on makeup that I know I can depend on, I thought, “Easy, Karen. Take it easy. Just because this is a quickie look doesn’t mean you have to hack away like a lumberjack without any muscle control.”

Oh, my gorgeous Glide-Ons, you’re always there for me, even when I treat you like ? poop. You deserve to be handled with kid gloves.

Current crushes

So, let me tell you why I ❤️ you so…

First, just when I’m ready to go all sad panda because I glance at the clock and realize that I don’t have any time left in my morning for eye makeup, your colors dance across my lids and lash lines like beams of light across the sky. These days, your neutral colors are my go-tos — basically, anything taupe, olive, gunmetal gold or bronze.

When I draw a swish on my upper and lower lash lines, followed by plenty of mascara, I actually don’t mind skipping eyeshadow. Ever since my semi-hooded lids situation started evolving into a full-on hooded lid sitch (such is life), complicated eyeshadow looks have become something of a pain, and it’s refreshing to not have to deal with precise placement and blending and making sure that everything looks even so I don’t walk outta the house with lids that look like garage doors…

Thanks to you, I just do a little liner, then peace out.

How Do You Feel About Scented Shampoos…for Your Pet?

July 13th, 2018 by Karen 20 Comments

ouai pet shampoo
Why yes, fancy fragrant pet shampoo IS a thing.

Note: This cat looks like how I feel when I wake up in the morning. #accurate

Yes, scented pet shampoos are totally a thing. Human hair care company OUAI recently launched a musky floral $28 Pet Shampoo (“a spa day for your pet”) with notes with Italian lemon, Turkish rose, jasmine, iris, lily and white musk.

But ooh-la-la, it gets fancier! It also contains sensational-sounding luxe ingredients like…

  • Apple cider vinegar — For its natural antibacterial properties, and because it helps to balance pH-levels.
  • Aloe leaf juice — Soothes dry, itchy skin.
  • Tamarind seed extract — The natural equivalent of hyaluronic acid, because it promotes hydration while providing a velvety moisture barrier to keep pet hair hydrated.

— OUAI PR

Um…do I really need to tell you that I kinda want to use it on myself?! Ha ha ha!

ouai pet shampoo
MRRROW

I love a floral white musk as much as the next crazy cat lady, but I probably wouldn’t use this on Tabs, EVEN IF he let me give him a bath, which only happens once in a blue moon, because I like his au naturel kitty fur smell, which smells a little like me, a little like El Hub, and a lot like a steamed pork bun (weird, I know…but it’s comforting!). Sometimes it also exhibits notes of Burt’s Bees Baby Lotion.

A girl and her tabby best friend

Hmm… I’m not sure how Tabs would feel about fragrant shampoo; however, I do know how he feels about baths (he’s not a fan). I suspect that he wouldn’t want to put anything on his fur that could potentially overwhelm his million-dollar sense of smell, you know? Because what if he accidentally slipped out of his couture cat collar/harness one morning and had to fend for himself and live off the land, but he couldn’t smell an approaching cat criminal because his kitty nose was overwhelmed by notes of Turkish rose?

I know, I’m freakin’ crazy…

Anyway, how do you feel about fragrant shampoo for pets? Inquiring minds want to know.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. I can’t believe I’m about to say it again already, but TGIF!!!!!! 🙂

MAC Plenty of Pout Plumping Lipstick Swatches and a First Look

July 12th, 2018 by Karen 8 Comments

mac plenty of pout plumping lipstick
New lippies from MAC to plump that pout

Think about the phrase “bee-stung lips” for a second. LIKE, REALLY THINK ABOUT IT. Literally sounds like the worst thing to ever happen to anyone. I was stung by a bee on my bicep when I was eight, and I still remember, with much clarity, the feeling of a million hot needles pinching my skin. To this day whenever a bee enters my peripheral vision I walk a little faster and mutter under my breath, “Bees can smell fear. No fear. No Fear. NO FEAR!”

Well. MAC’s new line of plumping lipsticks (and a plumping gloss) will not inflict any deep mental scars. At least I hope that’s the case?! I’m sitting here wearing the shade Smooth Going and my mouth is pretty tingly. Not a four-alarm status sting but I definitely feel like I’m alive.

Plenty of Pout Plumping Lipstick creates full, bee-stung lips while laying down sheer, creamy colour. An invigorating ginger root complex volumizes lips immediately, while avocadin and other potent oils moisturize and smooth. Plenty of Pout Plumping Lip Gloss packs the same power with a side of clear, balmy shine. Layer it over Plenty of Pout Plumping Lipstick to erase lip lines for a fresh, pumped-up pout!
