Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 769

February 20th, 2023 by Karen 14 Comments

love you chalk drawing
Have a colorful day, my friend.

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007).

1. Duochrome powder shadow or matte cream stick shadow?

The matte cream stick shadow, please. It’s gotta be easy to blend, though. No creasing, either!

2. What blush have you been wearing lately?

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Blush in Corsica.

3. What’s a lipstick you could wear over and over again and never get tired of?

MAC Velvet Teddy!

4. Lava lamp or disco ball?

Um, disco ball, I guess? I’d get a tiny little one and hang it on a plant. LOL!

5. Last party you went to?

I took Connor to a Winnie-the-Pooh themed birthday party at a bowling alley last Saturday. She had fun, especially in the arcade! I kinda did, too. I chatted with a lot of parents and played ski ball, which was my go-to game back in the day.

6. What are you going to do after you fill out the Monday Poll?

A whole lotta nothing. Connor has this week off from school, and today we’re just going to relax. We’re going outside to draw on the sidewalk with chalk, ride bikes and just enjoy the day.

7. Carnations or tulips?

Tulips!

8. Do you remember getting your ears pierced?

Nope, I was a teeny tiny baby.

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 749

February 19th, 2023 by Karen Leave a Comment

There have been some great presidents in the history of our country…including some great cats.

Tabs was the president, founder and chief feline officer of Tabs the Cat Industries, LLC, but more than that — he was also the heart and soul of the company.

A day doesn’t go by that I don’t think of his meows of wisdom. He will forever be remembered as a just and…mostly kind leader (except when he was hangry).

Rosie

Since Rosie took over for Tabs, the company has done pretty well. We’ve added another full-time pet assistant named Connor Claire. She was just an intern when Tabs was in charge, but she’s a full-fledged pet assistant now.

Rosie doesn’t take the day-to-day company business as seriously as Tabs did because she has her sights set on higher office. She even formed a presidential exploratory committee and may run for cat president in 2024.

She spends a lot of time rehearsing her speeches and lots of time practicing public speaking.

And looking regal…

I think she’d make a wonderful politician because she’s tireless. She isn’t one to lounge around.

I know she has big ideas. We need a cat like her to help us tackle the world’s problems. 🙂

Saturday Surfing, February 18, 2023!

February 18th, 2023 by Karen 1 Comment

Hiya, friend! Happy Saturday. Is it just me, or did this week feel unusually long? I think we should all receive a trophy like the one above just for making it to the weekend, LOL!

This week’s reading

  • Derms like to tackle multiple concerns in one fell swoop by combining skin care treatments into one single session.
  • Sometimes I cannot with all the trends. Now “caveman skin” is a thing.
  • Re: trends. I’m guilty of rockin’ chunky highlights in a reddish Cherry Coke shade in the early Aughts.
  • New evidence supports the theory that our scalp hair evolved to help us stay cool.
  • Speaking of hair, ever wonder what causes those pokey chin hairs that seemingly pop out of nowhere?
  • What’s in it for skin care lines sponsoring NYFW runway shows?
  • 3 ways to habit stack for better skin.
  • Look out for the following hair accessories this spring: black leather headbands, plaid fabric headbands, jeweled headbands, oversize bows and Y2K stretch combs (ahh, memories).
  • “Nearly 30 women are suing hair care brand Olaplex for negligence and false advertising, claiming their products contain allergens and irritants that caused them hair loss and dry, brittle hair.”
  • How to keep your hair healthy if you use box dye.

I’m so intrigued!

This looks like fun.

Food for thought.

Meow!

I think it’s time for another cup of coffee. Who’s with me?

What’s a Good Hair Day Like for You?

February 17th, 2023 by Karen 5 Comments

I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately because the strays at the edge of my forehead no longer do my bidding. No matter what products or tools I use, I just can’t coax them into submission.

Part of me is trying to accept this reality of hair sticking out at odd angles ALL THE FREAKING TIME, but part of me is also like, “We live in modern times! This cannot be the reason why I decide to give up completely!” LOL.

Anyway, a good hair day for me means I’m wearing my hair down, and the following is happening:

  • Aforementioned bits and bobs of stray hair are flat and smooth and going in the direction of my choosing.
  • Some lift at the roots! Love me some root lift.
  • No renegade ramen noodle silvers sticking out at odd angles.
  • Having the long layers in the front curled away from my face (thank goodness for curling irons), so I don’t have to spend the day pushing hair out of my eyes.
  • Strands that feel soft and not crunchy. I can’t deal with crispy hair; I suspect it was because I spent my formative years dousing myself with extra hold hairspray and that trauma has stayed with me.

What’s a good hair day like for you?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. TGIF!

Checking In: Gorgeous Clouds, and Several Firsts

February 16th, 2023 by Karen 19 Comments

I saw these beauties the other day in the sky when I picked up Connor from dance class. Don’t you love the colors and the shape? They look like clouds in a painting. Gorgeous!

Well, it’s been a couple days of several firsts on this end.

I found Connor’s first written banana note, for one.

I’ve always liked writing little notes on bananas; it’s just a funny thing I’ve always liked to do.

Now that Connor is learning to read, I’ve been leaving her notes on her bananas at snack time. Today I wrote, “You are kind, important and so loved” on one side and “You are beautiful inside and out” on the other.

Anyway, I went to grab a banana today out of the bunch on the counter, and found a note in her handwriting.

So sweet.

Another first: I went to my very first dog birthday party.

Our friends had a dinner to celebrate their dog Bella’s second birthday, and we were invited over for pasta and dessert.

Bella’s mom made her a birthday cake from scratch that included ground chicken and carrots, among other things. The party was fun and super cute!

Last, but certainly not least, I went to my first official video meeting for – drumroll please – a new writing gig.

Yup, it was for one of the interviews I had in the last month, and I’m super stoked because it’s with a luxury Korean skin care line with a product that saved my skin when it was breaking out terribly, which I’ve purchased and used to the last drop many times.

Amore Pacific Treatment Enzyme Peel
Amore Pacific’s Treatment Enzyme Peel

That same skin care line has another brand in its portfolio with a product that’s been sitting on my nightstand for years!

I really wanted to write for a line that I’ve used and loved, so I’m super excited about what’s on the horizon.

Anywho. Thanks for being here and listening while I’ve looked for a new job. You’re a good friend, and I appreciate you.

Happy Valentine’s Day

February 14th, 2023 by Karen 5 Comments

Have a happy and sweet Valentine’s Day!

Happy Valentine’s Day, my beautiful friend.

I decided to say “I love you” to myself today by sitting down in front of the mirror to joyfully put on makeup! 🙂

Key items in this look

A few notes on the key items

The Do It For The Graham eyeshadow palette is from a new-to-me brand called Beauty Bakerie, and it includes 12 powder shadows in foil, matte and duo-chrome finishes.

I’m wearing the tan, beige and dark reddish brown matte shades on my lids. Even though I’m out of practice with blending, the soft, smooth powders made it easy to weave one color into the next. Very nice!

You might recognize the red lip, because it’s one of my MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour favorites, Quite the Standout, which is a bright orangey red. If you like warm-toned reds, this shade is gonna be your jam! It’s temporarily out of stock on the MAC website (boo), but check your local counter to see if they have it around.

Last but certainly not least, MAC Glow Play Blush in That’s Peachy. It’s a light peach blush that goes on sheer, which I like because then I can really control the color intensity on my cheeks. It pairs especially well with warm red and peachy-pink lip colors.

Valentine’s Day flowers for you, friend!

Sending you so much love. Treat yourself with extra kindness today, OK?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Oh, and let me know if you also did a red lip, too!

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 768

February 13th, 2023 by Karen 19 Comments

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007).

1. If you could fill one of those big, oversized red velvet Valentine’s hearts filled with treats for yourself, what would the treats be? You can pick anything!

Honestly, a combination of See’s milk chocolate and some OPI and Essie nail polishes would be great. LOL! While we’re at it, let’s add a few gift certificates for skin care and a spa visit. Can I stuff a new bag and a cute shoes in there, too?

2. What makes you great? (Don’t you dare hold back on this answer, babe.)

My creativity, charisma and drive. My ability to ask for help when I need it. Side note: this happened for me later in life, and only with lots of self-reflection; I suffered needlessly for years before I figured it out. Anywho. My want and need to become better at things – a better student at life, a better mom, a better person. My ability to empathize with others. My ability to make friends with cats! My intuition; it never fails me.

3. What’s one nice thing you can do for yourself this week that says, “I love ya, sweet girl.”

You know what? I’m going to treat myself to a long walk outside while I listen to some fun music!

I’m also going to find a cute spring outfit that makes my heart sing because I’m tired of wearing clothes that technically get the job done but don’t inspire me in any way. Life is too short to wear gray and tan shirts 24/7.

4. Pick one: red lipgloss or pink lipstick?

This is a very hard choice for me. I’ll do a sheer red gloss from Tower 28. They have a shade called Spicy that looks fun!

5. What color would you rather wear for an outfit of the day: pink or red?

I feel like I can pull off both, but today let’s go with a warm coral pink because it feels like we’re on the edge of spring, and pink would be fitting.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 748

February 12th, 2023 by Karen 4 Comments

Are you ready for some football?? It’s Super Bowl Sunday here! 🏈 As you may recall, Tabs played professional feline football prior to his career as a kitty supermodel.

Yeah, he played tight end for the Mill Valley Wildcats.

He dominated, of course.

He would have played longer had he not suffered a career-ending tail injury in the Super Bowl, but it was all for the best… It was during his rehab from that injury that he decided to purr-sue other interests, and the rest, as they say, is kitty modeling history.

Rosie

Rosie is pretty excited about today’s game. Unfortunately, the Niners didn’t make it this year, but she also likes Eagles, so she’s hoping they win today. 🙂

Oh, and she’s also pretty excited about Valentine’s Day. ❤️

What do you think of her outfit? 😺

Karen
